January 26th, 1950 is a red letter day in India’s history as a nation. Every true blood Indian knows its significance. It is on this day ever since 1950 that we have celebrated our Republic Day. It was on this day that the fathers of our constitution decided that the head of our country will be an elected representative chosen from among the people, by the people. Recognizing this fact, every Republic Day each year is celebrated with patriotic enthusiasm at Vasavi College of Engineering. At the long and short of it Republic Day is a showcase of how strongly we at Vasavi College of Engineering feel for our country.

Tradition holds that Republic Day programs in Vasavi be organized by First Year Students. This year was no different. This year like always was quite a treat with plenty of surprises. The program started off with the tricolor being hoisted by Vasavi’s Principal Professor Dr. Changal Raju followed by the national anthem. The First Years got the ball further rolling by greeting the audience and addressing them in Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Hindi and English. Each pair of students described the strengths of their various states and how they made India stronger and more beautiful. This, in essence, was a commendable effort to showcase our country’s belief in unity in diversity. As time passed by the action shifted from in front of the Vishveshvaraya Block to the shamiana set up in the ground. The principal highlighted the various achievements of the college. These include collaborations with various industry leaders like NVIDIA, United Technologies Ltd., Infosys (Campus Connect Program), and Wipro (Mission 10 X). IBM too has signed an MOU with our college to conduct a 4 year M.S Programme in software engineering for their non engineering employees. The principal highlighted the setting up of Research and Development incubation centers in collaboration with IIIT, Hyderabad. He also spoke about the successful implementation of the Student Development Programme among the 3rd Year and 4th year students. This enabled the students to better equip themselves while appearing for Campus placement and job interviews. Speaking of which, this year Vasavi had 486 placements in prestigious companies ranging from Infosys to Delloite. Along with a high pass percentage of 95%, the college also secured a sizeable chunk of the university’s top ranks.

After his speech, he handed over the mike to the president of Pendekanti Group of Educational Institutions, Mr. Rama Mohan Rao. While commending and recognising these achievements he warned of “tough days” to come due to the looming economic crisis. While emphasizing on hard work he also stressed on the importance of recognising merit in the form of academic performance and regular attendance. In lieu of this cash awards were announced for people with extraordinary academic performance. Prizes of Rs.10000, Rs. 7500 and Rs. 5000 were given to students who stood first, second and third in each section of every branch of engineering of the college. Rs 2500, Rs 1000, and Rs 1000 were awarded to students who had 100%, 99% and 98% attendance respectively. If these awards were not large enough, Rs 10000 and Rs 7500 were also given away to the two best final year projects of each branch. Deserving students were invited along with their proud parents in order to receive their rewards.

The programme ended with a luncheon for the staff, management, students and their parents. In all Rs 15 lakhs as quoted by the president was spent to honour academic excellence and to celebrate our Republic Day. But then what Vasavi truly believes is we can’t put a price on things like our country and our education system.
