CienciaCiencia is a national level technical symposium conducted by CVR college of Engineering. Ciencia,  which broadly means science in Spanish  questioned, challenged students on their mental might in the various facets of technologies, basics, skill, threw up many answers at the end of the two day extravaganza. The purpose and idea of this year’s fest was to innovate and improvise the emerging technologies for the better through knowledge.

Ciencia ’09 began with the inaugural function, two distinguished personalities were invited as the Chief Guest and the Guest of Honour . The Chief Guest being Dr.Murali Padmanabhan, Head, Learning Technologies Solutions Group, Tata Consultancy Services, Hyderabad. He mentored the participants and the students in strengthening their basics and unleashing their potential by being inquisitive. He emphasized more on innovation. Innovate, innovate, innovate and you will be a leader was his message. He also stressed on keeping ourselves abreast at modern technologies like avatars, chatter bots, Haptecs and the likes. His message was loud and clear and the way to proceed was to innovate.

The Guest of Honour Prof P.Subba Reddy, Director, University Computer Centre, Osmania Univesity, Hyderabad offered us a perspective of knowledge. His speech lacked the enthusiasm which was earlier built up by the chief guest .He spoke in a monotone which fluttered many a patient listeners but his address stressed on knowledge and its importance in innovating and creating path breaking technologies.

Well, that was the formal, ceremonious , usual beginning after which the participants made a beeline at the registration desk to register themselves for the plethora of events available. Paper and poster presentations drew 280 participants out of which 100 were shortlisted, the response this year was bland compared to last year which drew 430 participants. The VLSI and Grid Computing workshops had steady inflow of people through both the days.  There were other technical events like Fix n Win, Tweak XP, Electro Whiz for the academically and technically inclined geeks. The event which had the most response was “Treasure Hunt” and the registrations had to be forcefully closed, after which the participants thoroughly enjoyed hunting for the “chest”.

The not so technophiles were spoilt by choice in the robotics event ROBOTIKA which drew a very good crowd in all the five events under it. Good organizing was what the participants had felt and expressed the same. Every bot had an identity of its own, be it shape or mechanism. The highest attendance was however for Robosoccer and Robotrack. Robots tested their might against each other in Robowarz and the winner decimated its opponents in every round winning hands down. The champion of Robosoccer (Les Invincibles) true to its name was invincible, virtually untouched.

They also had a exquisite art gallery with truly amazing  pieces of poetry and paintings. The tattoo artist Rakesh from their very own college was very sublime in his body art dexterity. The best is always saved for the last,  LAN . People who claimed themselves to be hardcore gamers proved that they aren’t into geeky and nerdy stuff, instead they are suave and punk and the cool dudes around. Clans raged wars against each other in Warcraft. Snipers and assassins sprayed bullets in Counter Strike. Rubber was burnt and smoked and nitrous fumes released on the streets of Need for Speed and the Most Wanted kept the RPM at superior levels.

The two day symposium ended with the valedictory function, the gathering was addressed by Govindharajulu,  Head, Embedded Systems Lab , IIIT, Hyderabad. The winners were awarded their certificates and of course the Prize Money. Some of the participants expressed the food being bad on day two and otherwise the events were fun and interesting. The robots vouched that they would come back with renewed vigor and innovative designs and mechanisms to conquer its opponents. It was indeed a pleasure to see happy faces and smiles at the closure of the euphoria.
