Yantra13th and 14th March 2009: “YANTRA” a National Level Student  Paper Contest for the Mechanical Engineering division was a part of TECH PRAGNA – ‘09 held at CM Engineering one of the colleges of  Malla Reddy groups at Dulapally, Secunderabad. The two days fest started of with much elaboration at the main campus of MREC with all the management honchos present including Shri Malla Reddy – Chairman of MRGI, Retd Col G Ram Reddy – Chief Administrative Officer, Prof R Madan Mohan – Director Academics, Dr. MRK Murthy – Principal MREC, Prof M Komaraiah – Chief coordinator and Prof N Y S Murthy – Convener, whew that was just few of them wondering why?

How? Etc the reason being simple , TECHPRAGNA ‘09 hosted thirteen fests under its name each one being looked by a single college and to name a few Aerodyne the fest for Aeronautical Engineers was hosted by MRCET which included technical quiz, problem statement and other events apart from the regular paper presentation. Other fests included Abhivyakti – ENGLISH, Anusandhan – ECE, AOUSHADH- Pharmacy, Jeevan- Bio Tech, Yavanika – CSE & IT, Vidyout- EEE, Teramind- MCA, Innovator- MBA, so on and on and on.

The event started with Dr. M D Christopher, Secretary State Council of higher education as the chief guest of the function, the whole formal speeches and guest lectures was followed by registration process which was a herculean task in itself as registration of all the 13 fests was being done at the main campus, lunch which started at 12:30 finished around 1:30pm after which all the participants where requested to proceed to there respective colleges for  there fest, they boarded the buses provided for them to commute between the campuses which really helped save time and facilitated running the events on time.

Back at CMEC the stage was set to roll in the action for “YANTRA” as the organizing committee of students prepared itself for the event from two days prior, the moment Judges for the Day Dr. L Bhaskar and Prof C H Rajesh stepped in the seminar hall with Principal Dr. Talla Siva Prasad, Administrative Officer Retd Col Sita Rama Rao, Head of Department Aeronautical Engineering Mr. T Prasad, and the host Head of Department of Mechanical Engineering Prof Veeraraju , noises erupted the peaceful  surroundings. The show blared of around 2:00pm half an hour late from the stipulated time, as always the lightning of the lamp by the dignitaries was followed by as prayer song by Srividya from Aeronautical 2nd year and her group, the show was hosted by Gaurav Kaushal from Aeronautical 3rd year.

The first paper to be presented was by T Sushma and E Chandana from Rajiv Gandhi Memorial College of engineering and technology, Nandyal, there topic was “Technology Trends in Mechanical Engineering –NEMS” it was seen that out station  students were given first chance to present the paper on the first day as the event was planned for two days, these small gestures by the organizing staff seem to have gone well with the participants who were quite happy with the arrangements made for them, which included stay in hostels, provision of food and snacks and all, the presentations were going well but the time limit set as 15 min was not seemingly enough for the participating students as most of them still didn’t finish their presentation even after the final bell of conclusion was rung, this seem to have gone till the end.

The favorite time for everyone was apparently the question and answer session which the audience seem to have enjoyed a lot and rather than a question answer session it seemed more like a debate as the students indulged in constant discussion over any topic and didn’t miss any chance to pull each other’s leg. The first session of the presentations ended at 5:00pm on 13th evening and was presented by Satya Prakash and Imran Ali of DVR engineering college and CMEC respectively with there paper title as “IC Engines”, the say ended with a total of 8 papers being completed and announcement were made regarding 14th schedules.

Session two started of early at 9:30am with judges now being seated in two different Seminar Rooms for all the papers to finish in time, in seminar room 1  B.Goverdhan Reddy from SVIST College of Engineering, Madanpalli started the presentations with his topic of choice “Pelamis”, which in particular raised the curiosity level of the judge and the fellow students. Whereas in seminar room 2 the atmosphere was calmer as it witnessed comparatively lesser participants than room 1 it was managed by Student Coordinators Ashok Jhajhria and Ganesh Chowdary &  was anchored by Hemashri of Aeronautical 1st year.

Around 10:30am the Guest lecturer Dr. P Ravinder Reddy Prof. & HOD in Mechanical Engineering Department of Chaitanya Bharati Institute of Technology, presented his slides on aspects of design and production in mechanical engineering, which gave the participants a breather to relax and run there thought process to prepare for there seminars, the presentation by the chief guest concluded with a ceremony honoring the Guest and the judges by a memento given to them by Principal Dr T S Prasad.

This brief formal ceremony was quickly followed by the presentations as time was running out the seminars grew more and more repetitive and even the judge seemed jaded as there were no questions being put up by him to the participants which surely was a relief for many. As the clock neared 12:30 the presentations came to an end with K Mohan and Ch Krishna  from MREC concluded the last presentation with there topic as “Experimental investigation of cotton seed oil and lin seed oil”

The closure of the events at CMEC for YANTRA came to an end after the vote of thanks, though the announcement of results was yet to be done, the lunch which was again at the main block MREC campus was supposedly followed by the Valedictory function where the guest was Mr. Shankar S Mantha the Vie Chairman of A.I.C.T.E. The response of the participants and the wonderful show put by the organizers promises for a much more magnanimous and impressive event in the coming year. This year being the first one to a hold a massive total of 13 fests really makes a niche for itself for being the real Jumbo of all technical fests in city, though little cultural and informal events could have managed to add the missing glamour to the show, but it was undeniably a delight for everyone to be a part of TECHPRAGNA – ‘09.
