Did you know what is unique about the 1987 radio commercial of Allwyn’s trendy range of watches? It was A.R.Rahman’s first ever radio jingle. You would have known this and the answers to many more questions, difficult and interesting, if you were present at the IDEA Brand Equity Quiz 2009, the Hyderabad round on the 19th of April at the Taj Banjara. Having completed the regional rounds at Chennai, Bangalore and Kochi, BEQ arrived at Hyderabad and an unusually pleasant Hyderabad evening, a welcome break from the sizzling summer, set the mood for the quiz that followed.

Originally started eighteen years ago, as a single city event in Bangalore, Brand Equity Quiz has now grown into India’s largest inter-corporate quiz competition with over 350 teams spread all over India participating in it. This year, the format of the quiz includes regional rounds being conducted in ten cities across India with the winners of each city representing their city at the semi finals. The top four teams of the semis will slug it out at the final which is scheduled to be conducted on the 10th of May at Mumbai.

The evening was kicked off by the quiz master Derek O’Brien with his usual wit and charisma. The prelims consisted of 30 questions varying from advertising to management. While the scores were being tallied, the same questions were put to the audience who managed to answer most of them, winning a stack of prizes along the way. With 28 teams participating, the competition was tough and the cut-off high. The six teams that managed to grab a spot in the finals were Vizag Steel [seasoned veterans], Google, JWT Mindset [last year’s winners and the only advertising agency to participate from Hyderabad], Microsoft, T.I.M.E and Satyam.

The finals consisted of five rounds, including an audio visual and a buzzer round. The teams came out with high level performances. With the questions getting tougher as the quiz progressed, the answers kept getting better and the fun never went missing, largely thanks to the quiz master. The final round saw the bottom four teams getting eliminated and the top two teams battling out for the top spot and a chance to represent Hyderabad at the national final. With Vizag Steel leading the quiz for the most part, it only seemed natural that that the quiz would be theirs. But that was not to be, with JWT answering that West End in London was the parallel to Broadway in New York at the last moment. The deal was sealed for Anvar Alikhan and Arif Akbar of JWT Mindset with that. They won in true movie-style with getting the last question right with time running out. The nail-biting end was the perfect end to an electrifying evening of quizzing.

The high turn out of audience gave an energized air to the quiz. “l have been following the Brand Equity Quiz for more than two years now. And when I was told that Derek O’Brien would be here, I knew there wasn’t any other place I’d be at. I am a huge fan of his and it’s a great feeling to be present at one of his quizzes. ” says Sri Harsha, an employee of CA. “We saw the ad in the newspaper and thought we should attend the quiz. It being a Sunday also helped. Our children grew up watching the Bournvita Quiz and we wanted to be here with them watching Derek quiz.” said Mr. Abhirama Krishna of Satyam who had come with his family. A few others had turned up to support friend that were participating in the quiz while most of them were present for the sheer love of quizzing.

This year, the presenting sponsor of the event is IDEA with the grand sponsor being Mahindra Scorpio, which each of the grand finale winners will drive away with. Times Now is the television partner and Kingfisher the airline partner. The national prize sponsors are Vivada Cruises, Samsung Mobile, Lavazza, Citizen Watches, Samsonite, ITZ Cash Card, Back 2 Barter, Antivirus Quick Heal, Identiti, i-Tech, Featherlite and Digjam.

Here’s wishing the JWT Mindset’s team of Anvar Alikhan and Arif Akbar of Hyderabad all the luck for the finals and hope they come back winning the crown of Corporate India’s best quizzers.
