Fresh crack of dawn, whispering trees, cool breeze, blooming flowers, humming cuckoos, perching birds and animals, a small drizzle in the evening, happy dusk. Altogether a perfect day. Dreaming??? Not even ‘Perhaps’, you are absolutely dreaming. Mud houses to skyscrapers, calculator to palmtop, carts to cars, technologically, technically, mechanically, manually, industrially, economically, virtually and scientifically we are upgraded. All man made! Missed something…!? YES – Nature. Environment has degraded. Albeit this much of obliteration, there are still chances of getting back the original beauty of Mother Nature with few new adaptations. Will the people get toned at least now and grow to be eco-friendly?

Small strides towards making people notify the threats being faced by the environment; many events were organized on World Environment Day. ‘Climate change and its humanitarian consequences serving as a Solferino of today’ was the theme for the World Environment Day, given by Red Cross for this year. The Red Cross kick started this year’s toil with a rally. “The WWF theme is different from our theme. This complete rally is conducted under the governance of Sri. A. Laxman Rao garu. Our main plan is to conduct this rally is to get wakefulness in the people towards how much we spoiled our climate and take fewer treads towards fixing them”, says a member of Red Cross. Members of Red Cross, students, representatives of various NGO’s like Association for promoting social action, Devnar foundation for the blind, Aathmeeya Manasika Vikasa Kendram took part in the rally.

The Governor flagged the rally at Raj Bhavan to mark the World Environment Day organized by the society. Governor N.D.Tiwari called upon the AP Red Cross to spread awareness among general crowd, to undertake measures and to prevent the ill effects of global warming, climate change and environment. The Governor advised the people to take precautions and try to have prevention than cure. He also told that he spoke to the Biodiversity chairman of India regarding the biodiversity of the state and also told the people to plant as many plants as possible and decrease the global warming. If you are not able to do something materially then spreading awareness is a best job one can do. Taking the initiative and making people realize is also a big task.

When questioned about the baseline behind the theme, a senior member of Red Cross stated that “Many soldiers were wounded during the Battle of Solferino and there were no one to take care of them. Few people decided to take care of the wounded ones. It was then the concept of formation of Red Cross started and there on we took sturdy and ethical themes every year and are doing all possible activities to stop the degradation levels. Like the people at Battle of Solferino, now we want people to again take a decision to get into a team and start working for betterment of problems”. If the destruction rate decreases many things which are about to get extinct can be saved and few others can also be retained. Slogans were hollered and participants were asked to shout at a higher pitch to make the cause penetrate into the minds of the people on the roads. Minal, a 12th grade student and Red Cross member says that in the first year at my school the Red Cross activities were full fledged later everything fell silent. Many schools might have been called in for the rally and they might have made it a much bigger event.

“I was astonished by an article in a newspaper recently. It states that One search on Google generates approximately 7g of carbon dioxide. It’s a huge carbon footprint. So I think I will stop searching small things on Google and I will bookmark the most frequently used sites”, acknowledged Sanjana. However, we have official information from the Google blog that the amount of CO2 is 0.2 g and not 7 g (Google Official Blog).

The Global Warming is the main dilemma in the present scenario. New ways of grow plants in Green Houses are also started. Instead of using just the floor to plant the saplings they used a spiral platform and planted on them. More plants have to be grown using less place. Delicate and minute things are the main causes of large degradation. Tiny things which we neglect daily set in motion various ways of pollution. Small steps towards saving environment will prove worthy in the due course of time. “One always has to save water. Its only 4% of freshwater left on the earth now and this has to be used effectively by us and has to be saved for the future”, averred Kalyan, participant of the rally.

The main point that most of the participants barbed was most of the people like working for this cause of saving the nature but they want it in a much easier and simpler way. “Who wants to soil ones hands to clean the society? Everyone wants a rain but no one will be interested in planting a tree and watering it daily? It’s ones responsibility to know the degradation costs and outcomes and take the enterprise to endeavour and accomplish eco friendliness. “I don’t think its any day to celebrate and consider a holiday. It’s always important to spread awareness, I personally went door to door and asked people not to throw waste on roads and always use trash cans. And if possible to maintain separate bins for dry and wet wastes. There is an NGO, Wealth out of Waste (WOW) mainly working for this cause. They gave separate bins and asked people to put the plastic wastes in it. And they are going to get back and buy this waste”, stated Shanti, a student.

The participants were endowed with refreshments before the rally and were provided with water throughout the rally. The rally concluded at Necklace Road. Similar events like bicycling, planting trees, awareness discussions, rallies were conducted in the Hyderabad on the eve of World Environment Day. The bad part of the rally was that water packets that were given to the participants of the rally were thrown away on the roads. Just being part of some rally and yelling slogans is not enough, one always has to emphasize on what they are doing and stick to it. Minor hitches also affect nature in a superior way. ”An on looker opined that it’s good to see these many young and elderly people taking part in the rally to drive in the point of environment friendliness. Mostly I will try to plant a sapling and water it daily”.
