Garbage collection has turned out to be a menace in the city now. An open place, which happens to be a land owned by a common man has turned out to be a plot for dumping detritus. Miyapur, an area famous for its upcoming skyscrapers is also the prime target of GHMC to discard the household crap of the neighboring sphere.

“The garbage collection has become a major cause of worry for us as the untimely removal of it from the place is causing dreadful diseases”, says Nagamani, a resident of the same domain. She also adds saying that, the change in the climate in the last one week has worsened the picture and has left many kids in the locality suffering from malaria. She says they hesitate to keep their doors open as her 6 months grand daughter may fall ill.

Venu, who is 29 years old, working in a Pharmaceutical Company, complains, “The foul odor from the junk is unbearable all through the day and they have many a times complained to the Commissioner of the city but there hasn’t been any action taken”. He also adds that the weekly market in this area is also just next to the garbage dump, which even affects the hygiene of the vegetables and the cut meat.

Vikas, a student of VNR VJIET, who stays close to this territory says, “During the rainy season it’s horrible to just travel through this road and being just next to the National Highway is a major issue of regard that has to be delved into”. He also points out the exponential increase in the number of mosquitoes and other insects in the vicinity due to the garbage dumped in this area. Even the number of dogs has increased up to a hundred and causing nuisance.

On quizzing the GHMC worker as to why this plot has been used to dump garbage he says, “We have been asked to dump it in this place and we have no other go than obeying our Head in doing this for our living”.

Anusha, a student of GRIET, who travels this way to her college says, “I have noticed that it is just once in 3 days that a garbage collector truck arrives to remove the collected garbage from this area. It is miserable to tolerate the stench for few seconds; I just don’t imagine the degree of torment people here are facing. I have seen this place cleaned only one day and that was when there was an election party rally!”

Aparna, who also happens to be a student of GRIET says, “Although there is garbage dumped here, it has considerably reduced taking into account the garbage in the previous 2 years and they have even stopped burning plastics which earlier was polluting the air. In fact the garbage could be taken to a deserted place which is 3 km from the main road and dumped there which will solve the enigma of the residents in this area”.

The city limits continually expanding; the garbage disposal has become a problem both to the authorities as well as the upcoming residential areas.
