Students, who are done with EAMCET and now getting ready to face the counseling and interested in Computer Sciences, here’s a small insight about Computer Science Engineering in Sri Devi Women’s Engineering College.

Sri Devi Women’s Engg College (SWEC) was established in the academic year 2001 – ‘02 with the permission of the AICTE, New Delhi and Government of AP. It is affiliated to the JNTU Hyderabad. Primarily, Computer Sciences is the study of computer systems that includes the architecture of computer, development of computer software, information processing, computer application, algorithmic problem solving and the mathematical foundations of the discipline. Students scoring an EAMCET rank in the range of 8,000 to about 18,000 can acquire a seat in this department in the open category.

The department of CSE is headed by Mr. Ravi Kumar and the department has about 15 faculty members, who deal with the core subjects of computer sciences. There are 120 seats in this branch and the students are divided into two sections of 60 each. When asked about the reasons for opting the college, most of the students said that it was the reputation and record it holds that made them choose it and a few say it’s the wide range of transportation available that influenced their decision. “I chose this college mainly because it’s a girl’s college and my parents thought that it would be a more secure place of study”, says Saritha a 3rd year student, highlighting the fact that it being a girl’s college is also one of the reasons, why students have chosen SWEC.

The infrastructure of the department includes 5 computer labs with about 60 systems with P-III processors in each lab on paper. In reality though, the story has a twist. “About 10-15 computers in every lab don’t really work and finally we end up sharing systems with our mates”, says a Computer Science student when questioned about the labs. When asked to give one faculty member’s name, who they think is the best of all, all the students unanimously named Ms. Krishna Veni as the best. “Krishna Veni ma’am made me fall in love with Java”, says Gayathri a 3rd student from CSE department. The department has a blend of experienced and new lecturers as the faculty. The common belief is that most of the faculty is very cooperative and helpful not only in their respective subjects but also in submitting projects and presenting papers. But there are a few who differ in their opinion. “It’s a waste of time approaching a few lecturers, they never clear any of my doubts.”complains a student from the department. “I think communication skills are very important for the lecturers and the lack of it is hampering some of them in getting their point across to the students”, opines Soujanya.

The head of the department is very well known for his ‘sternness’. Many of the students term the ’so called sternness’ as his stupidity! Students are given regular assignments in every subject as per the instructions from the HOD, who is very popular for his ‘fabulous English’ among the students. Most of the students say that they find it difficult to understand what he really wants to mean at times. “The department is fine but there is very less freedom and flexibility for the students in this department. Coming to college becomes kinda boring and straining some times”, said a group of students when asked about the department. “The worst part of the department is that we hardly get any library hours and sports hours. They are mostly engaged with some or the other lecturer and it is very irritating”, complain another group of students.

The career prospects of this field are enormous with students having the  opportunities of working as software engineers, system engineers, network administrators and software analysts. The previous statistics of campus placements at SWEC are very impressive. Many of the students have gotten recruited into companies like Wipro, Satyam and IBM. Recruitment Programs are also conducted in the campus (IBM recently visited the college on 10th of July).

On the whole, the Computer Science Department in SWEC can be summarized as a department that has moderate infrastructure, fairly equipped labs, good academics but less room for students’ freedom.
