The Central Institute of English language (CIE) was established in the year 1958 in Hyderabad. Later in 1972 the institute opened gates for other foreign languages as well. It was then that CIE was renamed as Central Institute of English and Foreign Languages (CIEFL). It turned into a deemed university in 1973. It was again re-christened as English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU).

EFLU boasts of a sprawling campus housing approximately 25 buildings on 32 acres of land. The campus has well spread green cover too. EFLU provides hostel facilities for its students and faculty. Various cultural and social activities are conducted on a regular basis. Living in EFL University is a truly multicultural experience. With students coming not only from India but also abroad, one is exposed to different cultures, languages and nationalities. At AFLU, one can exercise one’s creative side by singing, dancing and acting in the theatre club, or one can choose to express oneself by writing for the students’ magazine. Watching sports and being a part of it is a good pastime too.

The EFL University, being the only central university in the field of English and Foreign Languages in the country, it has been carrying out proficiency courses in English language for international and Indian learners. EFLU has 11 schools with 38 departments for foreign languages, literature, language sciences, literary, cultural, and philosophical and media studies. Ramesh Mohan Library, Publications Unit, and Educational Multi-media Research Centre (EM2RC) as its Resource Centers. It offers both on campus and distance education.

Following are the courses offered at EFLU:

  • Five-year integrated M.A. (in English, Media, Journalism & Mass Communication, French, German, Russian, Spanish, and Arabic)
  • M.A. programme (in English literature, Linguistics, Mass Communication, French, Arabic, Russian, Film and Cultural Studies)
  • E-master programmes (in French, German, and Russian) are offered on on-line mode
  • Other courses include one-year B.Ed., advanced diploma in Russian and post graduation diploma, post graduation diploma and certificate programmes

For graduates, it provides short-term courses in almost all languages, which are very helpful to them. It offers a platform for rural students as well. Students are also sent for a semester, to study abroad at the campus of the other universities. The short term courses range from one month to three months depending upon the course chosen.  These courses include special English, German and Arabic languages. The faculty coming to these courses is highly qualified and experienced. Not only do they share their knowledge but also offer assistance to their students. The quality education provided by these institutions is renowned and sort after. The institution lays emphasis on two way interaction between the student and the faculty.

About 80% students are exempted from fee and all the students get some kind of financial aid. It doesn’t collect fees from SCs, STs, and differently-abled students. It collects nominal fees from others. Those pursuing B.Ed. programme are given a monthly stipend of Rs. 1000 and another Rs. 1000 per year as book allowance. Apart from this, students from weak financial background will also get monetary support on request.

A student from EFLU is recognized and respected. The certificate from EFLU takes people one step ahead of others during job interviews. EFLU offers courses that help in attending interviews confidently and successfully. Scholars, who have studied here can be found in high academic positions or other influential positions in India and abroad. M.A. students too can be found pursuing their studies at other excellent institutions in India or abroad.
