It Happens Here :>

“It is going to be a big day tomorrow”, said Pranay Rupani, a lecturer of Villa Marie College. And a big day it was. The Ceremony for Academic Excellence held by Villa Marie Degree College for its batch of 2006-2009 was quite the event. Dr. S.K.Rao , Director General, Administrative Staff College of India was the Guest of Honour and film directors, Sekhar Kammula and Teja, the chief guests.

The ceremony was held with stupendous tempo and excitement. The heart of it being the three hundred girls dressed in black robes and hats, waiting to hold that degree in their hands which they worked so hard to get. “ We bunked college with friends and ended up getting no attendance. Though we got admonished afterwards I realize now that it was for our own good. To make us better people”, said Anjali Saanghi, student representative from B.Com. She adds, “All these three years we considered ourselves to be very different from each other but right now from where I see we all look the same – girls ready to walk through a new phase of life”.

“It is here that we learned how to work hard and be competitive and for that we will always be thankful to Villa Marie”, said Sumalatha, a B.Sc student.

“As a youngster I was extremely undecided about what to do in my life. When I applied to a foreign university I had to write a paper on why I wanted to pursue the course that I chose. And I wrote things like – ‘I want my country to be proud of me and I want to help develop it’”, said Sekhar Kammula during his speech. “But the concepts that my movies are based on are more or less what I went through in life. The desperation to go abroad became ‘Dollar Dreams’ my first movie and the confusion of my college years became ‘Happy Days’”. He says, “I know I am supposed to talk about media but somehow I can’t help talking about this”.

When the degree certificates were given to the girls the most amazing thing was that, toppers or not, many of them had managed to secure more than 90% and one girl, who had done her intermediate and graduation from Villa Marie got 100% attendance for the span of 5 years. That is so God damn unbelievable!

The students with a variety of views poured their hearts out in an exclusive chat with Vidyouth. “As a young, class 10 student though I scored well I never liked to study. But now I am going to start a whole new chapter of my life. I am proud of the fact that I am finally holding my degree in my hands but now I also realize that there is so much more to achieve in life”, says Anjali Saanghi. “But I really am going to miss my college, my juniors and more than everything else my friends”, she adds in a tone of sadness.

“ I am so relieved to have finally got my degree”, says Amreen. “I always bunked class and sat in the canteen. Never did I pay any attention to any of my lessons. All of a sudden life does not seem colourful. I feel as if I am burdened with responsibility. Well I guess that’s an indication to the fact that the carefree days I enjoyed are now over.”

After all the girls were given their degree, everyone stood up in respect to sing the college anthem of Villa Marie College and then the national anthem.

As the students, faculty and guests filed out of the college auditorium, they were welcomed by the mouthwatering smell of the lunch that was awaiting them. Panner Manchuria, Roti , Paneer Butter Masala, Aloo Kurma, Kashmiri Palauv and what not!

The guests, students and faculty had a cheerful smile one their faces at the end of the function. All in all the Ceremony for Academic Excellence held by Villa Marie College was a huge success.
