Ramakrishna Math, Hyderabad, is a branch of ‘Ramakrishna Mission’, with its headquarters at Belur in Karnataka and Howrah in West Bengal. Ramakrishna Math was first established at Belur by Swami Vivekananda after the death of his guru ‘Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa’. The Hyderabad branch was started in 1974. It is situated on the southern side of Ramakrishna Math Marg in Domalguda, behind Tank Bund. A peaceful atmosphere prevails within the math premises. Its various departments include Ramakrishna Universal temple, VIOL (Vivekananda Institute Of Languages), Vivekananda Institute Of Human Excellence, Vivekananda Health Centre, Vivekananda Library, Gita Darshan (an audio-visual museum on the Gita), Art Gallery, Telugu Publication Department, Book Stall and Sharada Vanam.
VIOL (Vivekanada Institute Of Languages), a Department of R.K.Math (Ramakrishna Math), Hyderabad was started in 1981. The Math regards teaching of languages as an integral part of its work for national and international integration. It considers the study and promotion of languages as one of the ways of entering the thoughts and culture of various societies and nations, for preparing the students for greater interaction with other nations in the field of trade, commerce, education, religion etc. Every candidate, who enters VIOL learns to view his/her life and work from this standpoint and will be in a position to make a real and practical contribution to the nation and humanity. Besides these, each student is exposed to the great culture and heritage of India as is reflected in the teachings of Swami Vivekananda.
At present, the institute offers courses in the following eight languages: Spoken English, French, German, Spanish, Japanese, Chinese, Hindi and Sanskrit. About 21,000 students take admission every year. However, the demand for the Spoken English course in each session has increased. The institution has a team of about 65 highly qualified, experienced, dedicated and dynamic teachers for whom teaching is more of a ‘Passion and a Mission’ than merely a commercial profession. With about 25 years of experience and service, the institution had established itself as a Premier Institution in the field of teaching languages. The students, who are studying at VIOL feel very fortunate to get admission and one of the student, who is persuing Spoken English language said, “I feel very fortunate to get admission at VIOL for Spoken English as this was the third time I came for admission. Every time my admission was rejected due to the lack of seats”.
Concerned with the gradual erosion of moral and spiritual values, R.K.Math felt the urgent need for starting an institution to impart the age-old cherished ideals and values. It aimed at providing what the great patriot and monk, Swami Vivekanada believed- “Life-building, Man-making, Character-making and Nation-building“. Vivekananda Institute Of Human Excellence was established on 10th September,2000. The chief aim of the institution is to instill faith in oneself and impart nobler values of life and life giving strength to raise individual to higher levels of strength and felicity with spiritual, moral, ethical and eternal values of Personality Development and Human Excellence.
Various programmes are intended for the aspirants, who come from different sections of the society, mainly for the youth and students. It was established with the main motto of inspiring the youth and hence there are various courses for the youth. Therefore the courses offered by Vivekananda Institute Of Human Excellence are: Communication Skills, Personality Development Course, Mind Management Course, Yogasanas, How to Influence People, Power Of Positive Thinking, Confidence Building Course and Meditation. Apart from these courses, the institute also teaches Tabla for students. One might think that R.K.Math is only for old people but in reality it was established for the Youth. All the courses above mentioned are for the overall development of an individual as Swami Vivekananda always said, “Youth! Arise, Awake and Stop not till the goal is reached“.
To the left of the VIOL, there is Sharada Vanam, where one can find inspiring quotations by Swami Vivekananda all around the vanam. The likes of: “Strength is Felicity, Weakness is Death“, “You are the creator of your own Destiny” and many more. To the left of Sharada vanam one can see the universal temple wherein, there is a beautiful statue of Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa. Every evening at 7.00pm Bhajans, takes place in the temple. There are many visitors to Ramakrishna Math daily for Bhajans of which one person had said, “I feel very happy and peaceful when I visit this place because of its calm atmosphere”. There is an audio-visual museum named Gita Darshan wherein, there are headphones in which the Bhagavath Gita is played. Every month a magazine is published by the telugu publication department named ‘Ramakrishna Prabha’.
To the right of VIOL there is Vivekananda Health Center, which has been offering its services from the past 5 years. The most unbelievable aspect is that the consultation fee it is only one rupee, irrespective of the class. The Health center aims at providing medical services to the poor at the time of natural calamities. Apart from these, it performs certain activities like feeding the poor daily, providing breakfast for the poor children and free tuition for the school children.
Ramakrishna Math, on the whole, provides services like Education, Medical and some inspirational preachings there by inspiring the students, especially the youth. The courses above mentioned at human excellence building are for the youth as, the present day youth are leading theirs lives in wrong directions rather than putting themselves in proper way . The R.K.Math shows a broader angle for the youth in developing their careers. Apart from these, the institution offers various camps at various places enlightening the youth spreading the idea of Swami Vivekananda as he always said, “Youth! All power is within you; You can do anything and everything“. Hence the Math always organizes camps all over the country inspiring the people and spreading the message of ‘Swami Vivekananda’.
