service to mankind 01

Today, we all live in a materialistic bubble, leading mundane lives solely oriented towards making careers, climbing the commercial ladder and achieving ‘success’ in clear-cut societal terms. However, in this race to the finish first, we tend to neglect the most important things in life. We believe that today, if our generation is lacking in any department it’s that of love, care and concern for humanity but the students at St. Mary’s college proves this notion wrong.

Every year the students of St. Mary’s College, Yousufguda, take up one day in a year as ‘community service’ day and this tradition is being followed since many years. This year too, the students participated in the ‘community service’ program on Saturday, 1st August. As part of the service, all the various departments of the college visited various orphanages and other places in and around the city.

The Department of Commerce visited the Don Bosco Navketan orphanage at Ramanthapur, the Department of Sciences visited the Devnar School For Blind at Bebumpet and the Department of Arts visited an organization called Freedom Foundation at Bolarum, which takes care of HIV positive children and adults. The students volunteer to do these community services apart from the various other academic and co-circular activities that are done at college. The students at St. Mary’s believe that there is no amount of money in this world that can buy these people the sense of belongings, the joy of love or the simple yet heartwarming feeling of being cared for by another individual and they deeply believe that ‘Service to mankind is service to God’ and are ever ready to do such services with much enthusiasm and willingness.

Nearly 500 students volunteered this year to take part in the community service and the students did not do it just for the sake of it but also put their mind and spirit while doing such activities. All the students had got together and collected some funds and donations from their class mates and used those funds to buy few useful things for the orphan children. They sometimes also donate cash to them. They also prepared lunch and took it along with them and sat together and had a fellowship meal with one another. They conducted some games and had returned to college in the evening.

Each student had willingly contributed towards the social cause and sometimes also contributed in cash or in kind. The college also appreciates their students by giving them a ‘certificate of appreciation’ for their service towards the needy and the main idea behind this service is to give a little bit of their lives to those less fortunate people and create a special bond in their lives.
