Biotechnology being an upcoming field in India, the course is chosen by most students, who aspire to get into the research and the teaching field alike. The diverse avenues that can be explored in the subject make it a favourite. “I chose biotechnology ‘coz according to me this is almost equivalent to the medical profession”, responds Shruta Keerthi when asked why she chose biotechnology as a subject. The biotechnology faculty is well-experienced and nurtures the biotech spirit amongst the students. The biotech laboratory is well – equipped and is sufficient for under graduate students to carry out their routine lab work. Presently, Ms. Rajita and Ms.Celestine are lecturers in the department of Biotechnology. “We have some new lecturers, who are good but we’ll take some time to adjust to them but we really miss our old lecturer, Ms.Pooja. Subject wise and also a person she was great”, adds Shruta Keerthi.

The other popular combination of Biochemistry also is great faculty wise. Apart from the regular black board the lecturers also use other various instruction devices are used like power point presentations, OHP. Occasionally seminars and guest lectures are also organized for the students, which are informative, interesting and give exposure to the students.

“The internship cum project, which is a part of our curriculum was one of the best experiences in my life. Even thought it was just for a fortnight, working in well-known pharma company with great scientists and research associates was something I couldn’t even dream about”, shares Meera (name changed), a final year student, who did her project cum internship in Dr.Reddy’s labs.

The HOD, Sr. Sandra Horta and Dr.Mala are the best professors of biochemistry department and are known for their great communication skills, thought provoking lectures and for being able to make the subject interesting for the students. Students of the biochemistry and computer applications combination have an edge over others because they can either opt for their masters in computers or in life sciences.

Chemistry being a common subject for all life science students, the comparative strength of faculty is more. Dr. Rita Kakkar, HOD, who is also the dean of the sciences, heads the department. Every lecturer handles a different division of chemistry for various years are well-experienced. But students have their set of favorites. Soumya, a final year student says, “Our chemistry teachers are great this year but we miss Shikha Mam, who taught us for last two years. Her way of teaching, crisp and apt explanations and her attitude made all the difference to her lectures. Not a single concept went over our heads”.

After the life science combination comes the mathematics courses. Totally four combination include Mathematics as a subject. The statistics combination is the most popular one because of its promising future. Software analysts, Management Information Service (MIS) reporting in organizations, post graduation in statistics, the options are many. “I would suggest the ones interesting in choosing mathematics combination to opt for statistics because it has an edge over the other courses”, says Jiby, a final year student. The faculty of Maths is headed by Mrs. C. Sandhyalakshmi, who is also considered one of the best in the department. Mrs.Rekha, another lecturer of the department is the students’ favourite.

Each department has its own crests and troughs but the facilities provided in terms of infrastructure, exposure and innovative teaching methods makes for a congenial atmosphere to study and a degree from St.Francis College would encompass both subject knowledge and the confidence to step into the outside world.
