Photography – a bread earner, a full time profession and a life for many; but an art, a skill, a hobby and a passion for millions. This line was specially justified at the recently held ‘Foto Video Expo 2009′ at Millennium Gardens, Secunderabad Club Road. It was held between the 20th and 22nd August, 2009 on the occasion of the, World Photography Day celebrated on the 19th of August, 2009. The organizers and the prime sponsors of the event were Rainbow Visions Pvt Ltd. The event was also supported by the Photographic Association of India, Akila Karnataka Video and Photographers’ Association, Bangalore and the South Indian Photographic Allied Trades Association, Chennai. The entry fee was a nominal Rs. 20 per head.

Be it an official reception, a society party, a wedding ceremony, a family outing, a birthday bash or even a casual mass bunk with friends, any event or programme is definitely incomplete without a camera and an overzealous cameraman! A large percentage of the brimming crowd at the expo was of enthusiastic youngsters, who just wanted to keep themselves abreast of all the latest techniques involved in digital mixing, graphics and editing of photos and videos.

Raj Yadav, the organizer for the entire event beams while saying, “A total of 55 companies from all over India had come to put up their stalls here and a rough estimate of about 10,000 people visited the expo every day, on all the three days. This is the first time we have come up with such a concept, which proves to be a source of encouragement for some of the novices here!”

Amongst the most visited stalls were those of the Colo Photo Shop, a company run by Mr. Vishal Karani at Bombay and having around 35 wholesale and retail outlets all over the country. Their specialties are a range of 125 fancy products including radium mugs, photo frames, T shirts (a size of 18 – 44 inches), pillow covers, files, compact mirrors, jewelery boxes and a host of 35 other crystal showpieces like paper weights, magical mugs etc. -  all on which one’s picture could be inscribed! Mr. Srinivas, a creative designer asserts, “We are known for developing images and print photography. We also sell the Sublimation 6 -in – 1 machine, which is a crystal printing machine, which costs a sum of Rs. 45,000 to Rs. 60,000 to dealers as well as to the common man.

However, they are the magic mugs that draw huge crowds especially from the youth here! “I was awestruck by the concept of having one’s picture on one’s own briefcase! Imagine your boss notices that! Totally impressed with this creativity, I gifted my girl a heart shaped pillow bearing our picture and now, she refuses to part with me!” gushes Satish, a Mechanical Engineering student.

Other companies, which set up their stalls include Monarch – Solutions Simplified, Multi Hardware Solutions and SMS Computers, which provide photo papers (A4 and A5 sizes) and produce a great deal of Video Mixing products and have both online and offline, software and hardware for it. Vijay, a Marketing Officer from Multi Hardware Solutions chips in, “We undertake broadcasting and editing for serials and news channels, which come under the category of Virtual Media Systems and manufacture a variety of Video Mixing Products. Our warehouses are located at Haridwar, Pune and Delhi and we cater to nearly 10,000 dealers across the country”. Shridhar, a Bangalore – Chennai based Business Development Officer with Monarch Solutions opines, “This is the first time we are putting up a stall at an expo at Hyderabad and I feel there is still lot of catching up to do here. The youth isn’t as crazy about the camera here, as it in Bangalore or Chennai or worse, even in Vizag and Guntur! This is the main reason we have a special TCC – Twister Certificate Course for students here, which would turn them into professional photo and videographers. We also encourage budding photographers to build this profession by recruiting freshers during their campus placements!”

Apart from these companies, there was Arrow, which designed various kinds of visiting cards, wedding cards, ID cards, credit cards and ATM cards and undertook flex printing using digital features such as Coral Draw and Illustrator; Anand, a company that exclusively manufactures camera lens cleaning leather called ‘Chanmois Leather’; and Pro Comp Studio Systems, which manufacture studio lighting equipment. The company has a dealership of about 250, all over India and they are the prime manufacturers of equipment for fashion and wildlife photographers in India. Some local companies like Smile Digital Signs, which offer a plethora of multicolor offset printers, large format digital signs and imaging solutions also showcased their production. A non – traceable, instant ID Card printer costs nothing less than Rs. 60,000 to Rs. 3,50,000 here! Raghunath, the proprietor of Shadows Digital Creative CDs, which is based in Trisshur, Kerala, exults, “We have been developing the digital and graphic designing of only backgrounds since the past 30 years and this is the first time we have exhibited our stall at Hyderabad so we are looking forward to loads of encouragement”.

Mr. Kaushik, a graphic and creative designer and photographer from R. K. Studio, at A. S. Rao Nagar, Hyderabad informs, “After the digital cameras have taken us by storm, there are both pro and cons accompanied by it. The disadvantages being, that there is a lot of competition for amateur photographers since it has become a child’s play these days but an added advantage is that the picture clarity, alignment and the mode of photography are not compromised”. Putting all the technical aspects of photography aside, it is undoubtedly one extremely interesting and creative hobby and this expo had definitely fueled the desire in some youngsters on the look out for greener pastures and awesome career options!

Hyderabad has to start appreciating a lot more other than just studies. I hope such events give it as many starts as it needs! Many amateur photographers feel they should have a good camera to start good photography – of course, there’s little doubt in that. But, amateurs must be shown how to use the probably antiquated cameras that they possess to the best possible. This will churn more interest than when they’re shown photos taken by EOS-1D’s!
