Like all our childhood ambitions to become a doctor, pilot or journalist, one always wishes atleast once to become a Scientist; but how many succeed in their dreams? Very few, right. Very few have the chance of talking to the scientists of nation, who play a pivotal role in building a stronger Nation. It was a dream come true for many of the CMEC students; to witness scientists from DRDO – Defence Research and Development Organization, and DRDL – Defence Research and Development Labs; to have come among them and to conduct technical workshops on topics like: Composites materials and Thermal Analysis of Solid Rockets. As a part of the Seminar Week held at CMEC from 17th to 22nd August, the Department of Aeronautical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering, together organized a One Day Workshop. The guest lecturers, who conducted the workshops were experienced Scientists from DRDO and DRDL. The program began at 1030hours when Mr. B Shankar Rao, Ex-Scientist DRDL arrived, the Principal Mr. Talla Siva Prasad, Administrative Officer Col. Sita Rama Rao, Head of Mechanical and Aeronautical Department: Mr. Veeraraju, In charge Aeronautics: Mr. T Prasad were among the other dignitaries present on the dais.

After Lighting of the Lamp and a prayer song, without wasting much time the function commenced with quick speeches by the dignitaries. As the speeches were concluded, students were served with snacks in the seminar hall and the guests were taken to an adjacent room. Around 1100hours Mr. Shankar Rao, who had vast experience on design, development, testing and production of Polymeric Thermoset and Composite Materials, started his workshop.

The audience mainly comprised of 2nd and 3rd year students of both Aeronautics and Mechanics stream and shockingly only 4 to 5 students from the 4th year of aeronautics. When one of the final year student was asked why the turnout was so low, we got a quick reply stating it was raining heavily in the morning and mainly because such seminars don’t carry regular attendance and hence students managed to skip a day and take rest at home enjoying the weather. Mr. Shankar Rao’s workshop was very informative and interactive.

The workshops first half was completed at 1230hours. When the question – answers session took place, only one student from final year had a query to ask, as rest all were more than happy to say anything. After the one and a half hour of seminar and the Samosa and Tea they had as snacks had left them drowsy. Memento was presented to the guest by the Principal and students were adjourned for a break till 1330hours. After that another seminar was to be conducted.

The second guest lecturer was by Mr. M Rathnam, a Scientist, currently working with ASL – Advanced System Laboratory, a sub division of DRDO. He has 11 years of experience in Design and Development of Solid Propulsion Systems for various missile programmes and was awarded the Laboratory Scientist of the year – 2007. He was even presented an Award for his papers, during the Golden Jubilee Celebrations of DRDO – 2008. Traffic in city troubled and bored the students in the seminar hall of CMEC as the guest arrived a complete one hour late i.e. 1430hours and without any delay he was quickly introduced by Gaurav Kaushal, the anchor at the function and final year student from Aeronautics himself, as Mr. M Rathnam made his way to the stage. The applause had died down very soon as compared to the morning session as students had reduced in numbers and those, who were present were also there for a reason, as Faculty member Mrs. Radhika and Mrs. Srujana had threatened the students to impose a fine of Rs 500/- or absence of a week, for all the students, who had not attended the workshop.

The topic presented by Mr. M Rathnam, i.e. Thermal Analysis of Solid Rockets was part of the subject curriculum of 4th year semester 1 of Aeronautics students and as there were very few final year students the audience mostly fell asleep during this seminar. During the question and answer session, there were a lot of questions put forward by students of 4th year and faculty member, Mrs. Sirisha, who teaches “Rockets and Missiles” subjects to the students. As Imran, a students of 4th year says, “Both seminars were really interesting, informative and helped them understand the application of the knowledge they are gaining at college”. But not all agreed with him as Prassana, another final year student commented, “There was nothing new spoken by the guest lecturers, apart from the slides and videos, they mostly spoke of the work environment at DRDO and DRDL”. The reaction after any event is always a mixed one, the program was finally concluded after the Principal gave away the memento to the guest and HOD Mr. Veeraraju concluded the event with the vote of thanks and a promise for more such seminars, workshops and other technical activities, wonder what those students have to say, who slept off during this one; zzz!
