In a college like the National Institute Of Fashion Technology (NIFT), where time is the essence, there are a lot of places that one can go to spend their much limited breaks and one does not need any mode of transportation to get there but their very own feet.

The most visited spots by the NIFTians are in and around the college, where the students chill out and cool the tension off. These hot spots include the canteen, the center circle and many more places. These places are very territorial and one has to earn a certain level to bag the right to ‘latkofy’(hang out) here. The canteen is quite an unusual place to be in, one will find a lot of students there but none of them are really present for the food. The canteen is the holy birthplace of ragging, strikes and also a lot of love stories. “During the beginning of college, we are warned not to go to the canteen under any condition. The seniors line up and wait for the juniors here like predators, it’s a scary place to be in the first week!” says Anjali. The color scheme and graffiti on the walls of the canteen are paid more attention to than the food itself.

As one walks outside the canteen and heads to the classrooms, one will come across the center circle. This place, as the name suggests, is circular in shape and is also highly populated during the breaks. One must watch out as they cross this area as most of the fashion judgments are passed here. The stairs are close to the ground and give you a full view of the person walking in the front. “We like to sit here to watch people; you can keep a lookout for fashion inspirations and also for the next fashion disaster”, says Dheema. Also due to the depth in this area, it transforms into an excellent pool during the rains.

Once one passes the center circle the foyer area comes to view, the entire college is built around this square piece of tiled land. Here is where the students pop up during power cuts and also where they seat themselves while they eat. The foyer area has a fountain which doesn’t really work that well, but suffices normal NIFT standards. Right next to the foyer area is a Café Coffee Day stall, which can quite rightly be called ‘the savior’. Even though the canteen does not provide the required meals, students find solace in the fact that one can always grab a cold coffee or a sandwich from here. “The students kept asking for stalls to be put up, which provided pastries and puffs, so we went out and sought Coffee Day and they were glad to help us out”, say the faculty. This coffee stall has the highest fan rating among the hot spots.

Passing Coffee Day, once the student enters into the many layers and floors of the college, they will hear the rhythmic sound of table tennis. This highly aerated section is what the students like to call the “Hava Mahal”. The Hava Mahal is a vast balcony section on the second floor of the labyrinth, where the students can be found playing table tennis or just chatting away with their legs dangling from the railings. This place is highly windy and many a time the ball falls to the ground floor and someone has to go all the way down to get it. They still don’t change the position of the table, it’s a tradition in its own way! These are just a few of the many places a NIFTian can go to relax which isn’t for long as the minutes of joy come to a close, the students rush to their next class and wait till they can get out and reunite with these places of respite.
