Which course to take up? Which college to choose? – these are some common questions that arise in the minds of students, immediately after finishing their 12th/ Intermediate course. Students, who take up professional courses wait for their counseling, while those applying for a non-professional ones have to search for a college of their liking. One such college is Wesley Degree College for Women, situated at 5 Lancer road, Secunderabad. The courses offered by the college are B.Sc and B.Com.

B.Sc (Bachelor of Science)

There are 7 courses offered under this degree:

1. MPC – Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry
2. MSCs – Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science
3. MPCs – Mathematics, Physics and Computer Science

The Head of Department is Mrs. Mini, who is the lecturer of Chemistry as well. The faculty members of the science courses are quite good, but the pass percentage of the students has been considerably not so good. The lecturers are very strict and give a lot of work to the students. There are Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Computer and Clinical Nutrition laboratories for the students, all of which are in a pathetic shape and are not well equipped. Seats for all the courses in B.Sc are limited to 62. The worst part is that, the fee for the science students is very high, but the facilities provided are not satisfactory.

B.Com (Bachelor of Commerce)

Only two courses of Bachelor of Commerce are offered by Wesley Degree College for Women, B.Com (Computers) and B.Com (Regulars). Unlike in many colleges, there is no option of ‘Honors’ but the management is giving it a thought to introduce the same in the near days to come.

The college has had a record of producing an average pass percentage of 92% every year in the B.Com courses. The faculty of the course, according to the students, is one of the best amongst the colleges in twin cities. Led by Mrs. Ratna Jyothi (Head of Department), the lecturers are very friendly with the students, but are very particular when it comes to studies. The members of faculty for commerce are as follows:-

1. Ms. Aisha – All theory subjects
2. Ms. Veena – Advanced accounting
3. Mrs. Vrinda – Income tax
4. Mrs. Parvathi – Computer subjects

Seminars on different subjects are organized by the management on a regular basis, which in turn helps the students to understand the subject in an even better manner.

Fee structure of B.com (Computers) is as follows:-

1st year- Rs. 10,200/-
2nd year- Rs. 9,850/-
3rd year- Rs. 10,000/-

For B.com (Regular) it is:-

1st year- Rs. 9900/-
2nd year- Rs. 9550/-

Also, there are scholarships provided by the management, but only for the SC/ST and OBC students and that too on approval of all the necessary certificates. There are around 70 seats available for regular students and 60 for the students with computers as a subject. There is 1 computer laboratory for the students, equipped with 30 computers loaded with software like Oracle 8.1 and Tally 7.2. The only problem with the computers is that, they are very slow. According to Neeti Mishra, a student of 3rd year B.Com, “Our College is one of the best college according to the academic performances of the students. If someone just wants to study and do no masti, Wesley Degree College for Women is the best place for them”.

Though the infrastructure of the college is in a pathetic state, the students of the college have come out with flying colours at the end of their academic session. The management of the college now is planning to renovate everything starting from the chairs,on which students sit to the building. Campus placements are also organized by the college management, but not in the campus of WDCW, but in the campus of Wesley Degree College (Co-Ed), S.P.Road.

So, for all the girls, who are planning to take up science or commerce as their subject in graduation, Wesley Degree College for Women is a good option. With not such a high fee and good academic results, WDCW could be a nice choice for students aspiring for high percentage in their graduation.
