After two months of the collective efforts from the staff and students of the Science club SPECTRUM, the day scheduled for Constellation-’09, the annual inter collegiate science festival in St.Francis College for Women had finally arrived. Organized on the 29th August, 2009 the festival saw a large turnout of students from various colleges from in and around Hyderabad. (Picture: Crowd at Constellation. Credit: Miss Tick)

The festival was declared open in an inaugural ceremony in the morning. The chief guest for the occasion was one of the most eminent scientists of the city Padmashree Dr. Harsh Gupta, Raja Ramana fellow NGRI, Hyderabad. In his address to students, Dr. Gupta urged the students to chase their dreams in spite of all the odds that come in the way.

The inaugural ceremony was followed by the start of various events and participation entries came pouring in. The events mainly comprised of the experimental demonstrations in the different branches of science, power point presentation, experiments based on recycling of waste. Topics like “Human Cloning” and “Natural disasters” were chosen for the debate and collage making competitions.

Also, there were some events in which participants were at their creative best. “Spin a Yarn!” was one such event where the students wrote a story based on the slide show shown to them. This event was the one with maximum number of entries.  Multiple rounds of fun activities were organized to keep the students engaged throughout the day. Be it scramble, crossword puzzle, Scientific Tambola or fun with science all of them were well received by the students of various colleges.

Like every year the treasure hunt based on mathematical equations saw a complete bollywood-like running around the campus, panting, out of breath participants. Some hunting for clues, some cursing their inability to crack them, it was one of the most action-packed fun event in the festival.

Students were also seen having a great time enjoying the sumptuous fare put up in the lawns. Chaat, Ice golas, Pav bhaji, corn, every stall was equally crowded and saw students from various colleges bonding over plates of chaat. A city rock band “Alter Egos” enthralled the students in an hour long performance and some head-bangers could not control their excitement and indulged in what they are best at!

The girls in blue, the club volunteers and core group members of the club were almost everywhere around the campus assisting participants with information, coordinating the events, taking care of the judges’ needs and they made sure the proceedings were smooth. Nonetheless they took out time to enjoy the festival and having a good time.

The note of finality was brought by the valedictory function in which the festival events were summarized followed by a dance performance by P.G Microbiology students. The prize distribution saw a lot of howling, cheering and many Miss India like face-clasped-in-surprise-and-disbelief looks. Students from various colleges bagged several prizes and two students won the ‘Scientist of the day’ prizes. The success of Constellation ‘09 was a matter of great pride for the organizing committee and the staff and the festival ended with a customary vote of thanks and the promise to come back next year with a bigger bang!
