Shaastra 09 ready to launch 01

The months of September and October mark the beginning of the fest season for B.Tech students. IIT Madras is all set to unveil the magic with their annual technical fest SHAASTRA ’09. The celebrated technical festival of IIT-M is all set to begin on the 30th of September and will continue till 4th of October.

Shaastra is conducted every year in the first week of October. The fest is conducted for 5 days and attracts a lot of students from all over the nation. The Golden edition of IIT’s Shaastra ’08 was a big crowd puller with interesting events such as Robotics, Contraptions, Project X etc. Shaastra ’09 promises to deliver much more than Shaastra ’08. The logo of Shaastra, cubes with number 2 on all the faces depicts Albert Einstein’s statement, ‘God does not play dice with the world’. The 5 day fest comprises of many project contests, quizzes, workshops, presentations and guest lectures. Shaastra is one of the forerunners in the country and has led the way for various other colleges to organize fests that are handled purely by the students. It also has an ISO certification for its quality implementation.

Events conducted at Shaastra are very different from the events of other college fests. If paper presentations and technical quizzes are all what we get to see in most of the fests, then Shaastra proves to be completely different. Shaastra encourages new and innovative thinking among  students. It focuses more on implementation than presentation. It gives opportunities to students to think out of the box and do something creative. It is the best place to prove the so called ‘Engineer Skills’.

Shaastra ‘09 will introduce for the first time an event called Aerobotics, which is a blend of aero-modeling and robotics. Along with this there are many more interesting events related to coding and designing. The laser show held at the Shaastra ‘08 attracted an audience of 9000 people and left each one of them amazed. This year Shaastra brings an air show in which RC aircrafts will perform stunts. “Shaastra ’08 was simply superb. Events like Robotics left us with no words. I am expecting something bigger and better from Shaastra ‘09”, says Hiran, a B.Tech 3rd year student, who was a part of Shaastra ’08. “Events like making gliders out of trash or making small cars and having a race competition are different from regular events we get to see in other technical fests. Every thing is a practical implementation of what we learn in our course study”, opines another B.Tech student, Nithya. Shaastra also provides many online events for people, who cannot attend to the fest. Shaastra ’09 has online events like Online Puzzle Championship, Online Math Quiz, Online Science Fiction Writing. Shaastra Car is one more interesting event of Shaastra ’09, where students battle to design and manufacture a car.

There will be a number of workshops conducted this year in Cinematography, Computer Security and Mechatronics, CUDA etc. Students, who are interested to be a part of Shaastra can apply for accommodation on campus. They will be allotted rooms in the campus at nominal rates. “Staying in the campus premises for the five fest days was one of my best experiences I’ve had till date. The campus never sleeps during the fest. Even at 2 or 3 in the early morning, you’ll find students having a nice cup of steaming coffee at the Coffee Day in the campus”, recalls Aakanksha, who attended Shaastra last year.

The best part of Shaastra is that it costs absolutely nothing to participate in any of the events. The registration fee for all the events is zero! All one needs to do is get a Shaastra ID and participate in any event he/she wishes to. Shaastra gives room for showcasing the talent of the students, provides opportunities to learn innumerable new things and stands true to its motto ‘Adapt, Evolve and Enjoy’.
