Career Guidance Seminar @ SWEC
The word ‘Recession’ is being hyped out of proportion in the recent past and has landed many students in confusion. Many under graduate students are not very sure of the next step they’ll take after they complete their course and the case with the students of Sridevi Engineering College is no different! In such a scenario, a seminar on career guidance was conducted at Sridevi Engineering College (SWEC) on 20th Oct 2009.
With almost no availability of jobs in the present days, pursuing higher studies was projected as a better option in the seminar. When it comes to higher studies i.e, graduate programs for engineering students then the choices available would be either an M.Tech/MS or an MBA. Mr.Azim from TIME (Triumphant Institute of Management Education) and Mr.Raj from Visu had attended the seminar and gave a brief introduction about the MBA and MS/M.Tech programs. Many students from 3rd year and 4th year of B.Tech had turned up for the seminar.
Mr.Raj spoke about the benefits of pursuing an MS degree after the B.Tech. He spoke about how the markets of the world are recovering from the economic wrath. He mainly concentrated on the improving conditions of the American economy. With a speedy recovery shown by the US, he opined that an MS degree in US would be very useful to the students. “If we look at the rate at which the markets are developing in US, by the time you (the students) are done with your MS degree, there will be quite a lot of opportunities,” said Raj. An introduction to GRE (Graduate Record Examination), which enables students to go ahead with their MS programs in US, was also given. GRE consists of three sections -
- Verbal Section
- Quantitative Ability Section
- Analytical Reasoning Section
With a good GRE score along with a good academic aggregate in B.Tech, one can be seated in reputed universities in USA. “I had plans of working after my B.Tech but the present situation of getting a good job in a good company seems a little difficult. So I guess it’s time for me to change my plan,” says Deepthi, 4th year student.
Mr. Azim briefed the students about the MBA programs available and the respective entrance examinations that have to be taken. He explained that for students who are looking forward to doing an MBA in reputed colleges in India, CAT (Common Admission Test) would be the most advisable entrance exam. “A serious preparation of 6 months is sufficient to crack CAT. But I stress on ‘serious preparation’ which is very important,” stated Azim. For pursuing an MBA program in US, GMAT is the most preferred examination. Azim also opined that the scope for an MBA graduate is very wide when compared to other graduates. “For people like me who aren’t interested in the core subjects, MBA is a better option when compared to M.Tech or MS,” says a 3rd year student Mounica.
The seminar gave the required guidance to students to plan appropriately for their future during tough times like recession.
