Colleges have started to get trendy again and the latest fashion fad to hit the students especially the Engineering 1st years is the college bags craze. A race to compete and survive the ever changing trends is nearly impossible and thus to cater to ones own dire need of catching up with the latest, makes the business an all time thriving one.
Ask Varuna, a fresher at CMEC and she says, “Whether we carry books to college or not, it’s really necessary to carry a chic bag to make a statement”. They say necessity is the mother of invention, but did we ever realize how a thing becomes a necessity and serves a purpose for an invented object. Not very long time college bags were simple in style and mostly came in black blue or brown color but the scenario has changed completely, and bags come in various styles, there are printed bags, embroidered bags, torn bags and so on and on.
A little survey among the college crowd shows even if this is in perfect state to be used one discards it just because its not in trend, of every 10 students 7 would want a new bag for every two months and 8 out of 10 believe that the bags which are considered in style serve no purpose to carry their books or other stuff like water bottles etc, but still they carry it along for the heck of it.
Rehan, a second year student tells us he has changed around 10 bags since he joined college and now realizes that rather than going for new ones he could just keep on rotating the ones he has, as all look new and no one bothers to remember that he got them a year ago or so. Surprisingly there are still many students other than the crazed ones who realize the importance of a college bag and opt for bulkier and heavier bags, which though look bad trend wise and are bound to stay out of fashion, but these bags come handy to carry around all books, lunch box, cell phones and everything one could think to carry along.
Bags not only are made up of cloth or rexine anymore. Ramya, a eco Friendly person tells us ever since she saw the jute bags, she fell in love with them and has been using only jute made bags not only for college purpose but her complete accessories have changed which largely include, an evening purse made up of jute, a hand clutch of jute again and many more. If people thought that bags are all what they are called, guess they are wrong! There are Jholas, Back Packs, Slingers, Messenger bags and the list goes on. The hippest ones doing the rounds among college students are the ones which have a printed design on black backgorund, affordable and easy to use.
Imran says, pockets in the bags always confused him to find where the book or paper or pens were and these bags were a rescue as now he just dumped all his books in his bag and Voila! He’s ready to go. But then opinions differ and so do needs, just the opposite of Imran, Ashok always wants a bag, which have atleast 5-6 pockets of various shapes and size, he says, “I can’t combine my books with lunch box (possibility of oil spills, says he) or even lunch box and water bottle (one is hot and other one cold)”
There is another category of students, who need different bags for different days in college. Hareesh says, “I’ve one bag for regular college days, one for exams, and one for outings etc”. Wonder if he has different pens for different occasion and different set of clothes and shoes too. Then there is one last type of students, who stay least affected by the Bag trends, those who come to college with a clear mind and empty hands, they truly believe that no one in the world has come carrying anything in their hands and would leave this world in the same way. Hence they follow the same approach in day to day life too.
And for those who have not yet caught up with the changing styles; in the world of snazzy and cool bags, one could only say: BAG IT BEFORE ITS TOO LATE
