GNITS – Time for Campus Placements!
The word recession has become a common answer to the many troubles faced by people all around these days. The students, especially the ones who are about to graduate, are facing tough times getting the ‘most promising’ engineering jobs. During the past few years, engineering has raised to its peak as has proved itself in providing easier settlement with on campus recruitment. Parents wanted an easy and early settlement for their kids, particularly, in the middle-class and lower-class backgrounds. Thus, the number of students opting engineering at the graduate level went sky high and so did the number of colleges offering the course.
Somehow, all the engineering magic seems to have vanished into thin air. This year has lead to lot of confusion amongst the final years, so as what to do about their future. A lot of colleges, in spite of their best efforts, are failing to offer campus placements to their students. Hence, many of the students who were aiming to work immediately after graduation are being forced to change their choices and are looking at future studies as the obvious substitute. Be it M.S, M.Tech or MBA, an increased number of students are struggling with the respective competitive exams.
Yet, there are some well established institutes which have managed to pull off the campus placements with ease. GNITS stands out as one amongst the institutes, which are providing campus recruitments to its students even during the rough times. GNITarians are all geared up to take their placements with as much ease and élan as they take up any task at hand. Addressing the students, the HR manager, Mr. Roopesh Sen Gupta said “The College will be getting placements like every year. That will be my responsibility and working for it will be yours.” As the students breathe a sigh of relief at the news, they realize that they also need to work hard towards achieving their jobs and setting their career.
While some of the students are all set to take up the interviews at any given time with every requirement fulfilled, there are a few others that need a helping hand. So, placement training was provided to the students by Globerana for 8 weeks covering all the important aspects of the process of getting through placements. Some of the aspects covered were the preparation of résumé, aptitude training, verbal ability training, mock interviews, etc. Grishma, who attended the training says, “The training was really helpful, especially because I did not have the basic idea about a lot of these things before.” On the other hand, there were a few who were already well versed with most of these aspects, thanks to the training they had to undergo to face the competitive exams like CAT and GRE.
The packages this year may not be as luring as the yesteryear’s, but the phrase, ‘Something is better than nothing’ says it all. The best institutes of the country, IIT’s are also facing similar problems, although not at the same level of severity as the regional colleges. “Basically, companies which came this year said that their requirement was less. So, traditionally companies which used to be called ‘truck’ companies due to their large intake took significantly less number of students this year,” shares Sankar of IIT, Guwahati.

Whatever may be the case, if one is aiming for an immediate career after engineering, one has to have a few key skills, like good communication and sound technical knowledge. Depending on the requirement of the company, the skill set of the students would be under test. If software companies gave preference to communication skills, the core companies would always give high importance to the technical skills of the students.
“Some of the companies that are expected to come on campus this year are Infosys, Delloite, ADP, Accenture, HP, Kony labs, etc. The process of recruiting may be more stringent this time; nevertheless, hard work always pays off,” opines Priyanka of GNITS.
