It Happens Here :>

A cry of exhilaration 01

The fruit of our perseverance, the reward for academic labor, the cause for many sleepless nights in anticipation, the source of elation for countless days can all be expressed in a single word “RESULTS”. Be it a yearly result or a semester one, they carry the same significance. The tension revolving around the examinations is suitably concluded with more anxious days involved with the results.

From the meagre internal exam results displayed on a notice board to the university results expressed on the world wide web, they have this quality of creating anxiety among the so called “Cool” students too. The social networking sites such as Facebook have a field day with the excitement around the results. Sara Baig, a beautiful third year girl at SUCP expresses her annoyance at being regularly troubled by the “Hoax” result calls. Her Facebook status reads, “DO NOT… and i repeat… DO NOT MSG ME IF THE RESULTS ARE OUT!”. Similarly, the blogs too are filled with abundant messages expressing happiness, some of them quite ecstatic, some showing regret, while some screaming foul on the part of the university.

JNTU includes the surprise quotient by not having a clear date of announcement for the results. Md Sohail Uddin, a second year student, finds it rather amusing that a university of such repute has no sense of interaction with the students. He adds,”Every year, we have to wait for some kind of intimation from the college authorities; that the results are declared.” The sudden announcement creates a frenzied atmosphere among the students. Faiza Zainab, another second year student says, “The time interval between the news of the results declaration and the actual viewing of the results is quite strenuous.” She reiterates the need of a proper channel of information between the students and the university.

Feb 10th, saw a similar atmosphere at SUCP, with students running haphazardly trying to confirm whether the results were actually released or not. Followed by a similar rush to the nearby internet cafes to confirm their results. This resulted in near empty classrooms for the entire afternoon session.

The lecturers find it quite relieving that the students still care for their academic achievements. Mrs. Sree Devi, a highly respected professor, though, lays more impetus on the practical application of the knowledge attained in college than the marks obtained in a theoretical examination. She feels, “The student should learn to overcome the habit of memorizing stuff during the preparation for examinations.” But the marks are of huge essence as they have help in determining  the progress of an individual. The percentage, though it is subtly rejected by the students has more importance than imagined. The teachers believe the percentage lays the foundation for the higher studies ahead.

The lecturers investigating about the result of their “PET” students and choosing some classy sarcastic statements for those who are regularly subjected to their scrutiny. This is another regular thing happening after the results get declared.

With the advent of the internet, it seems a long time ago that a student used to wake up in the early hours of the morning and join a stretched line of individuals to obtain the newspaper containing the results. Now, the results are a click away and could be accessed anywhere in the world provided the “server” is not blocked. The sudden increase in the usage of the website decreases the speed of the user which is considered a serious drawback. With the increasing technology, the access has become quite effortless.

The results come along with their own style of vocabulary. Words such as ALL CLEAR, backlogs, Treats gain a whole lot of importance during this time. The aftermath of the results has everything in it. From the excitement of those managing to clear all the subjects to the depression of those stuck with a couple of subjects here and there. From those lamenting over the loss of a couple of marks to those careless enough to plan for a supplementary ahead. The celebrations too holds its own place after the results. The students shouting with excitement, hugging each other, dancing around together, planning parties for the whole week ahead. The occasional requests for treats are met with smiling faces to be rejected later.

A quote somewhere that catches the eye, that reads, “A student who changes the course of history is probably taking an Exam”. On a serious note, the above quote can be taken in the context that the result of an examination can change anything related to the future.

With all the tensed feelings around, the results is a time where the friends can come together, embrace each other and share their happiness. What better time to declare it to them…?

“PATTHEY, ALL CLEAR!!!”
