Attitude and Addiction
Attitude is the most frequently used word in the life of a student. It has numerous meanings and its definition is modified and changed with one’s personal interpretation and perspective of life. While some consider it to be a disposition or belief or state of mind and posture one is in while interacting with another, many others prefer to define it as the manner in which one carries oneself. It is typically bifurcated into two categories namely Good attitude and Bad attitude. People tend to have either of them and the main reason why one develops an attitude is because of low self-esteem or immaturity or even pride for that matter.
Maria Gomez, a student of St.Mary’s College, Yousufguda, says, “In a college like mine, its very essential to have an attitude, be it a good one or a bad one. Having a good attitude was always something that I considered very essential and it is a fact that most of the youngsters today posses a bad attitude towards life in general, despite the negative factors associated with it. People consider it to be cool and barely do they realize the impact of having an attitude problem.” Arrogance, impudence, impatience and abusive language are some of the aspects of having a bad attitude. It not only diminishes one’s character but also changes an individual’s outlook of life. Being aggressive and rash does not only present one’s upbringing but also one’s negative state of mind.
Divya Sharma, a student of Malla Reddy Engineering College says, “Having a positive attitude can potentially affect your life in college. Long distance traveling, boring lectures, clashes with friends and results can sometimes screw you up royally. By developing a good attitude and being humble, helpful, friendly and cheerful one can make life in college interesting and fun. It all depends on the person alone and not the surroundings.” By possessing selfless thinking, controlling negative thinking and enhancing self esteem, one can enjoy a peaceful existence.
Addiction is another rising issue among the youth. It is not just a disorder which is caused by taking anything in excess but also something that can ruin one’s physical and mental status and eventually lead to death. It is affected by the environmental, social and genetic factors of an individual. Pre-occupation and disturbed behavior are some of the aspects of it. It consists of various types namely addiction to Drugs, Alcohol, Gaming, Food, Reading, Internet and many more. Video Game addiction has become the most important issue that is not just harmful but also destroys one’s mental capacity. It isolates the person from socializing and inculcates a feeling of compulsion and obsession.

Narman Singh, a student of Malla Reddy Institute of Technology, says, “I’ve been playing video games for the past 6 years now and I can barely imagine myself without playing my favorite game on a daily basis. I remember once that my parents had been out of station and I was left alone at home, I skipped 2 days of college just to play my favorite game which I eventually completed. I got tremendous satisfaction and winning the game also made me popular among my friends who kept trying to finish a particular level which seemed to be impossible to complete.”
Smoking, being the next popular addiction apart from alcohol, youngsters tend to smoke especially when they are among friends or companions and tend to be oblivious to the fact that smoking kills faster and ends a victim’s life 10-15 years earlier. Alcohol and smoking potentially harms a student’s learning capacity and makes the process of focusing attention very difficult. Despite the numerous organizations put up regarding the prevention of smoking, minority of the smokers are found to either reduce the amount or quit smoking, whereas the remaining find it nearly impossible as they cannot modify their dependance on smoking.

Jitesh Kumar, a student of St.Mary’s College, Yousufguda, says, “I smoke generally when I’m bored or I am waiting for someone to come. Apart from that I smoke when I drink, the main reason being the increase in the effect of intoxication.” Internet addiction is a rising threat among the youth which is mainly caused by the increase in the number of social-networking, gaming and porn websites
Tina D’Cruz, a student of Malla reddy college of engineering says, “I’m hopelessly addicted to caffeine, I either crave for coffee or coke every hour of the day. Apart from reading endlessly, I consume a lot of caffeine which I know is not a good thing but I’m helpless as I feel deprived without it. It boosts up my energy and hence I can’t get over it.”
One needs to develop a very strong will power and stable mind in order to refrain the development of attitude or the various forms of addiction and hence the ability of possessing control over emotions, being ignorant to the negative aspects of life and having a good state of mind can help one to avoid having a bad attitude or addiction.
