SUCP Sports and Cultural Week 2010
The month of March at Sultan-ul-Uloom College of Pharmacy (SUCP) brings along with it an increase in the work load on the budding pharmacists. From the demoralizing Internal examinations to the increasing amount of practical record work, the problems are aplenty. But as the famous English idiom says, ‘Every Dark cloud has a silver lining‘, the silver lining for the SUCPians comes in the form of the Annual Sports cum Cultural week organised by the faculty and the final year students. The annual event is highly competitive and entertaining which fills the chasm created by the absence of a full fledged fest at the college. The year 2010 too witnessed a spectacular sports week which concluded with the Annual Day organized on the 29th of March.
Day 1 of the sports week comprised of the Badminton event for both boys and girls, Chess and Carrom board game for the boys followed by the Throw ball event for the girls. The sports complex had a completely different look from its usual haunted appearance. The small badminton court was surrounded on all sides by cheering girls, lifting the spirits of their friends toiling away on the court. While the girls were having their share of fun, the boys were concentrating on their various moves and shots on their respective board games. Syed Ali Hussain Abedi, a second year student expressed remorse on missing the sports week in his first year due to illness. He said, ” Participation in the events brings out the best in everybody.” He further added, “Finishing runner up in the Carrom board competition was definitely satisfying.” Chess, always the game of kings yet, played by all, was another sport that attracted loads of participation.

Day 2 began with the game of table tennis, which showcased the deft stroke play of the participants. Students from all the years participated extensively in this event which had its fair share of upsets with many fancied seniors biting the dust due to some fabulous work by the juniors. Raza Hyder, one of the junior students emerged victorious at the end of the competition which took around 3 hours to complete. The focus was then shifted to the grounds where the Volley ball event was conducted. At the end of the day, the bruised elbows and the grazed knees were the souvenirs of a competition well fought for. While the boys were sweating it out on the grounds, the girls continued their tryst with the indoor games such as Chess, Carrom board and Table Tennis. Tennikoit was organized specially for the girls on the second day of the sports week.
The entire third day of the sports week was dedicated to Cricket. With a total of eight teams participating in the competition, it took the whole day for the triumphant team to be decided. As always, the cricket competition had its share of controversies and altercations between the competing students which usually happens due to the emotional attachment to the game of Cricket. But the situations were brought into control by the supervising in-charges at the ground. The First year team rose beyond all expectations and finished on the top. The semifinal match between the teams from second and third year was a thrilling encounter with the third year students winning the match after a SUPER over (the match ended in a TIE). All sporting events done and dusted, the attention was then shifted to the cultural part of the week.

The cultural events were held in the well equipped seminar hall of SUCP. The seminar hall with its established sound facility and seating arrangements has served as a platform for hundreds of SUCPians to develop their abilities . Day 4 started with the Mehendi designing competition for the girls, which was a new addition this year. The girls appreciated the efforts of the seniors in conducting the competition by participating in large numbers. The next event that followed was the Elocution competition. The students where asked to voice their opinion on the topic of ”Global Warming”. The long drawn speeches were highly appreciated by both the students and faculty members alike. JUST A MINUTE session or JAM as everyone calls it was the next event. Noura Anees, a dynamic second year student feels, “JAM session is one of the most entertaining parts of the sports week.” She continues, “To see even the smartest of the students stammering in front of a vociferous crowd is extremely funny. I feel it takes a lot of courage to take the stage even for a minute”. The JAM session was highly charged up and choosing a worthy winner was an arduous task for the judges.
The next day was a team affair with competitions such as Quiz, Dumb charades and Debate. The topics for Debate were extremely interesting and the participating teams were cheered on throughout the competition. The Essay writing competition in the morning had the volatile topic of Global Recession to discuss. A team of 3 students each was required for the Quiz, Debate etc. This lead to the exhibition of qualities such as Team spirit and the ability to win as a group.

The final day of the week was the most sought after for all the students with events such as singing and the highly anticipated skit part. The singing competition involved some accomplished singers and also those who where there to entertain the audience. The faculty members had their share of fun through the various participants and they didn’t back away from appreciating the contestants. The Skit event is probably the most anticipated of the lot. The various costumes, the funny topics, the moral messages and some uninhibited acting by the students makes this event a definite ‘Hit’ among the audience. The various roles played by the actors were worthy to be remembered for a long time. “Sports week is that time of the year when all the students come together and participate in a friendly environment.” asserts Masroor Nishath, a charismatic third year student. She reminisces all the wonderful memories during her three years at SUCP and expresses gloom at the thought of having just one year left for her graduation.
As all good things come to an end, the sports week ended with the Annual day held on the 29th of march. The function was attended by dignitaries such as Mr Zafar Javeed, the chairman of Sultan ul uloom Education Society, Mr Roop Lal Shah, the Advisor of the society and other respected members of the society. The awards ceremony was postponed due to the ensuing communal tension in the various parts of the city. The dinner after the function was another delectable experience for everyone.
Knute Rockne, a retired American football player once said, “One man practicing sportsmanship is far better than hundred teaching it.” This quote definitely lays impetus on sportsmanship and its practice, and the students at SUCP can easily boast of a platform on which they can practice sportsmanship.
SUCP SPORTS/CULTURAL WEEK 2010 unquestionably preached sportsmanship.
