It was not what could be called an ideal day for partying. The sun was hot outside; the room was sultry inside… But who cares!! It was a day to remember throughout their life for the juniors. After all it was their fresher’s party!! The second years in Sri Devi Women’s Engineering College came together to host the fresher’s party for the first years, welcoming them into their family.

‘‘After a lot of arguments and discussions with the Principal, we finally agreed on separate parties for each branch”, says Kehkasha Khanam, the representative of CSE, SWEC.

Each branch was allotted a seminar hall in the college for the party.

The college came alive with colors over the weekend as ECEA, EIE and IT hosted their party on Sunday, the 4th of April while CSE, EEE , ECE gave it on the 5th.

”The party preparations started about 2-3 weeks prior to it. Organizing the whole event was tiring as well as fun”, says Sindhu Swarna of CSEA, SWEC.

The campus bustled with activity as party posters were put up all over the campus. Invitations were drawn and banners hanged as the D-day drew near.

<img class="size-medium wp-image-11401 " src="http://www.vidyouth.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/venue-300x175.jpg" alt="Esperanza- The Party Venue.
<img class="size-medium wp-image-11656" src="http://www.vidyouth.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/banner-300x254.jpg" alt="Banners around the campus.
‘‘The cost of the entire party was borne by us. We didn’t have any help from the college management. Even the setting up of tents, the hall’s decorations, all had to be taken care by us”, says Shravanthi Kovur of EIE, SWEC.

The day finally came when all the CSE juniors got traditional by draping themselves in a sari and dropped into Esperanza, the CSEA’s fresher’s party!

”Many juniors and seniors were against the dress code, but it had to be followed, being the college’s tradition!!”, says Sujatha Burigen of SWEC.

”It was nice to see all the girls in saris that day. Nowadays saris have become a rarity among women, we wanted all the girls to go down to our traditional roots at least on this day”, says Mrs. Y. Rajashree, Principal of Sri Devi women’s college.

The CSE party started at 11:00 in the morning. The start of the party was marked by the cutting of cake by the department head. Later, as the party progressed the juniors had a great time walking on the ramp.

‘‘We wanted it to be their day entirely. All the games, Dances were for and done by the juniors”, says Nanditha Reddy, CSEA, SWEC.

Each of the junior was given a candy, which was supposed to be given to their favorite senior. The senior with maximum number of candies was adjudged as the best senior at the end.

<img class="size-medium wp-image-11397" src="http://www.vidyouth.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/girls-in-traditional-attire-300x213.jpg" alt="Dress code for the party-Saree.
Games like fast texting, find your partner were held for the juniors. All these events set aside; the main attraction in the party was the jukebox!

The seniors and juniors forgot all their differences as they danced to the mixes of DJ Ankit Sharma.

“It was nice to see such an enthusiastic crowd! The level of Euphoria amongst the girls was pretty infectious “, quips Ankit Sharma.

”We had an awesome time! Best was the jukebox, but we just felt bad that it lasted only for an hour or so”, says Amulya Nayar, a junior of CSE, SWEC.

The end of the jukebox saw the girls breaking up for lunch.

”The food was delicious. Added to it, all of us were starving, because of all the dancing. So, we literally hogged the food”, says Priyanka Reddy, a First year, SWEC.

All the branches hosting their party on Monday were provided with tents by the college management for lunch.

The girls reassembled in the party venue once again for few more rounds of ramp walk and games. About 12 girls were short listed from the juniors who were made to walk the ramp once again. These 12 girls were given a situation to enact on. The best 6 amongst them were finalized for the titles.

‘‘The situations were pretty funny. I had to propose to one of my senior and have her convinced to accept it”, says Pranathi Reddy.

‘‘We judged them based on their performance and behavior today. We had an introductory session with the juniors a few days prior to the party, wherein we got to know how talented each junior was”, says Nikitha Merrylene, one of the judges.

The titles were finally announced to a lot of cheering from the juniors. Some of the titles were Miss. Esperanza, Miss Congeniality, Miss. Panache, Miss Showstopper and Miss Rapunzel.

”I was Miss Hair the last year, in my fresher’s party. So, I gave away the award to my junior this time”, beams Srinidhi Bhandaru, a second yearer.

‘‘The gifts given to us were awesome!! I was adjudged Miss. Talent for which I was given a cute stuffed toy! I love it”, gushes Sujitha Rao, one of the title winners.

<img class="size-medium wp-image-11398" src="http://www.vidyouth.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/6-finalists-300x205.jpg" alt="The 6 finalists of the day.
Proposing the vote of thanks on behalf of all the juniors, Prasanna C, the first year’s representative gushes,’ I never had a proper interaction with my seniors. I just knew a few of them. But now, I feel all my seniors are my good friends. I would love to thank all my seniors for such an awesome party, which would be forever cherished by each and every junior, here. We promise to give you an equally enthralling farewell! Thank you seniors! Love you all”.

The party ended on a happy note as all the juniors went home with a complimentary gift.

‘‘We didn’t want any of them to go home unsatisfied. The happiness was evident in their faces when they opened their goody bags”, says Monica May.

‘‘We had many differences at the time of organizing, many words were exchanged! But today, going by the juniors reaction, we feel all the pain we took was worth it’’, says a happy but tired Sindhu Swarna.

Beginning from school, college and university or almost all educational institutions have incorporated the Annual Day function as a compulsory celebration in their curriculum. These institutes choose this an opportunity to exhibit the the talents in their possession, catering to different walks of life and encouraging them to be an asset to the nation.

The beam of laughter, the tears of sorrow, the hard work, appreciation and criticisms and then the final countdown begins for the most awaited day.

“Triumph” is not just a name, but a brand in itself which relates to hard work, enthusiasm, high

spirits & above all the meaning to achieve a sense of victory, not just as an individual but being as a team & be a victor throughout our life.

Initiation

“The people carry the kind of warmth that’s wonderful & unique, a bright & happy outlook that’s such a joy to share. The carry their own sunshine with them everywhere the go, it makes them very special and extra nice to know. That is the specialty of CMECians” stated one of the anchors G.Keerthi Sharma of ECE 4th year from CM Engineering College.

Dignitaries of the Eve

The evening was initiated by calling Shri CH Malla Reddy, chairman of Malla Reddy Group of Institutions; Chief guest : Mr.G Bala Kishore, director of factories of Andhra Pradesh; Guest of honour: Mr.K Prbhakar Rao, director of capital IQ Information Systems Pvt. Ltd; Prof. R. Madan Mohan & Dr. Konaraih, director of Academics MRGI; G. Ram Reddy, director of administration; Principal Dr.Talla Siva Prasad & AO Retd.Col. Sita Rama Rao on to the dias.

The lighting of the lamp by the dignitaries on the dias marked the beginning of the evening program.

Throw Ball Team being awarded by the chief guest

Prize Distribution

The students were honored with prizes for various academic activities such as the toppers of every branch of the year were given certificates. Also trophies were given for non academic activities (sports) – Throw ball, Cricket, Table Tennis, Basket Ball, etc. The chairman enlightened the gathering with his valuable words. The Chief Guest and other dignitaries too shared their thoughts and spoke about the overall development of a student that can be achieved not just by being excellent in academics but also in other cultural activities and encouraged the students with their challenging words for the coming up final exams.

Organization

There were 2 projectors kept in locations so that people in the middle and back rows could see the plays unhindered. The projections also helped close-up shots that caught the emotions of actors and dancers very well.

A fluid narration was another hall-mark of the event. The text of narration before each story was well written. The anchoring of the evening was done by Keerti Sharma from ECE 4th year, Gaurav Kaushal from ANE 4th year, Preetham Raghu from ANE 3rd year & Shashank Avvaru from 1st year.

“They did it so clearly with expressions that beat many masters of ceremonies you would see on many other award ceremonies”, says Sonali Verma, a 3rd year student from CM Engineering College. The narration filled up the gaps in the story. Also before every play or dance started, there was a narration explaining it.

The arrangements for the function were from A to Z .

EVENTS

Welcoming Performance

The first performance was a classical dance by Sri Vidya and group of seven girls . “Our dance will be portraying different forms of Lord Ganesha by students of various streams like ANE, CSE & MBA”, says Sri Vidya of CM Engineering College.

The choreography of this dance was par excellence. It was a flamboyant, flowing and full-filling performance. The first dance exceeded all expectations and just went through the roof. It set a very high level of expectation for all other plays and dances that followed.

The program continued with the second performance done by Alikheya & group. “We are gonna do Bollywood salsa & freestyle on medley of 3 songs”, says Nisarg Shah of

CSE 3rd year, who choreographed one of the song Zoobie Doobie for his group. “It took us three days to practise. College provided the choreographers from outside. It was Raju sir who helped to choreograph most of the dances for tonight”, says Durga Aduri of CSE 3rd year from CM Engineering College.

Skit

It was followed by a skit –“Em Maya Chesave” by IT group which took the audience through four years of B-tech life in just 4 minutes. The hallmark of the story was the characters. They were made up so well, spoke so well, and depicted their emotions so well. Dialogues were also very good. The play made everybody hold their stomach.

Tribute to Michael Jackson

Then there was the highlight of the event, the dance performance by six students giving a tribute to MJ. “We love MJ” chorused everyone in the group. “He is still living in our hearts”, says P.S Pavan. “Its gonna be the best performance of the evening”, says the lead of the group Srinivas Pradeep confidently. He also says, “MJ is my true inspiration. We are going to give the deadly dangerous performance including stunts. It took us 10-15 days to practice it all.”

The performance was truly worth of a standing ovation. Every step left the audience in awe. Each step needs to be seen to be enjoyed. Words will just be limiting to describe about this group.

After the breath taking performance there was again a group dance by ten students of ECE & CSE. “Its all about B tech life and at the ending we’ll show how much we care and love our parents ”, says Anurag Agarwal from ECE of CM Engineering College. Raju sir choreographed the performance in three days.

Solo Performances

There were also few solo dance performances by Vimesh on “Upananta ni prema”. “My love is gone “ by Vishwanath of IT 4th year. Anil kumar studying MBA also did a solo performance imitating various stars from tollywood. G.Harish from IT 3rd year says, ” I’m going to give a solo dance performance on 200 watts which will be very stylish and western style which I self choreographed.”

Folk Dance Performance

Then there was a folk dance “Thayyum Thattayi” as well. “We are a group of ten students including five girls and five boys. It is choreographed by Srinivas sir”. Uszhama & S.Hamroz say, ”It a lambadi village dance, a mass kinda” when asked to present their view for their dance. While D.Sumalata describes the dance by saying, ”here the boys tease girls in a town but still the girls who are wearing all types of accessories are bold enough to take care of themselves”. “It is not only done by B-tech students but our group also includes students from MBA , MCA and CSE”, informs P. Anil Kumar of CM Engineering College.

”The time flew so fast. Alas it is not from my DVD player.

I cannot rewind it and watch it again” quips Sonali Verma of IT 3rd year from CM Engineering College.

The students, teachers, principal, staff who provided the concepts, all need to be congratulated for such a splendid show. True to the Principal’s words, everybody in the college has been constantly learning, as otherwise such a show is not possible.

The program was highly appreciated by every single person and indeed everyone who is a part of C.M Engineering College are proud to have another feather added to their cap of success.

College Fests and Muffakham Jah College of Engineering and Technology ( MJCET ) go hand in hand. The Biennial ADSOPHOS is a perfect example for the craze created by the fest at MJCET. The year 2010 too had its own bag full of events up for grabs. A reputed college, a picturesque campus and loads of energetic students make up the fest at the college we proudly call ” MJ” . The two day event comprised of a mosaic of events put together. The various engineering departments organised their own event approved by the faculty and department heads. To list out all the events,

The Information Technology Department( ITD) - BLITZKREIG 2010.

Civil Engineering Department- COLLOQUIUM 2010.

Electrical Engineering Department( EED ) – REFULGENCE 2010

Computer Science Engineering ( CSE ) – CYNOSURE 2010.

Mechanical Department- MECHALUTION 2010.

IEEE branch – STAC and SPAC 2010.

E cell – Festivity 2010

Robotix Club – ROBOLYMPIA 2010.

All the above fest had their own set of events. Both technical and Fun events combined

BLITZCREIG '10 .Credits :: Stupendous Calvin

together to provide a wonderful experience to the participants. Mounika Chintalpati, a second year student at SUCP, expresses jubilation at the fact that her college being so closely associated with MJ helps her to experience college fest of such magnitude. Mohd Zia Uddin, another second year student says, ” The extent to which the fest are conducted is mesmerising. The events conducted tested both physical and mental attributes of the students.” Each department had a plethora of events to their credit.

MOVIE MANIA ; Credits :: Stupendous Calvin

BLITZCREIG 2010 :: The IT department of MJCET probably organised the best Fest of the lot. It included events with cash incentives for the winners. The Fest comprised of Movie Mania, Programming/Debugging, Guess the Parts, Tech quiz . Paint ball, Poster Designing, Paper presentation, Loose screws, Beg Borrow Steal etc. Syed Qayam Hussain Razvi, a third year MJCET student and the organizer of Movie mania exclaims,” It was one hell of an experience managing the event. From publicizing the event to managing the participants was a difficult task.” He adds that it was a great learning experience. Nikhil Acharya, a young advertisement director was the judge for the event. He was enthralled by the ideas presented by the young student directors. The students felt extremely happy after interacting with Nikhil and gaining his piece of advice.

Crowd enjoying Movie Mania; Credits :: Stupendous Calvin

Beg Borrow Steal, was another event that invited loads of participants. It involved participants running crazily around the college in order to fulfill their task within the time limit. Maria Syed, an energetic SUCP second year student asserts, ” Beg Borrow Steal, BEST event of the lot.” She participated in a total of 6 events that included Clues Blues, Tech quiz, snap shot, loose screws, Role play and B.B.S. She finishes by saying that these two days were the best days of her graduation yet. Beg

Beg Borrow Steal; Credits :: Stupendous Calvin

Borrow Steal had its share of cheering crowds, both boys and girls alike.

The technical part of the fest consisted of competitions such as Debugging. Syed Mohd Abid Hussain, a second year student of IT at MJCET says, ” To use the knowledge obtained in class rooms in competitions is way better than toiling away in examinations” . The competition comprised of two parts , the written part followed by the practical application of the various programs in the laboratory.

CYNOSURE 2010 :: CYNOSURE organised by the Computer Sciences engineering department was another mouth watering sight. Events such as Bluff Master, Craft Arena, Quizzila, Raaz Mataaz, LAN gaming, Grafi’TEE’, Dreamer’s Day out and Mind Mania. The most acclaimed of the above events was Bluff Master (based on the TV show) and was appreciated by one and all. LAN gaming included computer games such as FIFA ‘09 and NASCAR.

STAC and SPAC 2010 :: The IEEE branch of MJCET organised STAC and SPAC which promised participation certificates for all the competitors. The events involved were Junkyard Wars, Role play, Hardware modelling, Mock Interviews,General quiz, Case Study, Ironic Safari and Paper Presentations. Many students hoped that their experiences in events such as Mock Interviews could help them in their quest to obtain employment after graduation. Mehdi Dashtee, a third year MJCET academic explains the same. He says, ” With a year left for graduation, it is of utmost importance to go through the process of interviewing and such events definitely help.”

COLLOQUIUM 2010 :: Civil Engineering true to its outdoor expectations organised the Cricket competition for all which stretched through most of the two days. The MJCET ground was divided into four equal halves. This allowed the organizers to conduct the event smoothly considering the fact that more than 30 teams participated totally. Syed Iqbal, a second year MJCET student, expressed satisfaction that he managed to reach the stage of the quater finals of the event in his first attempt.

ROBOLYMPIA 2010 :: The robotix club of MJCET managed to pull off a spectacular event

ROBOLYMPIA; Credits :: Stupendous Calvin

in the form of Robolympia. It had a series of events such as DEATH RACE, soccer with robots etc. The entry fee for the competitions was a meager 30 bucks. This lead to an increase in the competition.

FESTIVITY 2010 :: Another event with loads of events such as Business Quiz, Solution Presentation, 1 minute pitch, E- WARS, Hand Painting, Show and Tell and B quiz.REFULGENCE 2010, MECHALUTION 2010 were also a craze among the participants from different colleges.

To organize a fest of such magnitude requires abundance of hard work to achieve success. Syed Irfan Naqvi, a student member of the core committee of MJCET concerned with the organisation of the fest, lays emphasis on the coordination between the students and the faculty of the college. According to him, ” It takes months of planning to put together a fest that can satisfy the reputation of MJCET” . At the end of the day, he feels that the fest was a huge accomplishment and he congratulated his fellow organizers for a work well done.

Bob Dylan, an american singer and song writer once said, ” Colleges are like old-age homes except for the fact that more people die in colleges” . This quote sounds quite relevant in recent times with our education system keeps declining to new levels. But it is proved irrelevant by such enterprising activities in colleges nowadays. MJCET, on its part, always provides the student a platform to learn while they enjoy. April 9th & 10th 2010, will go a long way in justifying this reputation of the college we proudly say ” MJ” .

Farewells are always a hard affair for the graduating students who are obliged to leave their formal education and step into the real world. The separation from friends and teachers are a part of the parcel and to take up the responsibilities of the adult world, a duty. Varuna Jagganne shares her thoughts about the experiences as a student of O.U.C.W “Initially when I joined the college, I had a negative reaction to it but now I can’t believe that I spent three years here. I’m quite sad about leaving it, my friends and teachers. It has been quite a journey coming from a different country and the people here have helped me immensely to settle down and make it a home.” On winning the title of Miss O.U she said, “Winning the title was a huge surprise and a fantastic parting present. The people I met here and the memories that I’m taking away are going to go a long way in my life. I just want to thank everyone and specially my juniors who gave us such a wonderful party”.

The Dejected DJ Credits: Marianne Tulia

K. Priyanka seconds her, “I’m really going to miss all the teachers and friends that I met here. It is a really painful thing for me to leave this place which has given me so much. As for the farewell, it is the time when we enjoy with our classmates and juniors, which doesn’t happen very often. We greatly felt the absense of a dance performance by the juniors, however the farewell and the music by the DJ more that made up for it.”

As the most of the Bollywood goes with its share of controversies, tiffs and back stabbing and producer issues. This event was no exception in falling in line with those trends of Bollywood as well. Aditi Ashok shares her ordeal as an organizer, “It was a fun yet tedious experience which required putting in a humungous piece of soul into organizing it. We learnt that we have to get off our high horses to get money from people. The two-hour power cut taught us damage control.” Afroz Anjani, also regrets the power cut in the fun filled afternoon, “The power failure was a nuisance, otherwise it was the best party ever”.

Just as Bollywood moves on with its fortunes and errors, lessons learnt and bad memories packed. A genuinely heartfelt goodbye was conveyed with the banner which read ‘Phir milenge, Chalte Chalte’. A line from the famous SRK’s movie ‘Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi’. Well, a filmi end to a filmi affair. What more to say than “Fare well in future” as Sravya Rao puts it.

When asked about the fashion arena of people, nearly 70% of the teens would use their medulla oblongata for thinking about the actresses and models who are rated as top 10 hottest and sexiest females as per the international countdown… We are in the twenty first century – a time where people are most concerned about what Mallika Sherawat , Udita Goswami or John Abraham would be wearing (or would be doing….whatsoever ) in their next film..

A Beautiful Rangoli At The Entrance Credits: Engel Tatiana

As the youngsters of India are forgetting their roots of Indian tradition…the MBA department of Aurora’s Technological and Research Institute organized “ETHNIC DAY” in the campus on 13th March this year. The event named as SAMSKRUTI 2010, was conducted as a commemoration of the “forgotten Indian ethnicity”.

The event was announced three days before the actual ‘Red Letter Day’… Guys were casual about this as usual but girls!!! Whoa… all of them got very busy for those three days as though they had to prepare for their GATE exam. The entire lady lot of ATRI seemed to have spread to Koti for buying jewelry sets for their sarees and those of who had them already, bought themselves a matching set of bangles… Well 13th March happened to be a Saturday and so Friday afternoon became an undeclared holiday for most of the uninterested college going buddies.

Finally the ‘D’ day arrived. It was yet another wonderful morning with unusual routine to be followed when the white and blue dress code of ATRI got transformed into dhotis, kurta- pajamas and colorful sarees, half-sarees and ghaagras… It was a very pleasing sight for all the ATRI’ans as the two white buildings of CSE/IT and ECE/EEE were fuming with different shades of chromaticity. But yeah, there were some who wore jeans in spite of the notice circulated in all the classes. They buzzed in just to see their dhoti wearing friends breaking their necks to keep the three meter cloth intact with their bodies. And yes, there were girls too who struggled to walk, almost taking baby steps, with the six meters heavy worked sarees resting on their delicate waistline. What a day for the charged guys!

Tradition- Our Nation's Pride Credits: Anoop Teja

“It was SAMSKRUTI, I the day on which we were supposed to represent our culture through our attire. I dressed myself in a traditional KURTA-PYJAMA n started off to college with great enthusiasm. At the college I was glad to see all my fellow mates dressed in their respective traditional attire. It looked like a garden was blossoming with thousand colorful flowers. A great sight to watch! Then the first lecture of the day started. When looking out through the door, my eyes fixed upon three Angels who were dressed in sarees and to my surprise they were my classmates. Then I told myself that it was one of the greatest sights I had ever seen. It was the same college with same students, but what made it special was SAMSKRUTI… It was one of d most memorable days I would like to cherish…” expresses Akram Khaleem.

The event began with two ladies from the MBA department carrying “bonaal” to welcome our Director, Dr Prabhu G. Benakop. To everyone’s astonishment, he was brought in to the venue (CSE/IT block) on a bullock cart. Enlightening the students with the forgotten customs of India marked the first priority for the anchors. Then was an elegantly performed Kuchipudi dance, followed by folk songs of Andhra Pradesh, thereby giving SAMSKRUTI 2010 a mighty start. “A nation with vibrant colors was witnessed at ATRI. It was like a Vedic pathashala with the traditional clothing. I could really feel the aesthetic values of different ethnic groups. We are proud that we represented the nation’s culture.” says S. Aplava Karthik.

The anxiety of people trying to stand out was soon overcome as they got a chance where they could grab people’s attention…i.e. a traditional contest for the title of “Mr. and Miss. Ethnic “was conducted wherein the battlers had to go through different rounds (similar to those of Miss. India and Mr. India…except the part where you have to show your skin).

Kerela's Moiniattam dance Credits: Engel Tatiana

Many fun-going events were conducted for the lecturers out of which archery proved to be too likable. To add up to the charm of the ethnicity contest, there was a profusion of ennobling tradition-a tribal dance was staged and a famous dance of Kerela with its unique elegance called Moiniattam was performed. The day was ended by crowning Mr. and Miss Ethnic. Remarkably both the winners happened to be from the ECE department which added fuel to the fire of each and every guy from ECE.

SAMSKRUTI ’10 endured a great impact on all the family members of ATRI as it not only bewitched everyone but also added flavor to the tastiest dish ever- OUR TRADITION. God bless India and its heritage.

A fest is always the most awaited event in all the colleges. It is a place where students from different colleges and courses come together to compete with each other, share their experiences, present their backyard science experiments to a huge audience, get to know new things and learn a lot. In a similar fashion, Nalla Malla Reddy Engineering College situated in Divya Nagar, Ghatkesar Mandal, organized a two-day Technical Fest on March 26th and 27th.

Unlike other college fests, the fest at NMR had around four individual fests organized by different departments from the college with their own names and unique events under each fest. Dr. D.N.Reddy, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor of JNTU (Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University), Hyderabad was the Chief Guest and Nalla Malla Reddy, Hon’ble secretary, Nalla Malla Reddy Educational Society started off with the inaugural address. He said, “The united we are, the stronger it reflects in our celebrations.” Then there was a message from the Chief Guest after which, he initiated the Tech Fest and from there on, four different fests began to enthrall a large number of students who have visited the college to participate in various events.

Sambhavaat '10. Credits : Nocturnal Czar

The fests held at Tech Fest were Sambhavaat (Mechanical Engineering Department), Yatna (Electrical Engineering Department), Medha’s (CSE-IT; MCA Department), Cihan (Electronics Engineering Dept). All these fests were unique in functioning and the only thing that they had in common was the campus. The Tech Fest got a huge response as students from various departments from other colleges were pouring into the campus and it was full of young technocrats moving about. It was a delight to watch all the events take off simultaneously and have a healthy atmosphere. All were busy in their respective events, a few conducting and the others participating.

SAMBHAVAAT ’10, the fest conducted by the Department of Mechanical Engineering, had a few unique events to be noted. They conducted a workshop on amateur Aero-modeling which would teach beginners on how to make a radio controlled glider and later fly it by themselves. “Wow, I can fly something I made and can control it easily with the remote in my hand.. The workshop was very useful for all of us,” said Swathi Reddy, a first year Mechanical Engineering student of the college. The other catchy event from this dept was “CREA” Assembly. This was an assembly of an IC engine. Participants had to perform the operation in a stipulated time limit and who did it faster, won. “It was good to see many students take up the challenges put up and compete with one other,” said T.Mohan Das, Head of Department, Mechanical Engineering.

YATNA ’10 was a fest conducted by the Department of Electrical Engineering. It was very well organized and planned right from the start. All the third year engineering students were the organizers and they got a hold of good sponsors who encouraged talent and were willing to the best to encourage. YATNA had many attractive robotic competitions apart from the paper and poster presentations. “The track on which my bot had to travel was very tricky and I had to focus to stick till the very end,” said one of the participants of the Robotics Event. They also conducted a number of fun events which included treasure hunt. They kept the participants busy and gave them room for relaxation with these events. “We did have a very good time.. Though we came here for just a paper presentation, we did take part in a lots of other events and it was so well-organized, that none of the events clashed!” said P Deepthi, a 2nd year Instrumentation Engineering student from Bhoj Reddy College of Engineering.

Seminar credits : Nocturnal Czar

MEDHA’s ‘10 was a joint event of the CSE IT and MCA deparments. They had presentations and seminars based on latest technological advancements on their fields. They had all the technology related events like advancements and application of various projects. They conducted LAN-gaming, which was the star attraction of the fest. Students were pouring in from all streams of engineering to wage wars in the gaming world and see test their skill, “In gaming you have to be very serious.. one can’t afford to take chances and it’s the survival of the fittest,” said D. Chaitanya, a third year CSE student of NMR College, who was also the organizer of gaming.

CIHAN’10 was conducted by the Electronics Engineering Department. They had a very good number of events like paper and poster presentation, project exhibition, live models, etc. In project exhibition and live model presentation, a student had to show his working model of the project and explain it on the basis of details like the usage and applications. “By presenting my model and after interacting with the judges and answering their queries I could get some new ideas which I will use to implement the next time,” said Raja Nihanth Reddy, studying 3rd year Electronics Engineering at Aurora Technological and Research Institute.

Robotics Event. Credits : Nocturnal czar

All the fests were running parallel to each other. They had their own set of participants and visitors and NMREC was the only venue for all the events. There were no problems of inconvenience for any participant as it was well planned and handled. It was unlimited fun at every camp and who ever found the one more interesting spent a lot of time there, at the end of the day gaining knowledge is what one looks into at a fest. “It was great to be here and we learnt a lot and spent very good time for two days,” quoted a visitor, Viraj Reddy, studying final year Electronics Engineering at CVR College of Engineering. Waiting for the next TECH FEST when all these four departments will be gearing up to set new challenges, and encourage everyone to perform much better. Another long year to go and this will happen in a much better way and will for sure go beyond the expectations of all.

All The Best!

A few tears, a few smiles, some tight hugs, some photographs, some sad goodbyes and promises to stay friends forever… these are the essential ingredients of the perfect college Farewell. The college Farewell is an event of tremendous significance in the lives of all youngsters as it marks the end of their carefree and bindaas college life and the beginning of their first stint in the competitive professional world out there. As this academic year approaches its conclusion, most colleges in the city are busy preparing to bid adieu to the seniors in style. It is the same in St. Francis College, Begumpet, which was buzzing with activity as it geared up for the Farewell, which was held on 13th March.

The Farewell frenzy has spread like wildfire among the students, especially the seniors, most of whom can’t stop gushing about how they are going to look in saris. “I’m really excited for the Farewell. Everywhere in college, it is the only topic of discussion. Everyone is asking the same question to each other, ‘Which color sari will you be wearing?’. I’m really looking forward to it.” said Harika Jain, a final year B.A. student. Malise Paul, another senior said, “I’m really excited about wearing a sari. However, I’m also a little sad that college is over. I’ll miss all my friends and lecturers.” Some students have also made plans to party after the programme. Neha Singh, a 3rd year Mass Communication student said, “My friends and me have pooled in money and we are going to go to 10D after the programme. We’ll dance and have lots of fun!” She further added, “We are really excited about dressing up in saris. Yesterday we went shopping and bought heavy and expensive saris exclusively for the Farewell. Later, we’ll be going to buy matching accessories.”

The juniors have come up with a short programme for their beloved seniors which includes 2 group dances, one by B.Sc students and the other by B.Com students. The former has a fusion theme whereas the latter’s theme is a girl’s journey from school to college. Dona Ghosh, a 2nd year B.Sc student and one of the dancers in the first dance said, “We started practicing on 3rd march and are really excited to perform. We will be dancing on a medley of Desi girl, Twist, Taal, Uff teri ada and Zoobi doobi. We are trying to create a fusion between Indian and Western.” Surabhi Bhandari, a B.Com student and one of the dancers of the other group said, “We are going to depict the various stages of a girl’s life from childhood till the college farewell. The songs that we have chosen are ABCD….., Chak dhoom dhoom, Paathshaala, Aaj main upar, Khud ko kya samajhti hai, 10 on 10, Remix, Main tera dhadkan teri, Hai junoon and Jaane nahi denge tujhe. We are really looking forward to performing for our seniors.”

Taal se Taal mila! Credit:Mystical Vigilante

The programme also includes the prestigious ‘Miss Francis’ contest, which is like a beauty pageant for the outgoing students, but with a francisian twist. Over the years, this contest has gained immense popularity and the number of girls vying for the coveted crown have greatly increased. Aditi Rao, a 2nd year B.Sc student and one of the members of the Miss Francis organizing committee said, “We are working really hard to ensure that this year the contest sets the bar at a great height for the ensuing year. There were many entries this time, so we conducted a preliminary round which was a written test with personality based questions and picked out the final 15 who will compete on the day of the event. The upcoming rounds are Introduction and Talent, a quiz to test their know how about St. Francis & finally, judges’ question.” She further added, “We arranged for sashes and crowns for the winners. The crowns are really pretty. I’m going to compere the event for the 1st time. I’m really excited about it.”

The Miss Francis contest has become a thing of tremendous importance and honor to the participants. Sheetal Iyer, one of the finalists this year said, “The whole idea of Miss Francis creates excitement. It is a privilege to bear that title. Even being a part of the contest is an honor. Being one of the finalists shows that we have carved a niche for ourselves in college over the years.” Disha Pancholi, another finalist said, “I won the Miss Fresher 1st runner up title in my 1st year, it was then that I decided that I want to be Miss Francis. I am very attached to St. Francis. So, when I saw my name on the list of finalists it was like a dream come true. If I win, I will be deeply touched.”

However, not everyone is going gaga over the Farewell. Sunaina Bhagwandas, a B.A. final year student said, “After 3 years of being in the same place, I’m so tired that I can’t wait to get out of here. I’m not really looking forward to the Farewell. Mostly I won’t come on that day.”

Love it or Hate it, but the Farewell at St. Francis has surely got all of its students talking about it and they definitely had one hell of a time preparing for it!

The month of March at Sultan-ul-Uloom College of Pharmacy (SUCP) brings along with it an increase in the work load on the budding pharmacists. From the demoralizing Internal examinations to the increasing amount of practical record work, the problems are aplenty. But as the famous English idiom says, ‘Every Dark cloud has a silver lining‘, the silver lining for the SUCPians comes in the form of the Annual Sports cum Cultural week organised by the faculty and the final year students. The annual event is highly competitive and entertaining which fills the chasm created by the absence of a full fledged fest at the college. The year 2010 too witnessed a spectacular sports week which concluded with the Annual Day organized on the 29th of March.

Day 1 of the sports week comprised of the Badminton event for both boys and girls, Chess and Carrom board game for the boys followed by the Throw ball event for the girls. The sports complex had a completely different look from its usual haunted appearance. The small badminton court was surrounded on all sides by cheering girls, lifting the spirits of their friends toiling away on the court. While the girls were having their share of fun, the boys were concentrating on their various moves and shots on their respective board games. Syed Ali Hussain Abedi, a second year student expressed remorse on missing the sports week in his first year due to illness. He said, ” Participation in the events brings out the best in everybody.” He further added, “Finishing runner up in the Carrom board competition was definitely satisfying.” Chess, always the game of kings yet, played by all, was another sport that attracted loads of participation.

Chess competition. Credits :: Stupendous Calvin

Day 2 began with the game of table tennis, which showcased the deft stroke play of the participants. Students from all the years participated extensively in this event which had its fair share of upsets with many fancied seniors biting the dust due to some fabulous work by the juniors. Raza Hyder, one of the junior students emerged victorious at the end of the competition which took around 3 hours to complete. The focus was then shifted to the grounds where the Volley ball event was conducted. At the end of the day, the bruised elbows and the grazed knees were the souvenirs of a competition well fought for. While the boys were sweating it out on the grounds, the girls continued their tryst with the indoor games such as Chess, Carrom board and Table Tennis. Tennikoit was organized specially for the girls on the second day of the sports week.

The entire third day of the sports week was dedicated to Cricket. With a total of eight teams participating in the competition, it took the whole day for the triumphant team to be decided. As always, the cricket competition had its share of controversies and altercations between the competing students which usually happens due to the emotional attachment to the game of Cricket. But the situations were brought into control by the supervising in-charges at the ground. The First year team rose beyond all expectations and finished on the top. The semifinal match between the teams from second and third year was a thrilling encounter with the third year students winning the match after a SUPER over (the match ended in a TIE). All sporting events done and dusted, the attention was then shifted to the cultural part of the week.

<img class="size-medium wp-image-10909" title="SUCP SPORTS WEEK 2010 03" src="http://www.vidyouth.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/SUCP-SPORTS-WEEK-2010-03-300x225.jpg" alt="DEBATE competition.
The cultural events were held in the well equipped seminar hall of SUCP. The seminar hall with its established sound facility and seating arrangements has served as a platform for hundreds of SUCPians to develop their abilities . Day 4 started with the Mehendi designing competition for the girls, which was a new addition this year. The girls appreciated the efforts of the seniors in conducting the competition by participating in large numbers. The next event that followed was the Elocution competition. The students where asked to voice their opinion on the topic of ”Global Warming”. The long drawn speeches were highly appreciated by both the students and faculty members alike. JUST A MINUTE session or JAM as everyone calls it was the next event. Noura Anees, a dynamic second year student feels, “JAM session is one of the most entertaining parts of the sports week.” She continues, “To see even the smartest of the students stammering in front of a vociferous crowd is extremely funny. I feel it takes a lot of courage to take the stage even for a minute”. The JAM session was highly charged up and choosing a worthy winner was an arduous task for the judges.

The next day was a team affair with competitions such as Quiz, Dumb charades and Debate. The topics for Debate were extremely interesting and the participating teams were cheered on throughout the competition. The Essay writing competition in the morning had the volatile topic of Global Recession to discuss. A team of 3 students each was required for the Quiz, Debate etc. This lead to the exhibition of qualities such as Team spirit and the ability to win as a group.

Badminton court. Credits:: Stupendous Calvin

The final day of the week was the most sought after for all the students with events such as singing and the highly anticipated skit part. The singing competition involved some accomplished singers and also those who where there to entertain the audience. The faculty members had their share of fun through the various participants and they didn’t back away from appreciating the contestants. The Skit event is probably the most anticipated of the lot. The various costumes, the funny topics, the moral messages and some uninhibited acting by the students makes this event a definite ‘Hit’ among the audience. The various roles played by the actors were worthy to be remembered for a long time. “Sports week is that time of the year when all the students come together and participate in a friendly environment.” asserts Masroor Nishath, a charismatic third year student. She reminisces all the wonderful memories during her three years at SUCP and expresses gloom at the thought of having just one year left for her graduation.

As all good things come to an end, the sports week ended with the Annual day held on the 29th of march. The function was attended by dignitaries such as Mr Zafar Javeed, the chairman of Sultan ul uloom Education Society, Mr Roop Lal Shah, the Advisor of the society and other respected members of the society. The awards ceremony was postponed due to the ensuing communal tension in the various parts of the city. The dinner after the function was another delectable experience for everyone.

Knute Rockne, a retired American football player once said, “One man practicing sportsmanship is far better than hundred teaching it.” This quote definitely lays impetus on sportsmanship and its practice, and the students at SUCP can easily boast of a platform on which they can practice sportsmanship.

SUCP SPORTS/CULTURAL WEEK 2010 unquestionably preached sportsmanship.

The phrase ‘red-letter day’ dates back to 1549. It means an important or a memorable day. St. Francis College for Women celebrated its Annual College Day and Farewell on Saturday, March 13, 2010. It was a special day for the faculty and the student body, for it appreciated the efforts put in by everyone in the bygone year and marked the successful completion of yet another batch of young and bright students.

The much-awaited programme began with a lovely prayer song by the nightingales of the college. They invoked the Muse of St. Francis of Assisi to grant serenity and grace in their natures, wisdom and courage as their shields during adversities and to ensure that the beacon of love and empathy for fellow beings in their hearts remains forever shining. Attired in purple robes, laced with gold, the members of the choir lent their voices in true spirit of love and humanity. The Lamp Lighting Ceremony served as the auspicious beginning to the show. The Principal, Dr. Sr. Alphonsa Vattoly was then called upon the stage to address the gathering and inspire the students with her encouraging words. She said, “My beloved students, you are at the threshold of a new phase in your lives as you leave this great academic institution. I welcome you to the event with the prayer song. I wish that you may blossom and prosper with the divine guidance illuminating your lives forever.”

<img class="size-medium wp-image-10640" title="Red-Letter Day at St. Francis 02" src="http://www.vidyouth.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/Red-Letter-Day-at-St.-Francis-02-300x190.jpg" alt="The Celebrated Choir.
Appreciation of meritorious students in academic and extra-curricular activities is imperative so as to motivate them to work harder and achieve their most cherished goals. The Prize Distribution was thus next on the agenda. Gold Medals, Certificates and Awards were given away for Proficiency, Scholastic achievements in individual subjects, Scholarships and excellence in sports, community awards for services to NCC (National Cadet Corps)/NSS (National Social Service), et al. It was indeed a pleasure to see the audience cheer the deserving students. On this occasion, numerous shields and awards were also given to the faculty and administration in acknowledgment to their loyalty and services. “I own this prize, but truly I owe it to God, my family and my lecturers”, remarks Aarthi Rajendran from B.A IIB, a recipient of the Silver Medal for Proficiency.

The Prize Distribution Ceremony having successfully ended, gave way to the equally anticipated second half of the programme for the day – Farewell to the outgoing batch. The Farewell Party is a formal event of every educational institution in which the senior-most batch is bid adieu after having completed their term of study. It is a nostalgic occasion, evoking bitter-sweet emotions amidst tears and smiles and bringing back happy as well as sad memories. “As goes the saying, ‘what you have is not as important as what you become, it is my prayer and sincere wish that the quality education that has been offered to you in this college has helped you become better individuals and empathetic to others. Wish you all the Best”, observed the Principal, Dr. Sr. Alphonsa Vattoly.

“The Farewell was a great experience. We bonded with the entire class and also with the teachers”, shares Esha Kedia, a final year student of B.Com Professionals. “These three years have shown me my true self, exposed hidden facets of my personality and made me my true being. All possible opportunities are given here to make a person a better human being. From vital values to pride, from strict rules to lovely Principal, from simplicity to latest trends, from knowledgeable teachers to freaky friends, from open-gate system to 75% attendance, from regular classes to superb canteen, this college has it all. What more can a student ask for?”, gushes a nostalgic Disha Pancholi, a final year student of the college. “Everything has to come to an end and so will these pages of my life. I wish I had got an opportunity of never turning these pages. But life has to move on and so I will walk proudly out of St. Francis, with it as my shadow, with the values given by it as my wings, to break through the skies and go beyond rainbows”, she adds.

The Miss Francis Contest was the eagerly awaited segment, in which, fifteen accomplished final year Francisians, selected by staff and student advisors, participated on a common platform, displaying their expertise in respective fields for the much-coveted title of ‘Miss Francis’. The Contest was no less than a renowned beauty pageant. Dressed in ethnic traditional wear, the Farewell hallmark, glamorized saris, authentic jewellery and fashionable footwear, the contestants walked with panache, answered questions with poise and performed with élan. The ‘Show Your Talent’ round was a complete entertainer with someone playing the piano, another dancing on a popular Bollywood song, someone rendering the soulful rendition of another popular number, something out-of-the-box like displaying clothes designed by them and radio-jockeying. This was a reflection of the widespread talent present in abundance in today’s youth.

“I think the contest was amazing, a great experience for them as well as for me. I was surprised to see the amount of confidence that they portrayed while speaking, dancing, singing or walking. And I’ve surely taken good tips from them. It was fun watching too!”, exclaims Divjyot Chawla, from B.Com Professionals.

<img class="size-medium wp-image-10646" title="Red-Letter Day at St. Francis 07" src="http://www.vidyouth.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/Red-Letter-Day-at-St.-Francis-07-300x192.jpg" alt="The Miss Francis Contest.
In the next round, the contestants were asked mind-boggling questions about their Alma Mater. “My friends and I usually put up a dance performance for any programme in college and we were expected to do the same this time too. However, we chose to organize the prestigious Miss Francis Contest as we knew we wouldn’t get this opportunity again. We thought of whacky and interesting questions to make it ‘hatke’ and the round became a big hit. We asked questions about college and not many knew the right answers in spite of spending three years here!”, says Jui Mukherjee, a second year student of Mass Communication. “Over the last two years, I’ve made some really good friends among the seniors and I’m going to miss them”, she adds.

The results of the Contest were announced to the jubilant cheers of the audience. Sneha Kothari from B.Com was the proud owner of the Miss Francis title. She was also given the title of ‘Miss Talented’. Isha Anjali Chandra from B.A Psychology was the First Runner-up along with the titles of ‘Miss Best Dressed’ and ‘Miss Bindaas’. Sheetal Iyer from B.A Mass Communication was the Second Runner-up as well as holder of the ‘Miss Popular’ title.

'Show Your Talent'. Credits : Pens Eve

It was then time for the seniors to sit back, relax and enjoy the afternoon with their friends. The celebrated choir presented a medley of songs appropriate for the occasion and the second year students of B.Com and B.Sc performed dances. “I’m obviously filled with a certain amount of sadness. It isn’t easy to leave familiar and well-loved people and places. However, Farewell also brings with it a great deal of excitement about what lies ahead”, says Swathi Kandru, a final year B.A Psychology student.

The programme ended on a solemn note as the words of the Principal remained upper-most on every student’s mind, “Life is precious. God gives us just one life to live and we must make it beautiful.”

Here’s wishing a warm farewell, good luck and sincere wishes to the outgoing batches of this academic year!

Cheers to a bright future!

The “Aspirations 2020” is a national level programming contest held at 474 colleges from across the country. It is an initiative taken by Infosys as a part of Corporate Social Responsibility. The title signifies that by 2020, a team from India should positively win a medal at the ACM-ICPC (International Collegiate Programming Contest) which is often referred to as the olympics of software programming. This is an annual multi-tiered computer programming competition among the universities of the world. The contest is sponsored by IBM. In order to encourage students to build up confidence and participate in technical and programming contests like the aforementioned, Infosys had taken this innovative step which helps the whole student community all over India.

This contest had around 27000+ students participating in the online teaser round which was an entry level screening exam. After conducting competitions at various levels such as inter-college, regional, state etc. and screening a large number of students, the finals were held at Hyderabad Infosys Campus, Gachibowli on March 19th, 2010. A total of 14 teams which consisted of 42 members (3 each in a team) participated in the final round. 100 students from 4 other colleges in Hyderabad were invited to witness the finals of this mega event and be present at the moment when the winner of this prestigious contest would be declared.

One of the Participants Being Awarded the Certificate of Participation Credits: Maniac Monster

While the 42 final participants were undergoing the final round of the contest, the students from other colleges were engaged by a host of Infosys employees. Activities such as Non-technical quiz, JAM session, Q and A session were held. An absolutely entertaining and informative quiz was conducted by one Mr. Riyaz Usman from the Hyderabad Infosys Quiz Forum. The quiz consisted of 2 rounds. The first round was a written test which had 25 questions and based on the scores in this test, the top 6 teams were selected and the finals held. All the questions that could not be answered by the finalists were left for the audience and many students from the audience won goodies for themselves by answering questions. The most interesting thing about this quiz was that all the rounds were very innovative and the answer could mostly be deciphered from the question itself. An example of this was a question wherein a visual with two pictures of the periodic table where the element “Sn” was highlighted was shown and the question was to identify the famous cartoon character associated with the visual. For people who know that the element “Sn” – Stannum’s common name is Tin, it was a cakewalk to identify that the cartoon character is Tin Tin because the picture had been repeated twice. It would also interest one to notice that one of the rules of the quiz was to read the question again and again in order to answer it!

After the quiz session, a JAM session was held wherein students were picked at random and asked to speak about random topics. There were really quite a few interesting JAM speeches from many students. Goodies were also given away to some participants whose performance was pretty fair than the others. After the JAM and quiz sessions, lunch was arranged in a very professional style at the dining hall for all the participants at the dining hall.

2:00 PM in the noon after lunch marked a very special moment on this day for all the participants and finalists present at the venue. A webinar (A seminar on web) of the students with Mr.Srikantan Moorthy(popularly known as Tan Moorthy) and Mr. T.V.Mohandas Pai, both vice presidents of the Education and Research module of Infosys, was arranged. Both the legends gave beautiful, encouraging and informative answers to many of the questions posed by students on higher studies and job oppurtunities. At the end, a very motivational speech was also given by Mr. Mohan to encourage students to increase their learnability levels in order to satisfy the needs of the IT and other corporate firms in India.

Finally, at 4:00 PM in the evening, the moment which all the participants of “Aspirations 2020” had been eagerly waiting for, had arrived. The results of “Aspirations 2020” were about to be declared. Ms. Anshul Tiwari, the MC (Manager of Ceremony) announced the winners and runner-ups of the prestigious contest. Cheques bearing Rs. 50,000 and Rs.40,000 each and a Sony Digital Camera was awarded to each of the 3 winners and runners-up respectively.

Should be Students Taking Part in Quiz Credits: Maniac Monster

After the presentations ceremony, all the winners and runners-up had come on to the stage and shared their feeling on how one should learn to focus on concepts rather than marks and grades. This was followed by a Vote of Thanks session by Mr. Sri Nagesh, principal of the Campus Connect initiative.

So to sum it up, Aspirations 2020 is a unique platform introduced by Infosys as part of its Campus Connect initiative to bring the best of engineering talent from across India together to interact, enjoy and learn from each other while winning a few accolades and fame in the bargain. The fact that the finals of this contest had been held at Hyderabad also facilited the interaction of students from different colleges across the city which would otherwise not be possible in the present day.
