G.Narayanamma Institute of Technology & Science (for Women), sponsored by G.Pulla Reddy Charities Trust was established on 15th December 1997. It is affiliated to JNTU, Hyderabad and approved by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). Accredited by NBA (AICTE), GNITS is the first women’s college in AP to obtain ISO 9001:2000 Certification. It offers 4 year, full time B.Tech degree programmes in the branches of CSE, ETM, EEE, ICE, IT and ECE. It also offers three 2-year (full time) M.Tech program in Power Electronics, Electric Drives and many more.

The department of ECE was first started in the year 1997 with an intake of 60 students but later increased to 120 in the year 2002. The management fee is pretty high as compared to the other branches. The fee approx. varies from 9 lakhs to 14 lakhs. The Head of the Department (HOD) , Prof. Ch. Ganapathi Reddy has an experience of 19 years in the field of education. He is tagged with the name “cool” because of his dynamic nature and his wit. ECE has the most experienced professors from various backgrounds such as people who’ve completed their M.Tech from some of the reputed colleges like IITs and IIITs. The labs are well equipped with latest updated technology such as ECA (Electronic Circuit Analysis) lab equipped with the latest MULTISIM software. “The best professor in this department is the HOD himself”, say Manisha, Sahaja. Sushila of 4th year says, “ My branch is said to be the best branch in college, because of the placement record and the future prospects as well”. Another student of 2nd year, Shilpa says, “Opting for this branch has given me an added advantage. We learn even non-ECE subjects, which helps us to explore the computers stream as well”.

<img class="size-medium wp-image-4534" src="http://www.vidyouth.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/seminar-300x225.jpg" alt="Seminar by a student.
A batch of students of 3rd year, Shaurya, Shweta, Priya and Sahiti feel they have made the right decision by joining this college, inspite of it being a “girls’” college. A second year student Manogya says, “The donation for management quota is pretty less when compared to other top colleges. I paid 10 lakhs”. The faculty in this department are the ones, who have a minimum of 3 years experience. Every branch organizes a “so called” IV tour (industrial visit) for the 3rd years to places such as Shimla, Kulu Manali etc, for a period of 10 days as per the syllabi. This is the most memorable tour for every student studying engineering, especially, the bond between the teacher and the student grows even stronger. The major change is the revised syllabus for the present 2nd years. It is focused more on core subjects with an additional subject – English in the 3rd year. When Pranati, Sandhya, Sumedha, a group of 2nd years were asked about their interest to join this college, they had different opinions. Pranati says, “Initially, I was very apprehensive of joining a girls’ college thinking how boring it would be. But now, I am enjoying to the fullest”. A few of them had suggested their juniors not to join this college if they wanted to have fun!

On the trail of an admirable vision, relying on the power of technology; striking for “Leading Edge”, setting standards for excellence yet focused on adding quality to human life; we expand the reach of technology and information through innovation and invention. This is the CSE branch’s quote – a home for inspired minds. The department of CSE bloomed in the year 1998, which is currently headed by Ms. KVN Sunitha. 15 yrs after its inception, the Department of Computer Science & Engineering is taking strides in strengthening its facilities year after year. The department is glared up with latest equipment in tune, adapting latest trends in the field of teaching like computer visual aids.

The Head of the Department, Mrs.Sunitha foresees this branch as a place where intelligence, innovation and insight are given space to thrive. The venerable CYBERSUDS is an informal association of students and faculty of CSE. It was founded in the year 2005 to promote communication over a broad range of computer related issues and topics. CYBERSUDS hosts a series of frequent, special internet group meetings. Several specialists have been invited from the industries to share their experiences. The final year students, Sravani, Sharanya, Preeti, Sandhya cherish their 3 years of college. Sravani recollects, “I never dreamt of joining an exclusive girls college in the first place. Moreover, I hated computers and here I am today, on the verge of completing my Engineering in the very CSE branch itself! The faculty is simply mind blowing. The amount of knowledge, the patience till the output comes, the hardwork for CYBERSUDS is beyond words to describe”. Harini, of 2nd year says, “It was my passion towards computers and the various languages that I wanted to learn that made me choose this branch”. But, a 2nd year student, Anusha feels that the lectures are too boring with 6 to 7 classes a day at a stretch and most of them being theory classes. Also, the INFOSYS training which is mandatory for the 2nd years is another add-on to their woes.

The EEE or the rockers of the college are the ones, who are the total bindaas types. This department was founded in the year 1997. The management quota fee varies from 5.5 lakhs to 9 lakhs being an upcoming branch. The labs are well furnished to cater the needs of the students. They also have a ‘Renewable Energy Club’. The Head of the Department, Dr.K.Ramesh Reddy, a young and dynamic personality with vast teaching experience, having many publications to his credit is the only HOD in the college, who has himself involved in the extra-curricular activities such as ISTE, IEEE etc. He says, “We have the best students especially the present 2nd years, who are simply electrifying”. Pavani, a final year student recalls, “My 3 years at college just flew without my notice. There are countless number of memorable memories. But, one of them is when we went for a tour and we missed our bus!” Her friend, Srujana, another final year student adds, “This happened at Goa.We didn’t know the route, language was a barrier and it was a no-man place. Our faculty missed the count and it was our fault as well to not have boarded at the right time”. Prajanya, a 3rd year student recollects her ragging experience, “I had the dreadful experience. I was asked to enact like a hijda on the main road with my mix and match costume. Since, I was very bold and daring, my guts pushed me to do it. It was more like a prestige issue for me”.

A faculty member, Mr.Vishnu says, “’TEJASS’, the departmental students technical association, provides a platform for the students to exhibit & improve their skills. To boost their technical awareness and instill confidence ‘The Institution of Engineers (India) students chapter’ was started in 2006″. Indeed, whatever branch the students are in, the enjoyment and the freedom they enjoy at college are like precious stones as each moment is precious.

As the exams of 3-2 came to an end, all the third year students of Sridevi Engg College were very much excited about their upcoming tour. All the students of CSE, IT and ECE were being taken to the tour together. The tour was scheduled from 19th of December to 28th of December. The tickets were booked and the complete itinerary was given soon after the exams came to an end. All the students got busy shopping and getting things ready for the tour in time. Places included in the itinerary were Chennai, Athirampally, Thekkady, Munnar, Allepey, Kanya Kumari and Trivandrum.

Just when the students were ready to take off for the tour the principal of the college decided to cancel the tour, the reason being the agitations in the state over the separation issues. As the news of the tour being canceled spread, the spirits of the students went for a toss. It took a great deal of effort for the students to convince the principal not to cancel the tour. Finally when the principal had no more objections with the tour and was fine with it, the hearts of the students were filled with joy again. The tour started on 19th December with a total of 134 students and six faculty members of the college boarding the Charminar Express which left the platform of Nampally station at 6.30pm. The level of fun the girls had in the train increased as time passed. The train arrived on the platforms of Chennai Central on 20th December at 8am. All the students were taken to the Egmore Museum in Chennai, which was found to be the most boring place on the earth!

<img class="size-medium wp-image-7538" src="http://www.vidyouth.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/Periyar-Lake-300x225.jpg" alt="Periyar Lake.
On 20th Dec all students started off to Trichur by the Allepey Express. From Trichur there was a drive to the Athirampally water falls. All the students were allowed to have fun at the water falls for about 2hrs. “Waterfalls were totally amazing! The pressure of the water at some places was really good. We had complete fun pushing our friends into the water”, said Anusha. After spending time at the water falls there was a drive of about 8hrs to Thekakady. On 22nd December students proceeded for the local visit which included Spice Gardens and Periyar Lake. “The visit to Spice Gardens was educative and interesting too”, opined 3rd year student Swapna. After the local visit, students had to again start off for Munnar the same day.

On 23rd December students were taken to the national park in Munnar and then to the Echo point. “Munnar was a real beautiful place! Mornings were very foggy and the temperature was quite low. Munnar was a place full of natural beauty. Felt like spending years enjoying the beauty!” said Aparna. After Munnar national park students proceeded to see the echo point. “There was no good echo at the Echo Point. Wonder how they named it so! Even after yelling like hell no considerate echo was generated”, said Sashi. In the night a camp fire was arranged in an open ground. Very good music provided and all the students were seen shaking a leg for the music.

<img class="size-medium wp-image-7541" src="http://www.vidyouth.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/Munnar-300x225.jpg" alt="Munnar Beauty.
On 24th December, students were taken to Allepey, where they could have a little boating. Then from Allepey students were driven to Kanya Kumari. On 25th December all the students gathered at the beach early in morning expecting to see the sunrise. But unfortunately due to heavy clouds, witnessing sunrise was impossible. Then after breakfast students were taken to the Kanyakaparameshwari temple in Kanya Kumari. After the darshan all the girls went for shopping at the nearby shops. Then they had a drive to Trivandrum. On 26th December, students visited the Padmanabhaswamy temple in Trivandrum in the early hours of the morning. Visit to the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre which was scheduled in the afternoon cancelled due to the lack of acknowledgment from the research centre to the college managment. After lunch every body had to board the train to Chennai. On 27th Dec all the students reached Chennai at 10am. After lunch all the students were taken to the Spencers mall in Chennai for pure shopping. A complete 2hrs of shopping on the last day of the tour gave immense happiness to all the girls. After shopping till their purses were nearly empty every body got on to the Charminar Express to get back to Hyderabad.

Kanya Kumari. Credits: Kryptic Mind

27th of December, the last day of tour was the day when every body enjoyed to their maximum levels. No one slept on the night of 27th. The 8 day tour finally ended when the train arrived the platforms of Nampally station on 28th morning. The big smile every body had on their faces as they bid bye to their friends said that the memories of the tour were something they would carry all through their lives.

“It wouldn’t be wrong if I say that, the year 1978 is when it all started at Loyola Academy,” says Prakash. Wondering what he’s talking about? Well, it was in 1978 that the first ever course was started in Loyola Academy, in the form of Computer Science and Engineering. It is a three-year degree course and is affiliated to Osmania University. In the year 1990, it was brought under grant-in-aid. This course, at Loyola Academy, is characterized by a lot of special features and thus, marks the beginning of a new age approach to technically inclined side of education. The aim of the department has always been to groom youngsters into competitive professionals and produce a balanced mix of both manpower and skill. (Picture – The Computer Science Block. Credit: Inverted Frequency)

The Selection process is based on a written exam in subjects –maths, physics and chemistry, followed by a personal interview. “Both the exam and the interview was based on what we learnt in our intermediate and hence, I found it easy. I’m sure all those who got selected had a similar feeling,” says Praveen. After conducting such preliminary tests, the management at Loyola, looked to improve the subject knowledge of the students in areas which they are already familiar with. Along with basic subjects like Maths, Physics and Chemistry, the curriculum also includes theory subjects like Data Structures Through ‘C’, C++ and Numerical Methods, Data Communications, Operating Systems, JAVA Programming, Internet Protocol and DBMS and a few more. With a plethora of Theory papers, this stream also offers a lot of practical subjects like Advanced JAVA lab, COBOL, UNIX, Engineering Drawing, Data Structure Lab to name a few. Giving a lot of importance to Practical teaching opened the gates for the requirement of adequate infrastructure facilities. Ramakanth says, “I totally love the facilities here at Loyola. Be it the computer labs, EDC labs, Microprocessor labs or the kind of latest softwares that are fed into the available computers, it’s very authentic and helps us with our subjects. Unlike a lot of other colleges, we don’t face the problems of outdated softwares and systems. We even have internet labs for quick access to any required information.”

A very interesting practical paper. Credit: Inverted Frequency

A good system not just includes providing the students with good facilities but, also good faculty. The teachers and lecturers form the most important part of any institution and decide the fate of the students and the institute as well. At Loyola, the standards achieved, in terms of teaching and imparting valuable knowledge, has always been above the expected levels. Ashwin says “ I think the kind of lecturers and their methods of teaching are improving by the day. With due respect to all my lecturers , I personally feel that the faculty in my second year has gone a step ahead of the faculty in first year, in terms of teaching and subject knowledge. Overall, it has been very satisfactory.”

The most important advantage of a course is its long-term effect or its scope. The question of ‘future prospects’ is always a major criterion for a student to decide his/her under graduation stream. In spite, of being one of the most favorite streams for a very long period, the peril of recession did put a doubt or two in the minds of the students. “Recession surely will affect students of our stream. The batch that passed out this year will surely face the heat and will have to be exceptionally good to gain a job with a satisfactory pay, but then I feel that the economy is beginning to recoup. Our economy seems to be doing better than how it was doing last year and it is a very good sign for us as it marks the return of IT sector that undoubtedly plays the most important role in a country’s economy. I’m just hoping that, when I pass out, I’ll have a lot of options to choose from.” Says an optimistic Vaibhav, a second year student.

Hence, despite the hollow dip in the condition of the IT sector and the consequent unfortunate-but-unavoidable process of retrenchment and laying off, students continue to pick this stream. As batches continue to be flooded with students, it would be interesting to see how the IT sector booms, over the next few years and how it treats young, fresh and qualified graduates.

Computer Science and IT are attractive avenues to many people because of the income potential it can bring! Engineering is the art of applying scientific and mathematical principles, experience, judging the problems and befit to the people from applying common sense. Engineers are problem solvers and the search for faster, better quality, less expensive routes to use the forces and materials of nature to meet tough challenges. The software engineering’s discipline encompasses knowledge, tool and methods for defining software requirements, and performing software design. Mainly Engineering is a bridge between mathematics and the technology which is needed of mankind. Engineering disciplines are dependent on mathematical and based on problem solving.

Chilkur Balaji Institute of Technology is approved by AICTE New Delhi and is affiliated to JNTU. The department of CSE at Chilkur Balaji Institute of Technology was established in 2007 with annual intake of total 60 seats each in the CSE and IT streams. The seats are filled through the EAMCET counseling with the college code CBTV. There is no donation for the above courses and the management seats are filled based upon the management quota fees prescribed by the government.

Mr. Jaya Kumar with an M.tech degree, is the Head of this Department. The Administrative officer, Mr. Raza contributes to the smooth functioning of the college. The Computer Science Department is designed to keep pace with the developments as they take place. The 40 ton capacity fully air-conditioned laboratory has 120 Wipro systems with centralized network round the clock with internet facility. The computer systems are installed with all the required software like Visual Studio, Oracle, Linux catering to the JNTU curriculum. UPS and generators support these labs. The labs are taken care of by the lab incharge Mr. Shaheed Syed.

<img class="size-medium wp-image-4668" src="http://www.vidyouth.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/c-lab31-300x225.jpg" alt="Computer Lab.
Another computer lab, which is still under construction and which probably will be completed in a few days will help in overcoming the problem of insufficiency. The Computer Science department is planning for 280 dual core 2 machines operating at fast speed, all connected in LAN environments for the new lab.

Library is nerve of the institution. It has been strengthened year by year. It contains more than 1500 commendably categorized text books and reference books for the CSE and IT students. Spacious reading rooms are available. IT prescribes about 10 national journals along with the prominent national diaries.

The students are allowed to the lab only if they are in formal dress with their lab observation books up to date. Manjula, 3rd year CSE student opines, “There is no partiality in giving marks in the labs. We get what we deserve unlike other college students, who loose their marks due to various reasons. The lab assistants and in-charges are friendly with us but yeah, they are a little less experienced though”. Tanu, a 2nd year CSE student laments, “Most of the new college are facing the problems of inexperienced and inefficient faculty. It’s good if the freshers get chance to explore their respective fields if they have proper grip on the subject they are handling, our department has good faculty for most of the subjects except for a few”. Pranita adds, “Ours is a new college and the first batch is yet to go out, so it takes time to get the things done, but with the cooperation of the students and management it can be made possible”. Suresh, a 2nd year IT student laments, “I do not like the college management as it is works in sluggish manner, it takes a lot of time to get things done from them be it a scholarship or anything else apart from that”.

Mallika, a student says, “Computer experience can open many doors. Lots of jobs are looking for IT skills, but this is not the same as studying computer science (It is after all science!). It can be a very useful thing to have to fall back on if you have other interests, but its not advisable taking a break from it until you have at least 2-3 years work experience on your CV. Technology moves forward so quickly it’s hard to keep up and if you don’t make use of your degree pretty much straight away, you could risk getting too far behind the crowd in your skill-set”.

A computer lab under construction. Credit: Vigilant Knight

Sujata, a 3rd year CSE student suggests, “They can take this stream with their eyes closed provided they choose the right college, which gives them the proper exposure to come up with their talents and at the same time they should be exploring other fields and the sides of their streams.

Babita says, “However if you find computers fascinating and are interested in more than one aspect and can imagine yourself working with them for most of your life, then you should have no problems with motivation and your only limit will be how much your prepared to put in. CBIT would rather be a good choice to go with”.

While the computing field is one of the fastest growing segments of industry, it is also one of the fastest changing areas technologically. Computing professionals’ education does not stop with the college degree, but continues with seminars, conferences and advanced courses and training. In computer theory and applications, new ideas are developed every day. Success requires an ongoing commitment to learning to maintain knowledge, skills, and career opportunities.

The International Institute of Information Technology, or IIIT for short, is a deemed university which started out in 1998 as an endeavor to promote research in and popularize the field of Information Technology and has gone from being a “just-started” college to being one of the best that AIEEE offers.

Though Electronics and Communication has been introduced in the recent years, CSE remains the flagship course offered by the institute. The Computer Science department offers both the regular 4-year B.Tech course as well the research-oriented integrated dual degree course. The fee structure is pretty reasonable and the tuition fee cum hostel rent for a semester comes to about 50,000 with the mess charges accounting for another 9,000. The administration has a strict no-no policy for any sort of reservation or donation and the students are admitted solely on the basis of their merit. In 2008, the opening and closing ranks for CSE were 162 and 1729, and for CSD, 157 and 2613. This year, however, IIIT has made a change in its admission policy and has decided to enter further rounds of counseling as opposed to its policy of only 1 round of counseling till last year, and so the closing ranks are expected to be lower as compared to previous years.

The faculty believes that IIIT follows the international pattern of teaching and has a “cutting edge curriculum” modeled after stalwarts like MIT, etc. The administration feels that teaching the important subjects early on helps build a good foundation. Most students seem to agree with this. “I used to find it ridiculous that we had so many courses so soon but now I feel we’re ahead of many other colleges and that definitely gives an edge”, said Shantanu when asked for his views on the same.

The faculties’ credentials leave nothing to be desired with most of them being ex-IITians, usually with teaching experience in one of the IITs. Indeed, Prof Rajeev Sangal, the Director, is among the chief proponents of Artificial Intelligence and has world-wide acclaim. Krishnapal, a 3rd year student adds, “the faculty is really good in the sense that they offer practical guidance when you do projects”.

At work in a lab. Credit - Seargent Arbit

If labs are all steaming chemicals and test-tubes to you, then think again, for in IIIT labs, you’ll find nothing but state-of-the-art computers, wired connections for round the clock connectivity and an air conditioned plush environment to help you unclutter your mind. There are several research departments, the more popular ones being CVIT ( Centre for Visual Information Technology), CDE ( Centre for Data Engineering) and LTRC( Language Technology Research Centre ) and when the time comes for the CSD students to take up research, they are absorbed into these departments. A CSE student can also opt for honours in which case he/she is obliged to work on a project in one such department.

This year, two new dual degree courses have been introduced- B.Tech in Computer Science and MS in Computational Natural Science, and B.Tech in Computer Science and MS in Computational Linguistics. Though it’s part of the plan to introduce more research-oriented courses in the institute, the announcement has met with less than favourable response from the students. “As if it wasn’t bad enough asking 17 year-olds to choose whether they wanted to take up CSD, now they are asking them to finalise the field of research as well, when we barely understand those terms ourselves”, says a disgruntled 3rd-year student.

Brickbats and bouquets don’t matter however; figures talk and IIIT- CS has managed to maintain its 100% placement rate even in the year of recession and indeed, was ranked 7th overall by Dataquest in the 2008 ranking.

In the end, IIIT is at par with the best when it comes to quality education and the experts seem to agree.

There was once a time when people never thought they would come up with something like a computer, but today nobody can imagine their lives without computers. The IT industry brought great changes in the lives of many people, mostly Indians. Many of them started setting their goals to become a ‘Software Engineer’. There’s a saying which means, the more one will greed for it, the more one will loose it and thus happened with this industry. Today it’s in a loss due to recession and financial crisis in the world, but has this changed many minds? No!

Though the industry was badly affected due to many problems, most of the Engineering Colleges couldn’t find any change and one among them is Bharat Institute of Engineering and Technology (BIET). In 2006, less than 60 students joined IT, though the limit was 120. In 2008, though the times are bad, the number reached up to 120. This shows how the students still have hope that this industry would come back to its normal position.

Having started in the year 2001, with 5 academic streams namely IT, CSE, EEE, ECE, Mech; BIET has now expanded its academic programmes by introducing Civil, Aeronautical Engineering and Bio-technology. Most of the students get into the college through management by paying 3-4 lakhs for IT and around 4-5 lakhs for CSE and their yearly fees is Rs. 32,700. The donation fee may vary as the days go by, that is the early the seat is bought the more is the donation. This college doesn’t come in the open category as it is a Christian minority college and there are very few students, who get in through counseling. Even these students will have to pay the same college fee.

The well set computer labs. Credit: Priceless Agression

Mr. Shiva Krishna reddy and Mr.Venugopalan are the Head of Departments (HOD) of CSE and IT (respectively). They are very experienced and have been in this field since 40 years. They have worked in many universities like OU, JNTU. The HOD of IT department says, “The kids think that IT is a very easy subject, but it’s their wrong notion. For everything you’ll have to work hard”. The HOD of CSE department taught a subject named Data Communication Systems (DCS) to IT 3rd yearites. The students didn’t like the way he taught them. One among them complained saying, “I never understood what he spoke, he used to just draw the diagrams and leave”. Another student contradicts saying, “I agree sir couldn’t teach properly in the class, but when I went and asked him personally he taught really well. People should understand he’s an old man and should not make fun of him like that”.

“I joined IT even though market was not good then, as it was my personal interest and like this subject very much and I don’t regret about it also”, says a 2nd yr IT student Shweta. But there also few people, who joined this branch out of parents’ pressure and one such student shares, “I really was interested in either Civil or Bio-tech but my parents dint allow me to. The subjects are not that bad nor that good”.

The infrastructure of the college is excellent. The Secretary Sir Mr.Venugopal Reddy has left no stone unturned to make the college look really beautiful. Many parents get impressed by the huge play grounds, well ventilated class rooms, neatly equipped labs, neat and clean bathrooms and join their children in this college. The college is about 80 acres of land with 5 buildings namely Main building for EEE, MECH; New building for IT, CSE, ECE; Octagonal building for Women College; Pharmacy and MBA blocks. Sharon from 2nd yr CSE tells us, “I joined the college just looking at the campus, it really feels like Engineering and the labs are really well maintained”.

Class rooms. Credit: Priceless Aggression

A 4th year student shares about the teaching experiences, “When it comes to teaching, I think it’s a problem in every college so it’s not a big deal. We used to attend classes only for attendance and read by our own from either text books or all in ones. I don’t think it’s any use to put high hopes on good lecturers anywhere”. But when asked, his friend says, “The faculty is not that good. I mean they are okay, little understanding. They don’t simply fail us in the labs until the student is mischievous in class”. When asked about unwanted imposed rules, Rahul from 3rd year quickly reacts, “Unwanted imposed rules? Aaah I think prohibition of cell phones… I mean it’s ridiculous! I know that almost every college has put up this stupid rule, but still we are doing our Engineering not schooling right?”

Overall to conclude with these branches, the faculty is not so good, the infrastructure and labs are good, the management takes good care of the students. But now it’s the students turn to show up their skills and shine in whichever field they opt for.

An inside look of CMEC – IT and CSE Branches. Everyone said IT and CSE are treated like the favorite kids until the recession took its tolls and later they started getting step-son like treatment from everyone the lecturers, the career analyst and of course parents. But surprisingly at CMEC in the time of global recession last year, the college had immense faith in the growth of the branch and raised the intake to 120 than 60 earlier, making a total of 180 for combined CSE and IT. (Picture: College Championship Trophy – CSE. Credits: Nisargh)

Harsha, a final year student has other views regarding recession. He says, “As the saying goes; every dog has its days, so do all the branches in engineering. It is our bad luck to have completed our degree in such tough times, where the same jobs fetch us only half the salaries”.

Agreeing with most of the students, the faculty of the college advise the students either to pursue higher studies especially M.Tech level course or take up jobs to learn the concepts and gain experience.

Felicitation Ceremony for FSW. Credits: Nisargh

The college houses two separate departments for CSE and IT with their respective HODs, who are Mr. A Venkata Ramana for the CSE Department and Mr. A Srinivas Rao for the IT department. As students from the college tell us, both HODs are very cordial to each other and always are seen together walking through the corridors, scolding the students. Students are just too thankful that they don’t teach together. A survey among the students shows that 80% of the students are glad to have their respective HODs but still nearly 20% of them believe that with the obsession these people have for discipline in terms of dressing and attitude of the students is unbearable.

As for the rest of the faculties like all the engineering colleges have, the survey conducted revealed the following results; 75% faculty members are experienced and teach well too, and out of the remaining 25% nearly 15% are experienced but as the students put it, they are not effective enough in their methods to teach them.

Ask the students, why they took IT and CSE as an option in engineering and pat comes the reply from most of them, saying; it was the best branch available at one point of time. Pratima, a student of CSE shares her agony as she says, “Mujhe kya pata tha yeh Satyam wale aisa kaam karenge ! (How would I know that Satyam owners will do such a thing)”. Like most of her classmates believe, it was due to the Satyam issue that the IT market is suffering from recession especially in the context of Indian scenario.

Richard Mathew Stallman at FSW function. Credits: Nisargh

But nonetheless not much has changed and optimists rule the scene as everyone anticipates that in a matter of a year or so the recession would die down and IT – CSE would back emerge as the leading branches for engineering students again.

With the prices of EAMCET regular seats this year going to Rs.32,500/- per year and the seats in the management quota ranging from 3 lakhs rupees to 5 lakhs rupees varying as per colleges are still comparatively inexpensive to the counter parts of ECE and Mechanical.

As for the infrastructure, the figures speaks for themselves as a whooping 98% students believe they have good labs and other facilities, wonder what the remaining 2% had to complain about, no guessing! Few students want the air conditioners in the labs to be put to use. Well, now there is not much to ask for, after all programming is a strenuous task.

Laxman, a 3rd year student told us he would like to change one thing in his college if given a chance, he would want to conduct more seminars and competitions for his branch, though they have Technical group called “Mavericks”, they still wish to carry out more such co-curricular events to prepare themselves to face interviews and get ready for the mean mean world outside.

Gnu Free software. Credit: Nisargh

Most of the passed out students of CMEC, especially IT and CSE have taken up higher studies and are currently pursuing MS, mostly in the United States of America. Surya Kiran, a passed out student of IT has successfully opened his own firm called as VOIS- Voice of Ignited Souls, Tina and Sandeep from CSE have opened a group called FSW- Free Software Organization, which mainly emphasizes on using free softwares, the world famous software freedom activist, Richard Mathew Stallman, President of the Free Software Foundation, had come to inaugurate the function held at CMEC. And many other students have taken up teaching back in their college and are continuing with correspondence in M.Tech courses.

In the end, a piece of advice from the students of CMEC; Only the daring and brave can take up IT or CSE in this time and to make the going easy there is no better place than CMEC.

Murthy Institute of Technology and Sciences produces sixty Computer Science Engineers and sixty Information Technology graduates every year. The students of both these branches – Computer Science Engineering (CSE) and Information Technology (IT) are well known for their active participation in the college activities. The students of these branches are not really bothered about recession but are very confident and optimistic in every aspect. Aditya, a third year CSE student says, “The branch has its own importance because today’s world runs on computers”. Nirmala, another patron from the same branch says, “I am least bothered about the software market etc but as of now, I just love my branch”.

Coming to the fee structure, the convener quota seat for any branch is thirty one thousand rupees (Rs. 31,000/-) and management quota seats vary from four to five lakh rupees (Rs.4,00,000/- to Rs.5,00,000/-). The branch has got special software labs like Unix, Java and Data base management systems etc. The students of the college are not satisfied with the present labs in the department. Bharadwaj, a second year CSE student says, “Labs are okay but they still need to be developed and improvised”.

The faculty in the branch are very well experienced and the faculty provides the best of information to the students. Vinay, the head of Information Technology department (HOD) says, “We are taking all the required measures to satisfy the students with respect to labs and library”. The college library has got different volumes of books related to the department. Deepika, a student of third year IT says, “The only problem with the college library is all text books are authored by foreigners and it is very difficult to understand their slang and methodologies”.

Arun Kumar, the head of Computer Science department (HOD) says, “The best branch in the campus is CSE because the students are not only good at studies but also in sports and cultural related activities”. The second year computer science department is very well known for the sport related activities. The computer science department is also known for classical singers. Gayathri, a third year student is popularly called as ‘Voice of MITS’ and Nischala, a second year CSE student is titled as ‘Murthy Idol’. Shriram, Aditya, Sujeet and Shakeel represented the college at various competitions and brought a special name to the college. The branch is very well known for the helping and encouraging nature. Prithvi, class representative of second year CSE defines CSE as ‘Creating Sensation Everywhere’.

Information Technology department students are the most fun loving guys in the college. The college authorities show special interest towards the Information Technology department.Vinay, the HOD says, “The best faculty in the college is available in this branch. Management is working towards improvising the labs and facilities related to students”. Trinath, a third year IT student says, “I’m happy for being a part of such a brilliant branch because it has a lot of scope for developing and experimenting with the ideas”. Second year ITians are known for their innovative ideas. The branch has given out the best performances at various events in the college related activities. College fest is just incomplete without a performance from the incredible IT.

Sophisticated computers lab at MITS. Credit: Cool Conqueror

Students from Computer Science and Information Technology department played an important role in social activities like blood donation and national social service. The faculty of these departments are very interactive and friendly with the student community. Faculty of the branch are taking special care in guiding the fourth year students in choosing projects. The college management is inviting professionals from various fields to help the students in all aspects. The students of information technology department created various websites for the promotion of college related activities .The students of the department participated in various fests and symposiums and bagged prizes for the college. The college library has various books and volumes of books are available for the department. Information technology students have conducted various sport and cultural activities in the college and could reach the expectations.

The present scenario of software market doesn’t have a lasting effect on the students of MITS. This shows the amount of confidence the MITSians have got. On the whole the branches can be awarded a good seven and half on a scale of ten.

Ever imagined the world with no language to speak? And the only way to communicate being signals 0 and 1? This is the world of the software engineers. A world of logical statements and loops. The master intellect for all the evolved and emerging technologies from the past to the present and future is accredited to the departments of Information Technology and Computer Sciences. Most of the students, who prefer for these subjects as their career mainly prefer it because of their easiness. ‘If one is not a person of numbers then one should prefer computers’ is a myth made up in many minds. But one thing that has to be kept in mind to take up these branches is that a person must have an inclination towards logical analysis and should always stay updated.

A survey among the students and faculty of SVIT is scripted down. What should we possess? What are the prerequisites that we have to look after before taking these branches? Why the students at SVIT chose this college? Why these two branches, was queried and traced out. The first and foremost thing about what we have to possess before taking the department of Information Technology and Computer Sciences is a liking for the logic. In the present scenario as there is no boom for the IT and CSE branches many students and their parents prefer for other branches. For those, who are already in these branches proclaim the recession even as a thing of joy. As the loopholes always exist there are people, who still blame the markets and the global up-downs.

The annual intake into CSE and IT departments is 120 students. These seats are filled through EAMCET counseling. And the lateral entries are filled in the second year. The management takes special care towards these branches. The ranks range up to 35,000 in CSE and 45,000 in IT. The counseling seat fee depends on the JNTU rules and regulations. The management seat fee varies from one branch to another. It is up till 6 lakhs for IT and up to 7 lakhs for CSE. The departments also offer fee waiver to the poor and needy students to the extent of 10% of the intake under fee waiver scheme of AICTE – Government of AP. The average pass percentage of the students in CSE is over 80% and IT is 75%, subject wise. Students from CSE have been placed in companies like Infosys, IBM, Wipro, Satyam and Sierra Atlantic etc. On an average 25% of the students go abroad to pursue their higher studies. And the first batch of IT is yet to come out. And from 60 of the fourth years around 30% are planning for further studies.

“A student, who would like to get into the IT and CSE departments basically should have minimum knowledge about computers and a pursuit towards staying updated about the various evolved and emerging technologies. This will let them know how they can proceed with the future and which direction they would be interested to make progress in”, said Karthik. The CSE and IT departments are treated as the major branches of SVIT. They are claimed as the splendid branches and special tutelage is taken for the students of IT and CSE. The CSE department is headed by Mr. Anil Chowdary garu and IT department by Mr. Satyanarayan Sharma garu. Both well known for their strictness and disciplinary nature.

The CSE and IT departments both were headed by Mr. Anil Chowdary garu till last year. “The IT students got a new HOD this year. Previously both the branches had the same HOD, which is against the rules of AICTE. The reason being that IT has started just 2 years back i.e., the college is established in 2004 and the IT department started in 2006. The first IT batch will be out this year”, said Manognya. “The IT- CSE students are very talented. They are both bookish and naughty. They win almost all the events conducted in the college. There are students into every field from these two branches”, said a faculty. The ‘07 Mr. and Ms. Fresher and ‘08 Ms. Fresher are from IT, CSE department.

The labs are well furnished and the lab faculty take personal interest in the students. “One fine thing that my college is different from many other colleges is the faculty, who teach us the subject even look after the labs. That makes both the faculty and the students to know each other well and even the students can interact with the faculty full fledged”, coined Priya. On the whole there are 7 labs under the IT-CSE department. All the systems are provided with the required software. “We have few good lab faculty presently. Until last semester I had to almost maskafy my lab faculty for my lab internal marks and they were not even helping us with the programs. Now things changed. They give us the software if we want”, said a student.

Computer Lab. Credit: Morle 'La Wheermy

The CSE HOD is better known for his disciplinary act and he doesn’t bear with any discrepancies in the college by the students of his department. He takes the classes of almost all the years and its based on the time table sketched. “We were taught C language in first year by our HOD and we never had any problems with the way he taught us. He teaches everything in an appropriate pattern”, rants Krishna. The IT department HOD is new to the branch but is well known to students for his witty jibes. “He is a man of logic. One always has to think twice before speaking out something, before him”, said Nikitha. The best part of the IT department is that the IT HOD has got both industrial and teaching experienced faculty for the students of his branch. “Majority of the faculty members, who are presently teaching this branch have above 10 years of experience. Few are new but still have a power and control on what they are teaching. At times there is a problem with the language that the faculty use but still they are not that big that we can’t tackle”, says Ikya (name changed).

The department has well equipped labs with Internet, Scanning and Printing facilities. All the department labs are connected through LAN (Local Area Network). The state-of-the-art computer network has 30 nodes (Pentium IV) with star topology. It has an Ethernet network with Windows 2000 and Windows ‘98 as the operating systems. The other facilities include a wide access to a range of databases, word processors and latest graphic packages. The library has around 1529 books 345 titles for CSE and 1530 books of 325 titles for IT. “Contribution of papers to national and international seminars and attending of QIPS by the faculty reflect their zeal for intellectual growth”, says the management. For further more details visit http://www.svit.ac.in/

The college is both mixture of positives and negatives. Not so popular but not a low rated college too. “Everywhere the students will have problems with the management and vice versa. No college can constantly be ally to the students. The students do dolt things. Both have to go hand in hand. Albeit the management in the college looks and tries to maintain a sternness towards students it still looses at times. ‘Rome was not built in a day’ – SVIT is presently not the best but with the same pace of success it will reach the best colleges list in less than 6-7 years down the lane”, averred Prashanti. For those, who have innovation to do something in software field SVIT is a real good center for learning. IT and CSE rockzzz!

The new age of technology has created a tremendous demand for engineers and most employers are recruiting engineering graduates. Although it is a bad phase for this branch right now, it still is the most popular choice among most students.

CVSR College of Engineering is approved by AICTE, New Delhi and is affiliated to JNTU, Hyderabad. A course in Computer Science and Engineering offers multitude of opportunities for careers in industry or for higher learning, beyond introducing the students to one of the most rapidly evolving technologies in the world. The computer software engineers must keep up with new developments and master new skills. The students of CSE should create combined knowledge of engineering, mathematics, and computer science to analyze the systems and develop applications toward innovation and improvement.

Mr. G. Vishnu Murthy, (Assoc. Professor), is the Head of the Dept., CSE . He has 13 years of total experience, 1 year in industry and 12 years in teaching. He did his B.Tech, M. Tech and pursuing Ph.D. in JNTU. He has organized and attended various workshops and conferences at National level. He is instrumental in setting of the Infrastructure and also streamlining academic activities in the dept. He has been the resource person for Institute of Electronic Governance and Birlasoft programmes . He is the life member of ISTE and Member of IEEE computer society and CSI. He has guided more than 20 projects at PG level and more than 80 projects at graduation level.

CVSR! (We are halfway through into looking that way). Credit : Mr. Srinivas

He is the beacon light for faculty and encourages the students and faculty to participate in various conferences and symposiums. He is considered the best HOD in the history of CVSR, which was established in 2002. He is one of the only professors, who actually knows the subject and goes to any length to help a student out.

The other pool of lecturers of the CSE dept are all well qualified but are bit of a drab! Some of the best lecturers of this dept are Mrs. Sri Valli, Mrs. Sridevi, Mrs. Rama Devi, Mr. Vishnu Murthy (HOD).

“The assistant lecturers and the lab assistants are a pain in the a**”, says Preeti, a third year CSE student. “They are all mean minded and just want to give students a hard time”, she laments. A lot of the other students echo Preeti’s views. “Some of them are actually very nice and you should learn the knack of pataofying ‘em if you want things done”, says Pranita, a final year student of CSE. This is again a common problem in most of the colleges, where you are graded based on your face value or your rapport with the asst. lecturers and the lab in-charges.

One of the computer labs. Credit : Retro Penguin

There are 7 major labs under the CSE & IT department, which cover all the required subjects namely – CO, C and DS, DBMS, DWDM, UML, OS, Java, ADJ and DAA. All the labs are well equipped with good configuration systems, which serves the need.

The CSE dept has been accredited by the NBA recently along with the ECE and EEE dept. “I really don’t understand this whole NBA concept, they just take 3 grand more stating NBA fee”, says Dinesh, a third year CSE student, who had to shell out extra money to clear his fee.

For the course in Information Technology, the students must keep up with new developments and master new skills constantly due to the extremely rapid rate of advancements in computer technology and applications of information technology. New areas of specialization will become available by the day. The people working in IT use their knowledge of database and their utilities in providing Decision Support Systems to various problems in the socio-economic arena. This would include envisioning, designing, developing, and testing software applications – ERP’s, Database (from designing to administration), operating systems and network distribution. They may also be called on to solve problems that arise at the companies they work for or at client sites. These engineers typically have strong programming skills although this task comprises only a portion of their work.

Formal dress code for the labs. Credit : Retro Penguin

This course was introduced only two years ago mainly to increase the students intake. Surprisingly, the students of this branch show the most promise and have a lot of potential.

Mr. Vishnu Murthy is the HOD of this dept too and is never biased toward the CSE dept. and gives equal importance when it comes to taking important decisions concerning the two branches. The lecturers of this dept. are again, well educated and qualified but many of them fail to hold the students attention for long.

The lab in-charges are surprisingly lenient when it comes to this dept and there are almost no complaints from the students.

The most echoed complaint is that of ‘dress code’ in labs. “I don’t understand what my dress has got to do with working with the computers. Actually, I don’t understand what its got to do with anything. Bah, this sucks!” says Sabarish, a final year IT student, as he hurriedly tucks in his shirt and buttons his sleeves just before entering the lab.

Gaming @ Aagama '09 Credit : Sandeep M.

Since there is almost negligent difference between the two groups (CSE and IT), some of the lecturers are shared by the two groups. The best lecturers of this dept according to majority of the students are Mr. Srinivas, Mrs. Rama Devi, Mr. Sriram Murthy.

Aagama ’09 , a national level technical symposium was organized by all the departments but mainly spear headed by the CSE and IT dept. The fest was declared a ‘grand’ success with over 1000 students participating from colleges all over the nation. “The best part was the food”, says Sai, a third year IT student with a huge grin on his face. “The foods almost never this good when it comes to fests, for once the management wasn’t kanjoos when it came to the catering”, he adds.

“I would definitely abolish the ‘dress code’ rule and would recruit better lab in-charges”, says Aditya, a third year CSE student when asked what he would like to change about his department. “I’d get some better looking crowd and a hip canteen. But jokes aside, I’d introduce some new clubs which could add the spice element to the really boring curriculum”, says Ram, a third year IT student, when asked what he would do to improve the overall aspect of the college.

There have also been a lot of measures taken to curb ragging and the students of the CSE and IT dept have also formed an anti-ragging committee.

Some of the successful CVSR-ites. Credit: Sandeep M.

Overall, the CSE dept. has been producing some decent engineers who now work for MNC’s like Satyam (Now, Tech Mahindra), IBM, Infosys and Birlasoft. (The first batch of IT is yet to pass out). CVSR is currently rated number 10 in the JNTU list of the top 10 colleges of the city. So, if one picks CVSR as one’s choice in the EAMCET couselling, Cheers! Welcome to the growing CVSR fraternity.

Coming à demain, ECE and EEE!
