Agitation, Bandh, Telangana Issue, Riots, Academic Delay, Procrastination of Exams, Delayed Results, Religious tussles. Yet college fests are back with novel forms and new concepts. Maximum number of Engineering fests in and around Hyderabad take place in the months of February-March; but exceptions always exist! A National/Regional level symposium consumes at least one or two months of hard work, time of students and faculty in-charges. Albeit working for so many hours, the awaited day passes away as the president vehicle in the traffic. Nevertheless, there still continue to be enumerable and enthusiastic students who work rigorously for the fest.

But the question of the hour is Why college Fest? What does it take to make it possible? Here is an attempt to clear the 5 Ws 1 H and give an idea about the fest. A survey among the students has been taken from colleges in and around Hyderabad.

The grounds for conducting a fest in a college have many motives but to emphasize the top few reasons for fest to be conducted are:

1. To bring out the hidden talent in the students.

2. Look into world outside the college gates.

3. To learn time and finance management.

4. To bring in coordination among the students of all years and branches.

0th reason ‘Branding of the College’

Various Sponsors. Credits: Morle'La Wheermy

Functionality of Fests:

For an event to get noticed, their always should exist ‘Uniqueness’ or ‘Difference’ in comparison to the other fests. A college fest also requires umpteen hours of prior toil. To carry out an event certain rubrics and statute titles are to be maintained and followed.

Initially the skeletal structure of the event, the Budget is decided and interested students are requested to register for the coordinators’ team. For a fest to function there are various committees that are formed like: Core, Committees like Sponsors, Organizing, Event Heads, Publicity and Communication, Letter Work, External and Internal affairs and Volunteers.

The prominence is given to students who can work in parallel on more than two events at a time as the events should take shape from the outline. Various departments share few students. At this phase the entire process of functionality is divided into three heads. They are:

* Event Management: – Development of the events to presentation on the day of the fest. From paper to the end user application; perfect work which attracts people to the fest and which shows the events are better than the rest.

* Publicity: – Decisions on events to be publicized more, media partners to tie up, maximum strategies to get attention, how to get extra attention.

* Sponsors: – The critical zone of elimination. Uncanny Sense and Communication skills prioritized. Every student faces in prioritizing who sponsors and who doesn’t.

Prakriti: Agricultural Fest. Credits: Morle'La Wheermy

The important zone of the complete fest is to zero in on who supports and who sponsors the fest. To approach the exact company/person which is directly related to the theme of the fest is very significant. Maintaining documentation of the sponsors approached is a good tactic. “Some politely reject our request and some make us talk for hours together or snub. The best way to start with sponsors is to do a lot of home work on who sponsors, where, how much and how does he/she get convinced, then pick up students who are good with the analyzed work and send them for sponsorship,” says Gaurav Kaushal, Student- Aviation, CMEC.

“To find sponsors for the fest is a mental work. It needs a lot of logic. We have to be very careful while speaking, one word in a wrong context drowns the complete idea of sponsoring,” says Akshay Neelakantam, Student- ECE, SVIT. One important aspect is, to find whether the sponsor we are approaching has sponsored any other event or not. In case of a positive response try to “Maskafy“. “My college is not a renowned or deemed university; it’s not very popular, so initially it was scary to start off. Now after working on it, I feel it was a really excellent experience,” said Rohit Mishra, Student- ECE, SVIT.

With recession still affecting the economy, many companies point a direct “NO”. The businessmen and company sponsors have their own reason. “We always try to analyze the type of fest students organize and to get the best advantage and benefit for our company,” said Mr. Laxman Rao, Managing Director, S One Technology Private Limited. When asked about recession and its effect on the fests he says, “Basically before recession, all the decisions were taken by the local marketing dept but now everywhere the market is down, so even we have to try cost-cutting measures. We choose only such fests where we can get 99% benefit for sponsoring. We don’t sponsor just because we have money, right?”

“We mostly prefer fests where there is lot of female crowd who intend to look gorgeous. So in most cases we prefer such colleges where we apply our constraints,” said Shine Mathew, Marketing, Anoos Beauty Parlour. “The first thing we look into when we tie up with the college is the “BRAND” value. Most students tune into Radio channels at random. But in cases, where we are sponsoring them, they listen to our channel even during the advertisements. That way we gain more listeners,” said Sidharth, Ex-Marketing Incharge, Red FM (93.5).

Parakram: Sports Night or Sports Fest. Credits: Morle'La Wheermy

“Stalls are the best way to indulge students to stay on the campus. Games stalls and Food stalls get a lot of profits. Our college has a lot of these every year. We even get celebrities for college fests which results in more crowd inflow. Stalls are also best parts of economy for fests. Arranging stalls is extremely tiresome though,” said Dinesh Rayala, Student- EEE, CBIT.

Publicity, in the present day, is mainly done by enrolling with media and radio partners, online social communities, by sending texts to friends, by putting on posters and banners in college and on college buses, sending students to put on posters in other colleges and thereby publicizing the event. Few with a mega budget put on hoardings too. Grabbing attention towards a fest is difficult. It requires a lot of talent and new ways to design the poster. It should be impressive.

The posters and banners are to be catchy. One has to create easy and simple ways to convey the content. “To make posters, we usually ask for ideas and draft themes from all the students and once we get them, we sit down and select the best. If nothing is good then we design a new one altogether. In most cases, these things come to the forefront at the 11th hour. I have been making the website for my college fest for the past three years. In case of website, the template design takes 15 days, and coding at max an hour or two, if the content is ready. Event heads have to give the description of their respective events, and then the description is given to those students who can make it more effective,” says Karthik Navuluri, Student, CVRCE.

The arguments on a small decision, the rebellion ideas against college for taking selected people, the open protest from specific crowd for not asking them individually to take part in the fests are some of the serious issues. Suharsh Raj from MVSR says “Passionate and interested students are always welcome. It’s not a one man show. One cannot expect such individual requests.”

Event management is a huge responsibility. Everything needs a clear outline and work in all the directions. “We design an event and we have to test it in all the possible cases. Many colleges come up with new events every year. So in order to keep students stuck to our events, we need to be more creative and appealing. The outlook is to be made very glossy. All the events are to be well taken care of,” says Aditya Venkat, Student – ECE, Aurora Engineering College.

Sahaya 2010 : A fund raising event and college fest. Credits:Morle'La Wheermy

View Point:

Most college managements do the fests for Branding of the college. Few follow it just because it’s in vogue. When questioned “How Branding happens?” most students answered, “It’s a simple logic, when our college gives us permission for fests, then we show our college in the best possible way. All those who attend the event look at the best ends of the college. All the students praise the management. The college can get students with better ranks in the college which increases the popularity.”

“We encourage students to have a fest because they will get to learn more things; which is the prime motto and they enjoy it too,” said Mr. Narasinmha Rao, Ex- Principal, SVIT. “We take the initiative of bringing out the potential and hidden talent of the students by making them organize the fests,” says Mrs. Meenakshi Dhondi, faculty in-charge, Gaia 09, SVIT.

Few students feel, “we get to showcase our talent, skill and working spirit when the fests are conducted.” Whereas a few others feel that, “Working for a fest we will learn new things like how to manage the finance and time, according to the situation.”

The co-ordination among the students is the key aspect to success. There also exist reasons for students to work for the fest like attendance shortage (as attendance is given to students who work for the fest), popularity (name in the poster, pamphlet), self-satisfaction, compelled by college, and Coordinator certificates which adds to the résumé. Scathing comments do prevail as critics always like to see things only from their perspective.

Preparing a model. Credits: Suharsh Raj

Mrs. Subha Sharma, a parent comments, “No festival is as big as a college fest for students. They sort of do everything for the fest. At the beginning it looks like a tough job which is hard to make real, but these students make it a perfect presentation by the decided date. My daughter started working on her college fest from 2nd year. Initially I objected to it, but then after viewing the work that they put into to make their fest, I am now proud.”

“When we started working, everything was confusing and vague. We had to design, code, test and make it work within a short span of two months. It was fun working with other students from the college. Most of the decisions are taken in the regular meets. We usually consider students who are regular to meets as “IN”, and exclude those who don’t and start working. It’s tough but fun,” says Shahbaj Sheikh, Student- IT, BVRIT.

Hopefully, this article would interest all those students, who want to be part of the fest but question themselves, “Why should I work for the fest and what will I gain?” And for those, who are already working, a few more ways of making college fests a sure-fire.

The words ‘tour’ and ’trip’ conjures in one’s mind- excitement and happiness. To top it a ‘college tour’, it virtually means enjoyment and loads of unlimited fun. The recent tour of CVR college in December spelt the same and more so for the 3rd year students. Eagerness to go with friends and to be one among the merry makers set the ball rolling for the excited students. Therein, arose a major stumbling block of getting permission of the respective parents. A herculean task indeed! But, knowing the tried and tested tactics of their seniors , each student convinced each other friends parents to let their wards go ahead for the tour. Oh! poor parents had to yield in the end. There they scored the 1st thumbs up victory as expected.

G.V.S.N. Kaushik, Krishna kannaya, Phani kiran, Raghavendra gaud and Srikanth took the initiative and organised the entire tour shouldering the gamut responsibility of the mamoth crowd of 80 students in all. Two very responsible members, Ms.Bhanu and Mr.Sainath, of the CVR faculty had accompanied them. Hanumanth Rao of Swift Travels, Kukatpally (ph:9866611551), took care of the conveyance, spanning over 10 days of hectic schedule including Agra, Delhi, Mathura, Shimla, Kullu-Manali and Amritsar. Next, followed the shopping ‘cos of the winter season extreme climate in North India.

Before long the ‘D’ day arrived, the scene at the railway platform spoke volumes, students geared up with their luggages and anxious parents waiting to see off their children who unmindful of that fact were busy chit chatting with their friends. And not to miss the inseparable cell phone text messages. With the blaring honking of the train, the usual rush into the coaches and a scramble for the alloted berths, whole bunch of waving hands through the windows, was how the cherishable journey began.

Symbol of Love. Credits: Krystal Clear

After the initial excitement, everyone settled down to satisfy their grumbling tummies. Murali said, “The train journey in particular brought us closer, getting to know each other better.” Sleep eluded most of them, as Anusha put it,”College gossip kept us awake all night”. The morning at Agra was foggy and the breathtaking view of Taj Mahal left a everlasting photographic memory in all of their minds. In Delhi, everyone freaked out shopping and had to buy extra bags to fit in the large purchases. And not to miss the wonderful carvings at Akshardham where Aditya was reminded of the “ghastly shooting” which had taken place a few years ago. “I feel a divine sense prevailing at this very moment”, remarked Anapoorna Divya and Srujana felt the atmosphere to be very calm and serene.

Next destination Mathura. The tedious journey to Mathura was soon forgotten at the very sight of the beautiful marble Krishna, Radha statues. Students were very well taken care of , especially, as far as food was concerned. The organisers made sure that there was no lock of the typical Andhra food suiting the students palates. The chill and breezy Shimla welcomed each of the shivering souls. But that did not deter these over-enthusiastic eskimos from going on the pony ride to Kufri . It was not missed by any of the students when compared to the earlier batch of senior students who missed going there because of ill health or plain laziness. Kufri ride was followed by a ball of a time at the DJ night where everyone let their hair down. Four hours of non stop dancing and campfire helped them to ward off the biting cold.

Manali. Credits: Krystal Clear

The very next day, Manali saw a very excited and over ecstatic gang ready to go river rafting of 14kms, barring the freezing temperature. Kamesh said,”It is once in a life time experience and we should not miss it”. At the end of the day, everyone felt they had swallowed more than what they could chew!! The bumpy, rocky ride in the freezing waters had literally left them numb and they felt that a 7km ride would have sufficed. With not a word exchanged, all of them hit the sack directly and slipped into a world of dreams awaiting yet another new, adventurous and fun filled morning.

The following day witnessed an army of students marching with skiing sticks, layers of warm clothing who were heading towards the snow clad mountains of Manali through the rothang pass. All of them had the time of their life by throwing balls of snow at each other till their energy levels dropped. On the mountains, a very much awaited hot cup of chai saw most of them gulping down 2-3 cups full. A great relief indeed!! All the students had captured their memorable and unforgettable moments with their cameras in each of the places they visited. Anil could very well be an entrant for the Limca book of records for clicking nearly 2000 snaps, phew! The night view of the Golden Temple in Amritsar was a treat to the weary eyes at the fag end of the tour. The ‘prasadam’ of the temple was literally ‘God Sent’.

Golden Temple. Credits: Krystal Clear

Anil, a student, whose birthday was celebrated in a grand way in the train itself was one of the most memorable happenings . The birthday cake was cut with a ’sword’ purchased in Amritsar by one of them, much to the amusement of the co-passengers though! None of them had a wink of sleep that night. Each of the student wished that these ‘Happy Days’ would never end. But as it is said that ’every beginning has an end’, or rather, ‘a happy end’, it was surely the time to end this saga filled with nostalgic and unforgettable moments.

The train arrived 5 hours behind schedule at Sec’bad station much to everyone’s happiness and disappointment of the waiting parents. A lot of welcome hugs to the parents and bye-bye , see yous to the friends saw the CVR bunch head back home with a heavy yet happy heart. “Home sweet Home”, as they reckon!

CVR College of Engineering (Accredited by NBA) was established in 2001 and its fifth batch of successful students has just graduated from the college. The Cherabuddi Education Society sponsors the college. The society aims at creating a state-of-the-art engineering institution in association with leading NRI professionals and well known academicians of Andhra Pradesh. The society aims to harness technical excellence and financial power of NRI’s in making CVR College of Engineering a pre-eminent technical institution. The college is the only one in the Osmania University area that is promoted by NRI technology professionals resident in the US. The NRI promoters are associated with cutting-edge technologies of the computer and electronics industry. That’s what the prospectus of the college says. Now, for some reality check.

How do students at CVR define CVR??? Well, you have to ask them and when quipped about it, pat came the reply ‘C#33*!#3 V33!! R#!*&$‘, that’s what they ‘educate’ their juniors during the ragging season. Good things about your college? ”Good things???!!! Sorry, repeat the question, you must be joking mate or you have no idea about this college”, was what a group of students shot back. We posed the same question to a couple of other students with textbooks in their hands and hurrying to a classroom and they replied, “The college as such is fine, pretty good lecturers, good labs and stuff but its kinda boring with rigid rules, flexibility with the rules would do a world of good to the college”. What’s to hate in your college? ”Everything, everything”, was the stern reply by a bunch of students in the canteen. ”No freedom, some bloody rules, no sports activities, no proper sport facilities, acads is a pain in the ass after sometime”, when posed to another group.

What do you do in the free time? “We, first years have no free time, the seniors generally have it from 3:15 to 4:00, but there’s pretty much nothing to do in the college, some of the guys are found in the playgrounds, the girls in the canteen, the lounge (the guys don’t have it) or near the buses”, verbatim by Akhila. How’s the infrastructure in your college? “The labs are really awesome, good support by the faculty as well, I wish I had labs every day, kaam jaldi ho jata and I can finish everything and go out to play basketball”, said Akshay. Tell us more about your college, let’s say extracurricular activities. “Extra balls activities, yeah right!!! What do you expect, this is a crazy wacko ass college man, if you want to hone your skills, forget ‘Honing’ even if you want to show your skills, search elsewhere ‘coz CVR is not the place”, replied staunchly by Vijay. “Let me think!! Oh yeah!!! I forgot, the college has a cricket team, a volleyball team highly favored by the PTs, and this year they allowed the basketball team, the football team to participate in various other college tournaments”, as replied by Sameer. How about something for the girls? “Ah!! We have a throwball team and we have participated and we have won too”, told Archana gleefully.

Fun activities in your college, or any hangout spots in the college? “Not many really, the-can’t-really –ignore canteen, the buses, and… That’s it!!! All these places only after the class hours, during the classes they are strictly prohibited. There’s no proper shade or trees in the college, you are better off sleeping in your class rather than roaming around, if you are found wandering, then you have put yourself in jeopardy”, signs off Shruthi. How would you paint an overall picture about your college? “The academics is fine in the college, other activities are really sporadic, bunking and having fun in the college is a strict no-no, no play during the lunch hours (but still, we play), college buses are neat, canteen as always is kinda bad (wish there was more variety, and cheap too) and you will learn about other nuances once you end up here, the seniors will impart ‘gyaan’ and of course you will gain ‘knowledge’ (not the bookish stuff, mind you) as well, so that’s the picture”, explained vividly by Chaitanya.

That’s the story about CVR (affiliated to JNTU) (Accredited by NBA), yet another college in and around Hyderabad. Details about the college, the big four departments ECE, CSE, IT, EEE each with 120 students and THE Department (pretty famous) in their College, EIE with 60 students. That’s the courses offered for the B.Tech students. For the graduates there’s MBA, MCA and M.Tech (VLSI, Software Engineering) . The college has its own transport facility, with buses plying from everywhere in the city, and of course the RTC buses too. The college has good infrastructure and well equipped labs, less sports facilities though, good academics, but lacks the image of a well known college to the denizens living in the city.

‘Ragging’… Ahem ahem!!! The word most of them dread. Most of them??? Yep! The management, the seniors and the juniors of course. Why??? The management doesn’t want to be embroiled in a controversy, the seniors wouldn’t want to tarnish their name and if it’s too serious legal hassles hover around as well; the juniors get frightened just because they hear many cases happening. “Ragging, oh really, or just friendly interaction?”, as many students at CVR College of Engineering put forward. Call it whatever you want, Ragging or friendly interaction or OP – ‘Orientation Program’, is definitely most necessary to welcome the first yearites into the college and initiate them about the system and the guidelines. The system and the guidelines, what are these? The system is the rules of the college and the professors, the guidelines are the advices given by the seniors to the juniors about how they can bend the rules or just flout them and of course sometimes moral and career advices too! The geeks do that it seems. So, what exactly is this process of ragging at CVR? Let’s find out…

Some of the seniors

First things first, “BD – bio data kottu bey”, is what most of the seniors will tell you. Don’t be hasty and start I am this, my dad’s that and stuff and I do this, etc. “Senior thope ikkada, junior should give respect bey”, said Kumar (name changed), a 3rd year guy, well that was guideline #1. Do what the senior says and nothing more, don’t screw yourself by being over excited. What was it like, when you were in your 1st year was our question. ”Then it was worse baap, rods or danda or belts or even bottles anything and everything in our asses… it was fun though!!!” Kumar exclaimed hilariously. On being asked if this is revenge or getting back to them just because of what he experienced? The sole purpose of ragging is brotherhood and developing relations between the seniors and juniors was what he said.

Was ragging a pleasant experience overall? “My foot pleasant, I didn’t like the way seniors treated me initially like that and I was forced to do all kinds of stuff”, said a first year student. “It wasn’t that bad, except that I was hampered financially”, said Akshay, another student. “My only complaint is that juniors shouldn’t be forced to spend money on seniors, like I’ve spent 3000 bucks!”, was what another first year student said. The dreaded gangs, if any, probably there was just this one, the students coined the term “The Rapist Gang” known only to a very few because it was particular to a bus route, the news is its already been two or three years since they’ve passed out, so there’s no fear of any gang raping (sadistic ragging) in the college.

Students at the anti ragging meet convened the management

When asked what they expect against ragging from the management? “Nothing much really!”, said most of the students. “I knew the management was strict against ragging and it took efforts too, to curb ragging in the college and they have an anti ragging squad in the college”, said Sashank. “The seniors are wary of the anti ragging squad in the college because the members are kept secret and the complaints are taken care of by the management and as such there is no serious ragging in our college”, said Shruthi.

Advice to the freshers coming in now – Don’t worry about ragging at CVR because the management is pretty strict against it and over the years ragging has gone down considerably, and ragging is not what it is as it was four years ago. Interact and get ragged by the seniors, it’ll help develop relationships among people and you will get to know yourself better and others too. If you don’t intend to, probably you will lose out on good people, so at the end of the day, involve yourself in some healthy ragging and you will enjoy it as most of the other students at CVR have. Have fun while getting ragged is what most seniors have advised, they’ll have fun and you will definitely too.

Amidst the sunshine and few drops of rain, an event of dhol, dance, drums, dhamaka, zeal and fervor, where individual talent bloomed, mind replenished, and soul encored with serenity. Dreams glittered to a new era in CVR, on a special moment of college life as these events turned into a remarkable one “The College Day Function”, held with a lot of glitz and glamour. Every performance mesmerized the audience and exalted them to a great deal of joy and merriment. The day began with the rendition of a prayer song and a welcome dance, followed by three hours of non-stop fun and entertainment.

A “Smooth Criminal” started the show and he was indeed dangerous. A mimicry group captured the audience with their perfect imitation Dr.YSR and his many schemes like Indiramma rajyam and Rajeev pallebata and nagarabata, followed by the very generous “Television” act by Nara Chandrababu Naidu and of course the khandhan of telugu film industry, the Nandamuri family with the head of the family Balaaaaaa Krishnaaaaaaa to Jr NTR and every other person sharing the family name and their supposedly active involvement in politics for a “better Telugu state”(must’ve read in your SMS’s), poor KCR and his dream of a separate Telangana also wasn’t spared. This was followed by a group dance by girls….. it was more of a “Girlfriend” show and they were so close, that they couldn’t leave their partners even off-stage. ”Love mera hit hit….hit hit” was a definite hit with the students and “chance milthe hi” dancers “lagethe dance pe”. “Maa da ladla” indeed “ bigad gaya tha”, a very humorous “Dostana” act.

One of the bands. Credit: Deccan Tifosi

Perfect “konnections” were made with the audience, well, the dancers also killed them with “mar jaani………mar jaani” and “co….co…..college styleee” was at its best and everybody was “star……star mega star….star” in their own right. Excitement was at feverish pitch and hearts raced and danced to the tunes of “dhoom” and “crazy kiya re” . All the girls were floored by(rather they were on the bench cheering) the “Bachna aae Haseeno” dance. The voice of the anchors was lost in rapturous enjoyment by the crowd who were bench banging and shouting to support the performances on stage. When all this was happening the management was concerned with the benches(ha ha ha pity them!!) and they wanted some order in the auditorium but in vain. The management ordered the masses to be seated but it was met with boo’s and the frustration among them was seen and heard when quite a lot of(!@$%$%# ,*&&*^) expletives flew from everywhere.

The students then left the auditorium to have lunch provided by the management and some of the unlucky people( let’s say lucky) found that there were no plates and if there were plates there was no food. After the lunch, were performances by two bands from their very own college. ” Magik” was recreated with their rock act(Rock On!!) and “Retro Fusion” infused life into the high octane enjoyment by the crowd and they egged on for some more songs but the management put a deaf ear to their pleas and restricted the bands to only a song or two and the reason cited was time constraints. Some of the professors seated in the front rows clutched their ears when the bands were belting out raucous songs. This was the last of the cultural programs and no sooner did it get over, there was a sudden void in the auditorium and not a trace of a single student inside it, the reason being the boring formal college day function involving the performances of the dignitaries on stage.

Audience. Credit: Deccan Tifosi

The formal function finally began with another prayer song and another welcome dance routine and the chief guest Dr E.Sai Baba Reddy was invited onto the dais along with the management. The annual report was presented by the principal Dr.A.D.Raj Kumar who asked the students to strive for further excellence. The Director, Dr C.V.Raghava praised all the participants for their performances and urged everyone out there to “exercise your vote in the general elections” and he had a piece of advice for the students “drive carefully, I don’t want to see our students name in the news (in the wake of a recent accident involving four fatalities among 6 students from CVSR college)” and his message can be shortened to “invest in yourself during bad times, so you can be good in better times.” This was followed by the prize distribution to all the meritorious students and the winners in all the sports competitions throughout the year. The final year students were also given a farewell by the management as part of the college day function.

The organizers were very happy with the function and they felt the event was organized well and the response was incredible. The audience felt the acoustics in the auditorium were much better than last year and this added to their fun and frolic. Memoirs from some of the final year students “most memorable days of my life” Spoorthi 4th year EIE, “Marvelous joy ride during my 4 years here, good friends, excellent infrastructure and supporting faculty” Prabhu 4th year EEE.

Ciencia is a national level technical symposium conducted by CVR college of Engineering. Ciencia, which broadly means science in Spanish questioned, challenged students on their mental might in the various facets of technologies, basics, skill, threw up many answers at the end of the two day extravaganza. The purpose and idea of this year’s fest was to innovate and improvise the emerging technologies for the better through knowledge.

Ciencia ’09 began with the inaugural function, two distinguished personalities were invited as the Chief Guest and the Guest of Honour . The Chief Guest being Dr.Murali Padmanabhan, Head, Learning Technologies Solutions Group, Tata Consultancy Services, Hyderabad. He mentored the participants and the students in strengthening their basics and unleashing their potential by being inquisitive. He emphasized more on innovation. Innovate, innovate, innovate and you will be a leader was his message. He also stressed on keeping ourselves abreast at modern technologies like avatars, chatter bots, Haptecs and the likes. His message was loud and clear and the way to proceed was to innovate.

The Guest of Honour Prof P.Subba Reddy, Director, University Computer Centre, Osmania Univesity, Hyderabad offered us a perspective of knowledge. His speech lacked the enthusiasm which was earlier built up by the chief guest .He spoke in a monotone which fluttered many a patient listeners but his address stressed on knowledge and its importance in innovating and creating path breaking technologies.

Well, that was the formal, ceremonious , usual beginning after which the participants made a beeline at the registration desk to register themselves for the plethora of events available. Paper and poster presentations drew 280 participants out of which 100 were shortlisted, the response this year was bland compared to last year which drew 430 participants. The VLSI and Grid Computing workshops had steady inflow of people through both the days. There were other technical events like Fix n Win, Tweak XP, Electro Whiz for the academically and technically inclined geeks. The event which had the most response was “Treasure Hunt” and the registrations had to be forcefully closed, after which the participants thoroughly enjoyed hunting for the “chest”.

The not so technophiles were spoilt by choice in the robotics event ROBOTIKA which drew a very good crowd in all the five events under it. Good organizing was what the participants had felt and expressed the same. Every bot had an identity of its own, be it shape or mechanism. The highest attendance was however for Robosoccer and Robotrack. Robots tested their might against each other in Robowarz and the winner decimated its opponents in every round winning hands down. The champion of Robosoccer (Les Invincibles) true to its name was invincible, virtually untouched.

Les Invincible. Credit: Deccan Tifosi

They also had a exquisite art gallery with truly amazing pieces of poetry and paintings. The tattoo artist Rakesh from their very own college was very sublime in his body art dexterity. The best is always saved for the last, LAN . People who claimed themselves to be hardcore gamers proved that they aren’t into geeky and nerdy stuff, instead they are suave and punk and the cool dudes around. Clans raged wars against each other in Warcraft. Snipers and assassins sprayed bullets in Counter Strike. Rubber was burnt and smoked and nitrous fumes released on the streets of Need for Speed and the Most Wanted kept the RPM at superior levels.

The two day symposium ended with the valedictory function, the gathering was addressed by Govindharajulu, Head, Embedded Systems Lab , IIIT, Hyderabad. The winners were awarded their certificates and of course the Prize Money. Some of the participants expressed the food being bad on day two and otherwise the events were fun and interesting. The robots vouched that they would come back with renewed vigor and innovative designs and mechanisms to conquer its opponents. It was indeed a pleasure to see happy faces and smiles at the closure of the euphoria.
