Most of the students have had nightmares of boredom after being done with the JNTU examinations. A few of them were happy for various reasons. Since, the last exam marks an end of one shuddering semester. A few of them could take a break from college and go to their home town, while the others could just while away time. The end of this semester marks something else too, for the mechanical engineering students of JBIET; The very much awaited, ‘INDUSTRIAL TOUR’! These two words created lot of enthusiasm when the news reached the students. Everyone was charged and forgot all about the horrifying exams they wrote. All started gossiping and discussing about what all to carry to the trip, where to shop, what all places to see, et al. Happiness was in the air! When the destination places were revealed, the students were all the more elated. Delhi, Agra, Shimla, Kulu, Manali and Amritsar.

The exams ended on 3rd December and the tour was scheduled from 8th December to 16th December. “It wasn’t planned very well in advance, but we managed to gather 58 students, who were ready to go for the tour”, said the management. Everyone managed to keep the luggage as minimal as possible because they knew they would shop a lot. After all, the places they were heading to, demanded a lot of attention and shopping. The train had started at 6.25am. “This is going to be so much fun. We are no ways going to sleep”, said Divya, a student who was a part of the very exciting tour. The train traveled all the way from the ‘Nampally station’ to Agra. Students played dumb charades all night and when they were bored of it, they played ‘UNO’(cards).

They reached Agra at 5.30 AM and directed their luggage to hotel Tara Palace. (Phone number – 0562-3258359). One of the spots they first visited was the Agra Fort. Next on the list was one of the seven wonders of the world, the Taj Mahal. It was a remarkable time spent for the students, who did not get to see the beautiful Taj until that day. They saw the Fatehpur Sikhri too. There was a halt in Agra for that night after a tiring but a wonderful day.

The next day mechites of JBIET drove to Mathura to visit the temples around. After checking the temple out, they drove for 6 hours to reach Delhi to visit the Akshardham temple and the lotus temples, which were so enticing. They shifted their luggage to hotel Vishesh Continental. (Phone number – 011-25154083).

Mathura’s atmosphere was ideal. The food, weather and the warm people there promised a very pleasant stay to these campers. On the 11th of December, they covered the local places in Delhi, like the parliament house, India Gate, the Birla mandir etc. The Birla Mandir was beautiful with a lot of intricate sculptures on it. Then came the best part of Delhi, the shopping! There is so much of price disparity between the shops in Delhi and those in Hyderabad. Delhi has been a boon for girls and for boys, who have girlfriends. “We get superb stuff. There is a place called ‘Palika bazar’, where once a person goes in with loaded pockets he is sure to empty them by the time he leaves the place”, said Priyanka.

After Delhi, according to the itinerary was Shimla. Students had to take an eight hour drive to the chilly place. The temperature was around zero degrees! On the 12th morning they reached Shimla. They played with few very cute rabbits on their way. There they stayed in Hotel Quality Inn. (Phone number – 0177 2633209).

Cute rabbits, which grabbed the attention. Credit: Aura Unleashed

The place was extremely cold. Few of the students could not take such low temperature and they even fell sick. They were taken to the local hospital and they were helped with few medicines. “We visited the Kurfi and the mall road. We bought trolleys there to fit in the extra stuff that we bought as the place was not sufficient in our baggages. We got shawls for ourselves, parents, cousins and neighbours too. There were awesome sweaters there. We bought few of them too”, said Kiravani, who seemed to be a shopaholic!

“On the 13th of December, we drove to Manali, via Kulu. We drove for approximately 13 hours! Oh my god we were freezing to death! The temperature was almost minus four degrees. It was getting hard for us to breathe because there was insufficient oxygen as we were going up. Taking turns, few of our other friends too suffered from cold and headache. There we had snow fights! It was incredible, we were doing this for the first time and absolutely enjoyed every moment of it”, exclaims Divya.

In Manali, students stayed at Hotel Angels Inn (Phone number – 01902-251269). On 14th December, they proceeded to Hidimba temple, which is very exquisite. The Rohtang pass, which connects the Kulu valley with the Lahul Valleys of Himachal Pradesh was a spine tingling experience to the students. They visited Vasishth kund next and then drove to a hotel at Amritsar, Hotel Randhawa International (Phone number – 0183-50002571).

“We were supposed to visit two industries on this day but could not, because few of our friends could not recover completely and were suffering from body pains and mild fever. The whole day just passed by and we had no other choice but to take care of our friends, who were not susceptible to the extreme temperatures. As we could not visit the industries on time, it was at bit problematic for us to get the permission from the industries for the next day. So this visit had to be called off”, said Prashanth. The students were a little deplored but were more concerned about their friends so everything was smooth.

After checking out these places, which were very cool they drove to Amritsar. “One of the tourist attraction there is the golden temple and we got to see it! Wow, I suddenly got reminded of the scene in the movie ‘Rang de basanti’ and the song “In onkaar” was running in my mind as long as I was there. We got many ‘kadas’ from there, which are considered sacred by the Punjabi community. The sanctity, ambiance of that place was totally mesmerizing”, said Divya.

After a lovely time at all these places, they got back to square one! They landed in Delhi again and the ‘Dakshin express’ started back to Hyderabad at 10.50pm. All of them were awfully tired. The next morning when all the students woke up to find themselves in the train, they did realize that all those surpassing moments spent, were nothing but a dream come true!

“Have you chosen MECHANICAL! Are you out of your mind or something? It’s not your thing at all. Why didn’t you ask me before?” screamed Sirisha, when she heard that her cousin Varsha had chosen the Mechanical Engineering stream. Heard these exclamations somewhere!? Oh yes, one gets to hear all these dialogues every time the counseling finishes. But as of now, Mechanical, Aeronautical and Civil are the most sought after groups after recession and the subsequent ’seeming’ downfall of IT.

“The drive to choose this branch was that there was no other option and also, the love for Robotics made me choose this college”, said Arjun, a 2nd year Mechanical Student. Mechanical students however, unanimously say that this is the only branch, which has a lot of scope and they can join any field later on in the future. They can work in fields like Production, Designing, Analysis of various systems or they can also switch over to the IT field. This branch has been evergreen and the pioneer among all engineering groups.

“I selected Aeronautical because I wanted to fulfill my dream. I want to design a plane, which will land in my backyard. People can purchase it for 20-30 lakhs”, says Mohd. Imaluddin, a 2nd year aeronautical student, who aims to reach the skies.

Mr. Srinivas is the HOD for both Aeronautical and Mechanical Departments. He encourages students and always keeps them occupied. He’s been here from 4 years. One of the lecturers, Mr. Kulkarni, is a retired scientist from DRDL having good experience in practical field. “He is very interactive”, the students say. Faculty is okay but they lack good communication skills in the English language and hence, they tend to switch over to Telugu most of the time. “Some of them just read out from the material, which they bring to the class without explaining much”, some students complain. The all time favourite among all the lecturers is undoubtedly, Mr. Mallesham, who is the Principal of the College. His ever smiling, ‘never-say-die’ attitude are the major plus points, agree all the students.

Aeronautical Students. Credit: Swathi

Coming to labs, most of them are satisfactory but some of them definitely need to be developed/upgraded as the students are forced to go to other colleges for their lab externals. The college authorities are constructing these labs much to the students’ relief. UTL and WinTunnel labs are under construction. Workshop equipment is not at all good and changes need to be made.

“Some labs did not exist at all and our seniors were forced to go to the neighbouring college during externals”, says Jyotsna, a 2nd year student. Dress code in the labs is mandatory for all the students, which includes a navy blue coat.

“We have been taken to Air Force Academy, Dundigal, Begumpet Airport and Hitech city as part of our field work. We should have more technical visits. We are taught more theory than practical field work. We have less on-field exposure”, complain the students of Mechanical and Aeronautical Departments.

Mechanical Lab. Credit: www.sriindu.ac.in

One problem faced in the college is that students are divided into sections based on marks and lecturers tend to support the bright ones more, thus neglecting the others, who really need their help. Mutual exchange should be there, allege all the students. “Indiscipline is not at all tolerated and lecturers keep threatening us from time to time that they will see our end during external exams”, says Priyanka, a 2nd year Mechanical student.

“There is not much scope after completing B.Tech as promising jobs are things of the past and even the future of IT field looks bleak. You either got less scope for good jobs or you have to settle down as lecturers like us”, say many of the lecturers. “Unless we work really hard and shine, we have to settle for menial jobs”, says Alekhya, a 2nd year Mechanical student.

However, better times are always round the corner. Students need to cheer up and follow their dreams. A rating of 6/10 can be given for both the Aeronautical and Mechanical branches. The fee per year is Rs. 30,000 and the management-quota fee is Rs. 4 to Rs. 7 lakhs for both the branches and is negotiable.

The core courses of Engineering, Electrical & Electronics Engineering (EEE) and Mechanical Engineering (Mech) and the basic course Electronics and Communications Engineering (ECE) have given rise to many other branches. These are considered the basic and core branches of engineering history. These branches are indirectly responsible for a great history of every invention. Even the computer is an electronic device that is ruling the world today. All the inputs taken by the electronic machines are in the form of 0’s and 1’s. For electrical and mechanical its electricity and motors are the key things. An interest in physics and dynamics of all the electrical and electronic devices is a must for these branches. All that a general man knows is, we need power to switch on everything, but how the current flows and what is the direction it all happens is a concept of thrill and passion. (Picture: Regulated Power Supply: A device used by ECE and EEE students. Credit: Morle’la Wheermy)

The ECE branch at SVIT is headed by Mr. D.S.Rao garu, the EEE branch by Dr. Kesavan garu and the Mech by Mr. Bashaveshwar Rao garu. All the Head of the Departments have more than 10 years of teaching experience and are strictly concerned about the students. The EEE HOD Dr. Kesavan was the former principal of the college and later he is placed as HOD for EEE. He authored many books and one of them being Control Systems by Hitech publications is very popular.

The annual intake into ECE is 120, EEE is 60 and Mech is 30 students respectively. These seats are filled through EAMCET counseling. And the lateral entries are filled in the second year. The ranks range up to 50,000 in ECE and EEE, more than 50,000 in Mech. The counseling seat fee depends on the JNTU rules and regulations. The management seat fee varies from one branch to another. Due to the recession the inflow into ECE, EEE and Mech has increased drastically. The management fee for ECE was up to 6 lakhs, EEE is 4 lakhs and Mech was 2 lakhs previously. But due to various other factors it increased this year. Established in 1981, the Department of ECE offers a 4-Year B.E. and a 2-Year M.E. Degree Programme. The M.E. is has Embedded Systems and VLSI Design [M.E], with an annual intake of 18 students.

Placements:

ECE: There has been a steady increase in the number of students placed through campus recruitment in reputed organizations – Satyam, L & T, Wipro, Tata Consultancy Services [TCS] and CMC etc. EEE and Mech had no placements. “I am glad the college provides us with extra potential and support, even for those students, who attend external placements are provided with good guidance”, said a ex student. “I don’t think there are any placements and those, who are already placed got it outside the college as per my knowledge”, said Sandhya.

Infrastructure and Laboratories :

The Department of ECE is equipped with 12 labs, 4 advanced labs. Advanced labs like VLSI Design Centre (PPVITSER) are established jointly with PortalPlayer Private Limited Advanced Data Communications & Computer Network Lab established under CISCO Local Academy programme Digital Signal Processing Lab Embedded Systems Lab. For the EEE branch is spread over an area of 1,000 Sq. mts, the Department is equipped with 6 labs. The Mech has 12 well and fully fledged labs a central workshop with the facilities of Carpentry House, which imparts necessary skills to the student. “We don’t have the exact infrastructure in the labs and most of the times when we connect a circuit it won’t work”, said an ECE student. “We are provided with labs having good infrastructure and we have great opportunities given to try new things too at our labs”, said Ravi from EEE. “We don’t have complete infrastructure in the labs but whatever is there is sort of satisfactory”, rants a Mech student. “Our main problem is with Rajeshwari mam, basically she is very friendly but when it comes to labs she makes us stand completely through the lab sessions. Being strict is fine. The ECE dept is sort of caustic”, told another student from ECE. The college provides departmental computer centre, departmental library, classrooms with modern teaching aids and staff rooms. For details visit http://www.svit.ac.in.

Faculty:

The college management proclaims that all the branches are provided with good faculty and the faculty are very experienced too. When queried how true this statement is the students replied as follows.

ECE: “We have few good and few very bad faculties. Few are awesome they tell us hows and whats when we have a doubt. And in ECE, it’s like we have only 35-45% of such good faculty. Most of the time when questioned about something, they twist and twirl it and leave it without giving a reply”, averred Abhijeet. “Our HOD teaches very well and he is very experienced too. He is very serious about the behaviour of the students”, harangued Archana. “Personally I don’t have any problem with my faculty, they teach us and ultimately it’s even the responsibility of the students to read and learn more”, said Harika.

EEE: “Our HOD is the best person to teach but the problem with him is he is a very Hi-fi teacher. He will start the topic with words when we don’t know alphabets even. He teaches far better, which feeble minds like ours won’t be able to understand. And the faculty are good too even if there are only 2-3 students in the class still they take classes”, said Sai.

Mech: “Our ex principal was from Mech so that helped us a lot. He sent us for industry interactions and that was a matter to laud. Faculty is hopefully 50% fine. Pavan sir is very dangerous. He is good but one has to be very careful with him. We can pass off in exams only if one is caught copying then they will fail them. Lakshiminarayana sir is the one, who sets all the marks of the students in labs, internals and even for project”, told Sai from Mechanical.

Students at Electronics lab.

“As of now the labs are okay but they don’t have that ardor that holds the students to attend labs. Except for attendance we don’t have any other reason to attend labs”, said a second year student of ECE. “We don’t have any sort of issues with our HOD and we neither love him nor hate him. He has got a million brains fused into one”, alleged Teja from EEE.

The EEE students are best known for bunking and the Mech for ‘rowdyism‘ in the college. The ECE students are ambiguous. “We learnt a lot in the college. It gave us lot of opportunity to prove our talent and we are also able to protract our skills”, stated Vijay. The college has a good technical base and the main problem is with the students, one cannot expect the faculty to spoon feed every concept in detail. The course time is less and one always has to be ready to study for ones self too, after all now we are at under graduate level was the response of most of the students.

The ECE branch is rated 6/10, EEE is 7/10 and Mechanical 6.5/10. “Our college was established just 5 years back. It is on the way to achieve. The point of joy is that there are more number of students, who have very good communication skills, talent and mingle mentality. In the process of growth we achieved a lot till now”, said a faculty. “All the students in college are good; one thing is there should be someone constantly reminding them about importance of studies. I do that. The college management provides a wide platform for all the students in all possible ways and few can’t be given. The most problematic students in the college are second year ECE students”, said Narsingh, a worker at SVIT. He is better known as ‘Dean of the College’.

On the whole the college has all kinds of students. Few like it and few don’t. But many proclaim it as a good learning centre. So Cheers SVIT!!!

The latest and youngest branch to be introduced in CMEC – Mechanical Engineering; was long anticipated to become a part of the college which already had ECE, IT, CSE and Aeronautical Engineering, better known as its far cousin. It was introduced in last years EAMCET counseling and had 60 seats available then, and has been increased to 120 seats this year. (Picture: CMEC – Mechanical Block.
Surely after the recession has hit IT and CSE hard the hot favorites among the students have become the Mechanical and Electrical, but among the two the evergreen field is and will always remain is the Mechanical; considered to be the Big Bro of many other engineering discipline like Automobile, Aeronautical, Production, Mechatronics, Robotics etc, it still remains a great choice to be opted for in the Bachelors of Technology.

Ankit a student 2nd year of Mechanical engineering from CMEC quotes “Our Head of Department Mr. Veeraraju Sir is one of those few persons with a “NEVER GIVE UP” attitude…he is always encouraging. And that’s the reason not only me, but everyone in the whole mechanical department always regards him as an “Ideal Person”. I’ve learnt a lot. From him and still there is so much more to learn from him”

No doubt after reading what is mentioned above you may have guessed by now when asked to the students “Who is there favorite lecturer” All of them replied in chorus their HOD sir. And when asked about the rest of faculty members Gautham tells us all of them are good up to a point and are hard working in their respective subjects thou not motivating enough like their favourite Veeraraju Sir but not all can be the BEST right?

<img class="size-medium wp-image-4849" title="CMEC Mech 02" src="http://www.vidyouth.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/DSC04397-300x225.jpg" alt="Mr. Veeraraju - HOD Dept. of Mechanical Engineering.
The labs in the college are all set for what is required as per the current syllabus and every semester more and more buildings come up with better lab facilities for the students; as Ketan adds that they never faced any problems with the infrastructure especially with water overflowing and being wasted in the bathrooms they never had any serious problems with any amenities provided by the management.

All and all the course and the college seems to be the perfect place to be in but many disagree and want changes with the rules; the latest to do the rounds is the BAN on T-Shirts; as Prakash suggests “If the college is having any problem with any person’s clothes, they can privately have a meet with that person and warn him” they feel there’s no point intruding into the comfort level of the students.

The surprising figures are yet to be revealed as only 30% of the students said they opted for Mechanical engineering out of their wish and the rest considered it as just another option in the EAMCET exam or were made to join by their parent’s desire, something more like living their dream and pursuing a filed wish once they wanted to.

But unlike them many students shared with us why they joined the Mechanical engineering branch only, few like Niharika who said she was driven by the fascinating machines and how they worked and Sainath who was really very interested in robots and the machinery involved in making them work and so fantastic and interesting that they took mechanical engineering.

<img class="size-medium wp-image-4850" title="CMEC Mech 03" src="http://www.vidyouth.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/DSC04399-300x225.jpg" alt="Mr. Nageshwar Rao Senior Faculty member of Mech.
Though being only a year old in college they have made there mark in college; and as they don’t have any direct seniors, the students from 4th year of Aeronautics treat them as there juniors and encourage them to participate in seminars and workshops together. The recently held Tech Pragna under the banner of MRGI- Malla Reddy Groups of Institutions, held its Mechanical Technical Paper Presentation at CMEC under the guidance of Department of Mechanical Engineering and Aeronautics; it was called as YANTRA and was a hit among the crowd, students from the mechanical branch showed great interests to make this event a great success.

Even during the annual day celebrations of CMEC the Triumph-09 students of Mechanical engineering branch performed a scintillating dance performance with their dance group called as “THE MIGHT MECHS” which became a rage among the college crowd after their entertaining performance.

So if you are interested in developing mean machines such as “The Terminator” or experimenting on the eco friendly machines of tomorrow; your next pit stop
@ CMEC – ME: The place for future Mechanical Engineers to be.

“When I chose mechanical as my branch in the counseling, all my friends were like, ‘Are u crazy? It is so tough and girls cannot manage it, it is hectic’. Now being in the final year, I am happy and appreciate my decision of choosing Mechanical. Infact, I would suggest it as the best branch as it deals with all real life applications and because of the practical knowledge experience”, says a gratified Sindhura, who is a student of GRIET. The mechanical department in GRIET is known for its track record of securing high percentages among all the branches in the preceding years. It embodies 5 Professors, 7 Associate Professors and 10 Assistant Professors headed by Dr K G K Murthy as the HOD, who has lot of industrial experience .

Plastic moulding. Credit: Schon Jianna

The department is also known for its stringent rules and provoking staff behavior among the students. “We are restricted from participating in other co-curricular activities, which are held during the class hours. For every small thing, we need to take the permission of the department so that we are not marked absent for the day. The bizarreness of the department is that we get attendance for the day only when we attend all the classes, one class you bunk… the whole day you are marked absent!” says vexatious Ravi (name changed).

As Ravi points out the rules of the department, Shreya (name changed) recollects an incident that she faced, when she was in the first year. She says, “I remember when Rythms (inter departmental cultural event) was being held, we weren’t allowed to participate and our HOD started berating us that we just knew to dance and not to study and our names would come out in the notice among the students with back logs! We participated and even scored above 75% that year, which was a slap on their faces!” She also says, “Few faculty members are just ‘slide show anchors’, who read their slides and change them before we could ask a doubt”.

Milling Machine. Credit: Schon Jianna

“Apart from the rude behavior of the staff, there are lecturers, who know the subject very well. The lectures delivered by few of them are very inspiring and create interest among the students and they also encourage us to think innovative. For citation we have professors like Mr. Swadesh Singh, Mr.Nookaraju and Mr Kurma Rao, who are very good with the subject and very considerate.” Says Divya, who is quite happy with the department. She also says, “We have the best lab facilities in the city. We are equipped with new technology machines, which help us acquire practical knowledge and the lab assistants are also very co-operative. The best part of our course is that we have different kinds of labs and we practically do almost everything what we read about in books from holding a welding torch, measuring flow rates, operating on lathes to making cute plastic bottles and caps.

Lathe Machines. Credit: Schon Jianna

The plus point about our branch is that the time table is set that we have lab sessions almost everyday so it provides us with huge relief. The faculty is not very upfront but once the students come forward they are very resourceful. They help us when we want to go out for making paper presentations. Some of the teachers from our department even actively participate in our cultural fest PULSE”.

“Ours is the strictest department among all others in our college. The department even calls up home if we do not come to the college. This is heights man! We aren’t children, we are matured enough and we know what to do. The best incident that gives an overview of the department is the freshers party we gave to our juniors. We all attended it and for the so called absconding the class as the department calls it, we were forced to pay Rs.400/- per head as a fine else we wouldn’t be allowed to write the semester examinations!” says Shiva (name changed) frustrated with the department.

Heat Transfer Lab. Credit: Schon Jianna

“Our department is a stricter to dress code. Only formal clothes are allowed and that means a big NO to even those spunky sports shoes. Every time we are caught wearing non formals, we are made to answer a set of questions posed by the lecturers. This is something which every student of mechanical engineering faces at least a thousand times before he/she finishes the 4 year course. When rules become stricter students just become smarter! It is not uncommon to find guys wearing aprons on T-shirts and walking off right in front of the staff room”. Says Raju (name changed), who is famous for going against the rules.

To sum it up as the saying goes “Kuch paane ke liye kuch khona padtha hai”, by the end of 4 years, a mechanical engineer is one, who with little effort can get into any software, hardware, and core companies and studying in GRIET he/she have to uphold all the rules. Academics wise it makes a graduate but not an over all personality.

Is the new generation passionate about Bikes, Formula1 Cars, Gadgets, Engines, Gears, Fighter Jets? From where do people get the ‘cool home’ in the ‘sizzling hot summers’? How the air conditioners function? Does the youth notice how stuff works? Stuff without which one can’t think of surviving!? Welcome to Mechanical Engineering.

When the counseling starts, all the Intermediate pass outs, with their EAMCET rank cards, scratch their heads for deciding on what branch they have to choose. What we generally hear is, “If you are a good rank holder take up computer science, or IT. Your future will be safe and comfortable” or something like, “If you are a girl, don’t even think of mechanical and civil, it will keep your nose to the grindstone!” These are the general perceptions of people, who give their unwelcome suggestions and influence the student, who is actually going to choose his / her stream of study when they are absolutely confused and don’t know what to choose.

Students engaged in the workshop technology lab. Credits: Aura Unleashed

Once students make up their mind on one of the most interesting and authentic branches of engineering – the ‘Mechanical’, the next step is to choose the college. This step is one of the most important things of the next four years of a student’s life. Here is a little secret for people, looking for a college with faculty with good experience, equipped labs, many workshops, industrial trips and fun blended academics – JBIET’s Mechanical Engineering class room could be the launch pad for all such interested students.

The college has this branch since the year of functioning-1998. It happens to have very experienced teaching staff. The present head of the department is Dr.M V Lakshmi Prakash. He, unlike the stereotypical HODs , is a very gregarious person. He is into teaching for more than 40 years till date. He also has many international and national publications in his citation. The Mechanical department has 24 highly qualified and experienced faculty. It has accoutered labs and workshops. Also a departmental library with 247 volumes and few special journals. The Mechanical Engineering dept of JBIET boasts of a state of the art CAD/CAM lab, which have CNC trainer lathe, 27 computers with the software installed.

The college proudly speaks of Sri. P. Diwakara Reddy as the receipt of the best teacher award for four times consecutively. “When Diwakar sir teaches, the students have no other choice but to grasp it”, says Malathi. Any student studying in the college would recognize him . “Diwakar sir taught us classical mechanics and it seems to be engraved on the walls of my brain”, says an enthusiastic Mechanical Engineering student, Chaitanya.

Every college would have a branch that it is famous for. So for this college, it is Mech. It holds brilliant records of results of the students of Mechnical Engg right from the ‘98 batch. It is clichéd that scoring in core branches like Civil, Mechanical etc is a herculean task. Here the students changed the trends. They scored up to an aggregate of 86 % in Mech and managed to be the top scorer amongst all the branches in the college, since then it has kept up the grandeur.

The labs that prevail in the college, which go hand in hand with the subjects are:

The display of gears in the lab. Credits:Aura Unleashed

1. CAD / CAM

2. Hydraulic Machines Lab

3. Heat Transfer / Fuels lab

4. Metallurgy Lab

5. Thermal Engineering

6. Workshop and Production

7. Mechanics Of Solids Lab

8. Simulation Job

9. Production Drawing practice and Instrumentation Lab

10. Surveying Lab

People have a conventional image that girls don’t fit into Mechanical stream and guys are disappointed that there are very few girls, who take up this branch. “But there are more girls in a Mech class than they are in an IT class in our batch! That’s surprising but true”, says Sowmya, a 3rd year student. “The labs , the hard core welding and stuff has never been a problem for us because we have our class guys always ready to help us and even the lab in-charges”, says Prianka.

The 4 stroke petrol engine;in the thermal lab. Credits: Aura Unleashed

Its well known among all engineering students that the ‘impression’ that one carries matters a lot. Same way the tradition continues in this college too. “If the lab attendants and the lecturers have a good impression on the students, there is absolutely no need to worry about the welding and production labs because they are very supportive”, says Ravi. But on the other hand, “If anyone tries to over act or disobey the lab assistants, no one would be worse than them, chukkalu chupistaaru“, says Krishna, regarding the labs. A student, Ajay (name changed) says, “I’m bloody pestered every moment in the labs because I misbehaved with the faculty… we better be nice to them or else shit will happen”. “The sirs always seem to have a soft corner for the girls working in the labs and during exams it rather looks like the examiner does the job and not the girl!” cribs Abhinay. A very zealous mechanical student Naveen says, “The subjects are awesome in this field. We get to study about the engines, the 2-stroke and the 4-strokes that are used in the bikes and cars. It’s so much fun to actually see them and know how it functions”.

But every rose has a thorn! “One very irritating and disgusting subject in Mechanical Engg is drawing. It will suck the last drop of blood if anyone happens to flunk in that subject”, whines, Anudeep . “This subject is designed to break the spinal cords… My God! Its awful”, says Sahil (name changed), who has been trying to clear machine drawing since 3 years of his study. Contrary to his point of view, Bhargavi says, “Drawing is the most scoring subject and one of my favorites. I scored 100 percent in that subject and at least for that reason I love drawing”, she chuckles. When the students were asked about the extra curricular activities of this department, they seem very ebullient about the SAE (Society of Automobile Engineers) that was inaugurated in the college few months back. “This covers many programs for the Mechies . “It gives us an option to design our own cars and represent them in the BAJA competition”, says Praveen. Here is VidYouth’s brief on this year’s SAE Mini Baja.

When few existing students of Mech Engg were inquired about what they think of their branch, they say. “Mech rox! bigtime!” “Liners like ‘Rebellious Trendsetters’, ‘Mighty Mechanicals’ fit us perfectly”, says Raghu.

Amer, a 2nd year student feels that Mech is the best option as it involves both academic and industrial work. “Its not like the other branches which indulge mostly in programming, which will ultimately lead to pot bellies by sitting in front of the computer all day, we go into the field, work, understand and make a difference”, he says. As it was once quoted, the other branches of engineering are the x and y axes, Mech is the origin’ is absolutely true. If one is a determinant aspirant, aim high, love machines and willing to slog a little for a wonderful product, here it is, JBIET Mechanical!

applications. This surely will make a show.

The SAE Mini Baja was conducted for the first time in 1976 in university of southern California. Its history has been glorious since then, breaking all the boundaries. This is a national level competition, which is to continue for three days, from 29 to 31st January 2009 at NATRAX, NATRIP, Peethampur, Indore. This three days spectacle drew the attention of various engineers from various parts of the country, three being from AP; includes various static and dynamic events, the main event being the Racing event, and each category has distinct points allotted.Baja SAE is an intercollegiate engineering design competition for undergraduate and graduate engineering students. The object of the competition is to simulate real-world engineering design projects and their related challenges. Each team is competing to have its design accepted for manufacture by a fictitious firm.

The students must function as a team to design, build, test, promote and compete with a vehicle within the limits of the rules. They must also generate financial support for their project and manage their educational priorities.” is the objective of the event. The goal of each team is to design and build a prototype of a rugged, single seat, off-road recreational vehicle intended for sale to the non-professional weekend off-road enthusiast. The vehicle must be safe, easily
