Located at the outskirts of the city near Kompally, Malla Reddy College is quite popular for its peaceful surroundings. Especially, during the mornings, students of the college say that the soothing view of the abundant trees and the chilly breeze makes them feel enthusiastic and this is the driving force behind them going to college everyday. As the saying goes, ‘All work and no play, makes Jack a dull boy’, one has to also consider the fact that, though studies lay a foundation to one’s future, having fun also is very essential in a student’s life. And when the college you belong to is Malla Reddy, the first thing that comes into mind is the amazing canteen located just a few steps away from the entrance of the college.

The canteens are not only the perfect hide-out for the students but also a place where one can find delicious food items like the famous ‘veg-manchuria’, ‘paneer puff’, ‘chicken burger’ and so on. The new ‘Coffee shop’ has also been a cool place to hang out with friends, provided the lecturers don’t spot you around especially when they come for a coffee themselves. The ‘college lawn’ has been an all time favourite place for students to chill out after the regular lectures.

And for all those, who like to play it safe, the college buses have proved to be the perfect spot, where nobody would even bother to check. Aarti Agarwal, a student from the college, says, “Bunking has always been on my schedule ever since I was a junior and when you are in a group, the place doesn’t matter at all, we have fun anyways.”

College Buses, Credits : Lethal Charmer

Basket Ball Court, Credits : Lethal Charmer

College Canteen, Credits : Lethal Charmer

On a Weekday like Saturday, Students of the Engineering branch are found standing in large numbers at the main entrance of the college inorder to get into an auto and catch the latest movies at ‘Cine Planet’ which happens to be the nearest multiplex to the college. Whereas the students from the other branches like Pharmacy, MBA and biotechnology tend to bunk in lesser numbers. It is a known fact that boys seem to enjoy each and every moment of their life, unlike girls who seem to concentrate more on studies. This comparison is apt for the students belonging to MRCP where the guys are rarely found on Mondays and Saturdays. In a recent survey conducted in the branch of pharmacy, girls have scored the highest percentage of attendance like 93 % , whereas the highest attendance for boys is 79%. Aadhya Reddy, a student from the college says, “Sometimes it gets really frustrating to attend college regularly especially on Thursdays and Fridays when there is no labs and only theory classes. That’s when we decide to bunk college and take a walk in the nearby woods or chill out at the canteen, If the bunk is Pre-planned then, it obviously has to be watching a new movie. So this means that we skip almost 5 to 6 days of college in a month keeping in mind the strict rules of our college and the fact that attendance is a very important aspect as we cannot write an exam without appropriate attendance.”

In contrast to this, Kavya Rao, a student from one of the engineering branch says, “My attendance is something one would not want to know about because i hardly attend college for that matter. We usually bunk in a group of both guys and girls so when we are absent, the class is all empty. It is only during the labs that we are required to attend college and the latest trend goes like…’If an Engineering student has no back log, He/She is not cool’. But well, everyone has their own ‘Fundas’ in life and mine is something like what I just said.”

College Coffee Shop, Credits : Lethal Charmer

Apart from this, there are students who love to have extra fun, and ‘Runway 9’ is one such place where one can have a blast with friends. ‘Go-karting’, ‘Skating’, and ‘Bungee-jumping’ are some of the things available and it also happens to be a nice venue for hosting birthday parties too. The inumerable ‘Dhabas’ located on main road including the most famous ‘Zee-Dhaba’ find regular customers from the college. Mouth-watering food, spectacular surroundings, friends… What else can one ask for? A few kilometeres away from Kompally, one can also visit the neighbouring gardens and the famous ‘Dola-ri-Dhani’, where time seems to literally fly, unlike in a class room during a leacture.

When it comes to bunking, students of Malla Reddy College never run out of ideas. Tina D’souza, another student of the college says, “Watching a movie or going to a dhaba turns out to be really boring at times and that’s when we take a walk in the woods and have our ‘mini-adventure’, which turns out to be really fun. After we attain our degree, all we take with us are these few beautiful moments that we share with friends and not the regular lectures.”

Bunking the college doesn’t only mean having fun with friends, one can also spend time with their seniors in order to break the ice between the juniors and seniors. All the latest gossips, trends and everything else that makes a student’s life interesting play an important role in boosting up one’s confidence level and eventually helps in developing a positive attitude towards college life.

Fly High, Soar the Sky. Ripping the heart of an aircraft or much better peeling off its skin sounds too eeky, but some of the students in town prefer to do just this and spend their holidays and you know what they call it , their mini project. Place of action: Flytech aviation academy at Nadergul, where students of C.M.Engineering College, pursuing their B.Tech in Aerospace Engineering are doing their mini project. A group of 6 students: Arvind, Ashok, Abhishek. Ganesh, Gaurav and Sohail, all from the same class have finished up learning the basics of Practical knowledge concerning the aircrafts which includes avionics, engines, propulsions, airframes, radar, instruments and many such intriguing fields of further study.

One of the team members, Abhishek informed us, “Rather than a team its individuals out here learn the topics of our interests, so that we could carry out solo projects on a wide variety of topics.” Emboldening as it may sound, these youngsters followed a strenuous schedule of reaching the place at 8 am in the morning even though it required them to wake up much earlier in the morning than a usual college day. Their day starts with a briefing by their Project guide, Mr. Aasthana who happens to be the Professor of Aero Propulsions. Apparently, he is an experienced senior faculty member who, along with the practical knowledge he acquired while serving the Indian Air Force, was a real help to the students in understanding the concepts substantially. Mr. Aasthana is all praise about his team of young engineers and he just cannot seem to stop talking about the amount of discipline and focus of attention that had been instilled in his students.

Project Guide Mr. A C Aasthana. Credit: Dynamic Warrior

Gaurav, another team mate tells us “If only JNTU would have included all these practical aspects to aeronautics in the course, we would have been more prepared to meet the requirements of the outside world when we pass our course”. It really stands true because students doing Diploma in Aircraft Maintenance are actually preferred in the real industry rather than the B Tech graduates who end up searching for jobs in other sectors of automobiles or even the IT sector. When asked more about their project, we were told that they we trying to obtain as much information as possible on the aircrafts, its structure and functioning as they had only a weeks permission and they wouldn’t want to miss out on any stuff. These lucky lads got to witness the functioning of a 14 cylinder aircraft piston engine of a pre World War II model DC 10 aircraft used even by the Royal Air Force.

What fascinated the most to Arvind, who had been a member of the National Cadet Corps was – Air Wings during his school days, were the aero models today. Ganesh also seemed intrigued by the display models which depicted the functioning of aircraft control systems and how the lift is actually produced by the wings of aircrafts eventually making them fly. In a shared view, all of them said that, together that they had eventually learnt more than what they actually get to in a year of the regular classes they attend in their colleges. Other faculty member like Mr. Srinivas, taught the students about the air frame and skin structures of an aircraft thereby describing the term Aerodynamics.

The World War II DC-10 bomber transport aircraft. Credit: Dynamic Warrior

After two hours of theory classes every day, the students had a break of half an hour to binge on food, cause after the break they hit the practical classes in the afternoon and every single day was a new experience for them, on the first day they learnt about propellers and piston firing engines, next day they learned about the instrument panel of the Civil 8 seater twin engine turbo jet plane, and the days to follow got more interesting ahead. They were more than thankful to their Lecturer from College who actually set up the whole project for them, Mrs. Malati; when see told them that the last two days of there educational endeavor would let them learn about helicopters and also let them witness the solo flights of a Cessna 172 trainer aircraft at the Nadergul air field. So it was all more exciting and more to learn the next day when the group went to Sigma Institute to witness two helicopters one of which of Chetak an old Indian Air Force chopper, and they were told about the Auto Gyro effect and other concepts concerning to the helicopter flight and performance.

Then came the last day and the group looked gloomy, as they told us they felt they had so much more to learn and were feeling bad they couldn’t spend more time at the place. Few of the students already decided on what their project topics were to be, as we spoke to Ganesh he told us he would be doing a project soon in the months to come ahead on Enhancing system performance of Cessna Series of trainer aircrafts, whereas Gaurav was more keen on carrying out Case Study on the Indian Aviation Scenario, and Ashok and Abhishek had decided to make mock up of the prestigious DC-10 piston firing system. All said and done the group didn’t stop at this, they wanted to share what they had learnt and thus went on to carry out seminars regarding the same at their college for the others who missed out on this glorious opportunity and also to their juniors who were to learn similar concepts sans the practical part very soon, thus ensuring them a better chance to understand what was taught in class.

The entrance to the runway at the site. Credit: Gaurav

The group says that they would be carrying out more such learning trips and utilizing their holidays to increase their knowledge bank and get prepared for the world outside college.

The 26th of March, 2009, marked another day in the history of Malla Reddy Engineering College, the mother college of Malla Reddy Group of Institutions (MRGI) as the institute celebrated its 7th college day function, ‘Resonanzz – ‘09′. Despite being the last in the row of college day celebrations of the constituent colleges, the main campus jubilations proved next to none (sans the audience that seemed to have reduced a bit in number as compared to the previous year!!). Dr. Viswanath, Director of Evaluation, JNTU, Hyderabad was the chief guest while Dr.Y.V. Rami Reddy, ex-Vice Chancellor, JNTU, Hyderabad presided over the function as the guest of honour. Adding to the panel of dignitaries on stage was the presence of Mr. Kodanda Rami Reddy who is a renowned director from the telugu film industry.

All the dignitaries spoke mainly about personality development as the key to the kickstart to any career, and raised accolades to Mr. Ch. Malla Reddy’s efforts in the upbringing of such an integral group of institutions. What was most commendable of Dr. Rami Reddy’s speech was his way of reminding the students as well as the teachers their rightful duties. He said, “Success lies no where else but in your own hands, and instead of complaining what your lecturers or the institute has done for you, you should instead work hard on your own until you achieve your goal”. And for the lecturers he commented,” A true teacher is the one who can engage a class and build the students’ attention in class without ever carrying a textbook or any sort of notes to the class”.

The Chairman, Mr.Ch.Malla Reddy. Credit: Mystical Tara

While speaking on how he got to such a status in life, the Chairman of MRGI, Mr. Ch. Malla Reddy narrated how he turned to the world of education from selling milk, and proudly announced how he is backed up with tens of thousands of students, and hundreds of staff acting as his strength!! And this, he mentioned, to be the foremost reason for the colleges of MRGI being the most sought after ones…or in his words ‘the colleges having a craze among aspiring students’!! One more time he reminded all his students to leave apart laziness and work towards achieveing their goals with great zeal and enthusiasm as well persuading them to make the best use of all the resources being provided.
As always, the few moments that the king of the empire appeared at the podium were moments of hullabaloo in the audience!!

Following the interim session of speeches, the program finally begun with the traditional prize-distribution ceremony (which unfortunately could not go about the intended manner as the guests awarding the prizes were kept waiting while the prize-winners never knew their name was being announced…..hmmm!!). But all is well that ends well, and towards the end Mr. Ram Reddy, Chief Administrative Officer, MRGI, took over the mike just to set things right, in time!! Further, to settle the hustle-bustle among the audience (or rather to increase a pint of it..), he announced the arrival of two more special guests (’special attraction’ in the function, as you may call it!!), Mr. Mohitesham Ali Khan, World Body Building Champion, and Tarun, renowned Tollywood actor.Following a short uproar in the audience, the special guests were finally called upon stage to present the awards to the winners in sports. Shortly thereafter, Mr. Ram Reddy announced the inclusion of Mr. Mohitesham Ali Khan in the governing body of the ‘Sports Village’ being assumed to be constructed soon by the MRGI.

Resonanzz-09. Credit: Mystical Tara

Moving on to the most awaited part of the event, the cultural programs, which begun with a traditional ‘Ganesh Vandana’ performed in a semi-classical manner, followed by the traditional prayer dance done in classical manner. The program advanced, thus, with dance performances of various genres one after the other and there was some gap in between with a short but moving rock-on…(oops), that is, rock band performance. An acute lack of skits and dramatic performances was observed though, which was presmed to be due to the proposed (deliberate) inclusion of some more dance performances including that of Shiamak Davar’s troupes (wonder why they were performing at a college day function!!!). A short documentary on the day-to-day life in Malla Reddy Engineering College campus shot by one of the 1st year ECE students was another special feature though, which was shown to the audience during an interim break in the proceeding of the event.

Dinner, fireworks, and a galore of music, all added to the splendid show while the restless audience already instigated their disco even before the DJ actually began playing!! However, what in the event would be mostly talked of were the dinner and the decoration (which also included the ‘pukka’ stage built a few days ahead of the event!!). And so, all that ends well…..is, somehow, well…!!!

Malla Reddy Group of Institutions (MRGI) hosted the annual technical fest on the 13th and 14th of March, 2009. The tech fest conducted every year individually in the various colleges of the group of institutions was conducted this year on a whole new magnificent scale at a far greater level than expected by many!!

Previously known as ‘AKSHARA’, the tech fest of the mother college of MRGI, the fest was newly christened as ‘TECH-PRAGNA’…and not only the name but the conduct as well as the program saw a great number of modifications too. The fest, unlike usual, didn’t just include the technical paper presentation contest, but this time various departments as well held a number of novel contests and quizzes like the poster presentation contest, project work exhibition and contest, technical quizzes, etc…

What was awe-inspiring was the inclusion of LAN gaming this year…and one more time MRGI proved itself to be next to none!! A team of ‘golive’ volunteers very well drew participants to have a taste of the most wanted in their very own college.

Inaugural function. Credit: Mystical Tara

If you just thought that was all…then you sure got to get ready to take in more surprises with the ‘FUN GAMES’ stalls put up near the college canteen and the MRPGC block, drawing crowds of students who wold stand there asking for more!! There was the dart-game, light-your-candles, photo-hunt and lots more…and for all those who would have wanted a flashy make-over after a rally weary technical presentation, the ‘Javed Habib hair make-over’ stall was the final pitstop.

But what one looks forward to in a technical fest apart from the technical contests and quizzes is the plethora of technical addresses that enlighten the aspiring graduate about the latest statistics in the global technology sector, R&D and ways and means to make it big in the global market!!! And if you were at TECHPRAGNA-09, you would’t ask for anything more as apart from the guest lectures organised by the individual departments, the rousing ‘techno-filled’ addresses of the honourable guests were as well highly commendable.

<img class="size-medium wp-image-974" title="Techpragna2" src="http://vidyouth.org/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/Techpragna21-225x300.jpg" alt="The Chairman, Mr. Ch.
The inaugral of TECHPRAGNA-09 on the 13th of March, 2009 started off with the traditional lamp-lighting ceremony followed by a prayer song by the students of MBA department. The inaugral function was presided over by Dr. M.D.Christopher, the Secretary of APSCHE as the guest of honour, while Dr.Tulsiram Das, Director of Academic Planning, JNTU had been invited as the chief guest.

At the onset, Prof. Komaraih, Principal, MRCET who was also the Chief Coordinator for the event, spoke about the chairman, Mr. Ch Malla Reddy’s vision of all the colleges of MRGI participating together in the tech fest as a whole, and how the vision had finally led to this remarkable day owing to the unending and reliable cooperation and support extended by each and everyone in the institution. Dr. Madan Mohan, Director of Academics, MRGI was only glad enough to agree to what Prof. Komaraih had said and he concluded wishing the group many more such successful events.Further, Dr. Tulsiram Das enlightened the audience on global industrial requirements. He notified that 35% of the intellectual manpower in India comprises the youth, and hence it is essential for them to be equipped with certain skills that are not included in the regular curriculum like ‘attitude development’, various soft skills and organisational skills. Towards the end of his speech, he aquainted the student audience with the ‘3 Cs’ in life which are ‘Competence’, ‘Confidence’, and ‘Committment’.

Dr. M. D. Christopher expressed his delight on hearing about the Medical College being initiated, and congratulated the management for organising such a grand event with such appreciable prize money, as well wishing them a bright future!! He spared a lot of good advice for the aspiring students present in the audience. Dr. M. D. Christopher adviced the students on opting for higher studies alongwith developing a positive attitude. He emphasised on the significance of communication skills and logical thinking. Highlighting certain statistics about the industrial requirements of intellectual manpower he estimated that about 2.5 lakh students are directly employed most of whom belong to A.P. Also that only 25% of all engineering graduates are employable, out of which only 7% are from A.P., so the direction of development should be in terms of quality and not quantity!! Recalling what Bill Gates had said sometime ago, he said “If US is the leader of software products, India is the leader of its services”. Further too he persistenly emphasised on the need to learn English language in various accents, opt for industrial training as about 40% jobs are given to freshers and hence, overal personality development is very important.

He as well accentuated the need for an optimistic approach for survival with a quote,”An optimist sees an opportunity in every calamity while a pessimist sees a calamity in every opportunity”. At the outset, Dr. M. D. Christopher assured the students that the present recession is only temporary and that they should never limit their aspirations and aim for the top!!

Following the highly erudite speech by the Guest of Honour, the Chairman of MRGI, Mr. Ch. Malla Reddy addressed an unstoppable audience (unstoppable at applauding to his arrival at the podium!!). And in his own words, as ever, Mr. Malla Reddy made a statement when he said that everybody carries their success and luck in their very own hands, and so it is up to them as to what they want to make out of it. And here, as a special case he mentioned,” I am giving you the platform, the resources and the opportunity, make the most of it!!!”. Hence, as a parting note, he adviced the students to quit laziness and work hard towards achieveing success.

Participants and volunteers. Credit: Mystical Tara

As ‘everything that ends well is well’, everything that has had a great beginnig must as well have a great end, and so did TECHPRAGNA-09 too have one. The valedictory function was presided by Dr. Shankar. S. Manthaa, Vice Chairman, AICTE, New Delhi. The Chief Director of Administration, MRGI, Mr. Ram Reddy, summarised the details of the event, highlighting especially the number of papers registered under each department. The Computer Science, and Electronics & Communication Engineering Depts got around 45 papers each, the Biotechnology Dept registered some 39 papers, while there were more than 80 posters pertaining to Pharmacy. In all, nearly 500-800 students had registered for the event. Following the prize distribution where the first was prized at Rs.5000, the second at Rs.3000, and the third at Rs. 2000, the college rock band performance called for a more or less apt conclusion of the event!!!
And so, one would not hesitate in calling it a ‘MEGA’ event for sure!!!

The two days fest started of with much elaboration at the main campus of MREC with all the management honchos present including Shri Malla Reddy – Chairman of MRGI, Retd Col G Ram Reddy – Chief Administrative Officer, Prof R Madan Mohan – Director Academics, Dr. MRK Murthy – Principal MREC, Prof M Komaraiah – Chief coordinator and Prof N Y S Murthy – Convener, whew that was just few of them wondering why?

How? Etc the reason being simple , TECHPRAGNA ‘09 hosted thirteen fests under its name each one being looked by a single college and to name a few Aerodyne the fest for Aeronautical Engineers was hosted by MRCET which included technical quiz, problem statement and other events apart from the regular paper presentation. Other fests included Abhivyakti – ENGLISH, Anusandhan – ECE, AOUSHADH- Pharmacy, Jeevan- Bio Tech, Yavanika – CSE & IT, Vidyout- EEE, Teramind- MCA, Innovator- MBA, so on and on and on.

Faculty Member Mr. Nageswar Rao and judge Dr L Bhaskar. Credit: Dynamic Warrior

The event started with Dr. M D Christopher, Secretary State Council of higher education as the chief guest of the function, the whole formal speeches and guest lectures was followed by registration process which was a herculean task in itself as registration of all the 13 fests was being done at the main campus, lunch which started at 12:30 finished around 1:30pm after which all the participants where requested to proceed to there respective colleges for there fest, they boarded the buses provided for them to commute between the campuses which really helped save time and facilitated running the events on time.

Back at CMEC the stage was set to roll in the action for “YANTRA” as the organizing committee of students prepared itself for the event from two days prior, the moment Judges for the Day Dr. L Bhaskar and Prof C H Rajesh stepped in the seminar hall with Principal Dr. Talla Siva Prasad, Administrative Officer Retd Col Sita Rama Rao, Head of Department Aeronautical Engineering Mr. T Prasad, and the host Head of Department of Mechanical Engineering Prof Veeraraju , noises erupted the peaceful surroundings. The show blared of around 2:00pm half an hour late from the stipulated time, as always the lightning of the lamp by the dignitaries was followed by as prayer song by Srividya from Aeronautical 2nd year and her group, the show was hosted by Gaurav Kaushal from Aeronautical 3rd year.

The first paper to be presented was by T Sushma and E Chandana from Rajiv Gandhi Memorial College of engineering and technology, Nandyal, there topic was “Technology Trends in Mechanical Engineering –NEMS” it was seen that out station students were given first chance to present the paper on the first day as the event was planned for two days, these small gestures by the organizing staff seem to have gone well with the participants who were quite happy with the arrangements made for them, which included stay in hostels, provision of food and snacks and all, the presentations were going well but the time limit set as 15 min was not seemingly enough for the participating students as most of them still didn’t finish their presentation even after the final bell of conclusion was rung, this seem to have gone till the end.

The judge Prof C H Rajesh in center with faculty members. Credit: Dynamic Warrior

The favorite time for everyone was apparently the question and answer session which the audience seem to have enjoyed a lot and rather than a question answer session it seemed more like a debate as the students indulged in constant discussion over any topic and didn’t miss any chance to pull each other’s leg. The first session of the presentations ended at 5:00pm on 13th evening and was presented by Satya Prakash and Imran Ali of DVR engineering college and CMEC respectively with there paper title as “IC Engines”, the say ended with a total of 8 papers being completed and announcement were made regarding 14th schedules.

Session two started of early at 9:30am with judges now being seated in two different Seminar Rooms for all the papers to finish in time, in seminar room 1 B.Goverdhan Reddy from SVIST College of Engineering, Madanpalli started the presentations with his topic of choice “Pelamis”, which in particular raised the curiosity level of the judge and the fellow students. Whereas in seminar room 2 the atmosphere was calmer as it witnessed comparatively lesser participants than room 1 it was managed by Student Coordinators Ashok Jhajhria and Ganesh Chowdary & was anchored by Hemashri of Aeronautical 1st year.

Around 10:30am the Guest lecturer Dr. P Ravinder Reddy Prof. & HOD in Mechanical Engineering Department of Chaitanya Bharati Institute of Technology, presented his slides on aspects of design and production in mechanical engineering, which gave the participants a breather to relax and run there thought process to prepare for there seminars, the presentation by the chief guest concluded with a ceremony honoring the Guest and the judges by a memento given to them by Principal Dr T S Prasad.

The judge Prof C H Rajesh in center with faculty members. Credit: Dynamic Warrior

This brief formal ceremony was quickly followed by the presentations as time was running out the seminars grew more and more repetitive and even the judge seemed jaded as there were no questions being put up by him to the participants which surely was a relief for many. As the clock neared 12:30 the presentations came to an end with K Mohan and Ch Krishna from MREC concluded the last presentation with there topic as “Experimental investigation of cotton seed oil and lin seed oil”

The closure of the events at CMEC for YANTRA came to an end after the vote of thanks, though the announcement of results was yet to be done, the lunch which was again at the main block MREC campus was supposedly followed by the Valedictory function where the guest was Mr. Shankar S Mantha the Vie Chairman of A.I.C.T.E. The response of the participants and the wonderful show put by the organizers promises for a much more magnanimous and impressive event in the coming year. This year being the first one to a hold a massive total of 13 fests really makes a niche for itself for being the real Jumbo of all technical fests in city, though little cultural and informal events could have managed to add the missing glamour to the show, but it was undeniably a delight for everyone to be a part of TECHPRAGNA – ‘09.

U.M.Swamy Best Paper Award’ were also given away in order to encourage young researchers below the age of 35 years. The total number of papers registered at the congress totalled a round figure of 150, out of which 60 papers were presented by renowned Professors and research scholars, though the participation of one and only undergraduate student has been mentioned, as an exceptional case!!

The Congress, as quite rightly mentioned in the objectives of the Mathematical Society, had realised in substantial propotions, the worth of upbringing such a Society. The members and associates of the Society thus work incessantly towards enlightening the Mathematical world as well as those striving to make a difference to it!! “Pure mathematics is, in its way, the poetry of logical ideas.”, quoted Albert Einstein. It is extremely overwhelming to witness, experience and draw highly erudite insights on Mathematical Sciences from such a prestigious assembly of scholars. ‘Math’…that outlawed term in many a student’s dictionary, would have never actually been so explicitly presented and made to seem so worthwhile!!!

The efforts put in by the Principal, Dr. M.R.K.Murthy, the staff members, and the students in organizing the event thus making it a grand success, as well as the hospitality shown by the institution have been appreciated by one and all.

Students of the Department of Electrical Engineering at Malla Reddy Engineering College went on a strike against their Head of the Department, Prof. P.Krishna Sureshwer on Friday, the 30th of January, 2009. The major cause behind the strike stemmed from a fateful incident that took place earlier in that week. Karthik, one of the students pursuing his B.Tech second year from EEE at MREC had lost his father on Wednesday in a fatal road accident. Apparently, the student was being contacted to attend to his father during serious emergency hour while his mobile phone had been confiscated by their HOD, the previous day without prior notice. Although the students do not attribute the fatal accident to be the HOD’s folly, they protested against his confiscation act which took place without notice due to which the student could not attend to his dad in his final minutes.

Apparently, on the previous day while the students were in their laboratory session, HOD had checked their bags , which were placed on a rack outside the lab with out any warning or notice. It was only later in the day that all of the students realized that their mobiles were confiscated. Close peers of the students and all of his classmates seriously condemned against such ruthful acts of the HOD without giving them any prior notice regarding confiscation of mobile phones. “Although mobile phones are officially banned in most of the professional colleges in city, it is a common practice for all of us to use them even within the campus, out of the reach of the management. Had we known that our HOD was seriously against using mobile phones, we would have taken measures to see that we use them only during emergencies. The mobile confiscation took place without any sort of notice and this is what annoyed us the most. It was a major loss to our dear friend who could not reach his dad even in those final moments”, says Lalith one of the close peers to Karthik , who is also a student from the EEE department.

Allegedly, the students protest saying that there were more reasons behind this strike. The HOD had been literally behind the students, treating them like mere school kids rather than students pursuing a professional course of study. “ He has a problem with us sitting in the lawn even during the break time, catching us anywhere in the campus without knowing our purpose of being there, taunting at the minor mistakes that we made, demoralizing us in every sense. He would catch hold of us and scold us even if we were seen in the library. We had enough of this and had to get rid of him someday”, says an annoyed girl student of the same department.

Student gathering in front of EEE block.

The strike went on for two days. On Friday, EEE students had assembled at the lawn in front of their block and started off with shouts of protest until they caught the management’s attention. The same went on for two hours or so when their HOD came to try and calm them down. Also, the whole EEE faculty had poured down to calm their students down but in vain. Finally, the administrative officer had to come to the mob to request them to assemble in the seminar hall to list out their woes against their HOD. The Principal and the Administrative officer had listened to the long list of problems they faced and assured them that required action will be taken at the soonest possible. Knowing the procedures of the college quite well, this assurance had not pacified them. The students had no stopping at this. The next day, a greater crowd had gathered in front of the Dean’s office protesting for the same reasons. The HOD had come to declare that he would henceforth resign from this post. Even this declaration did not quench the aggression of the students who said they would only believe it after they see a signed and approved copy of his resignation letter. When the students realized that things were not working out, they had requested their peers from all the other branches for support in the strike.

Within no time, almost all the students in the college from different branches had assembled in front of the Dean’s office protesting for justice to be done. The situation went out of control with so many students at stake. After a precise but profound discussion that the Dean had with the Principal and the Administrative Officer, Dean had declared to the students gathered in front of his office that he had always stood by the students in problems and even this time would take the necessary action. He assured the students that by the next working day, Head of the EEE department would not be in his post. With staunch belief in the Dean’s words, the students had calmed down and thanked him with broad smiles and cheerful faces. Slowly the mob started to disperse with squeals of triumph and happiness. In every walk of our education system, we find student associations, gatherings and groups to be the most powerful of mobs. If their protest is genuine, they would go any lengths to prove it right and demand justice to be done. In the true sense this is something we refer to as Students’ Power!

Indeed! The brainchild of a visionary educationist, a man with a dream to educate thousands, the man who realised the importance of education in an individual’s life…..Mr. Ch. Malla Reddy, Chairman, Malla Reddy Group of Institutions (MRGI), has realised his vision through Malla Reddy Engineering College (MREC), the first of his established expanse of educational cosmos!!
In his own words,”I had a vision of excellence, a vision of triumph – a vision of destination for many. A vision to educate and enlighten millions, to ignite their latent thoughts, and propel them to explore and learn. A visionary milieu which would cherish all my ideals, be a fountain of knowledge, to serve and enhance the very meaning of existence. I realized, the place, serving to be the epitome of knowledge, temple of learning to nurture personalities, to redefine knowledge frontiers in serving the students fraternity in their professional pursuits or varied interests.”
As the saying goes,‘Geniuses are not born, but are made’, so does the tagline of MREC hold a meaning synonymous with the above.
If it is confident, gutsy, ‘oh yes,of course, I can!’ kind of a collegian you are lookin for …then MREC is sure the pitstop for it!! Would jus carve the ultimate ‘YOU’ out of ‘you’!!!!!
Well, why don’t we jus start off with a general description of what the campus offers to the eyes at the first glance?! If it is a really huge playground, splashed with green around here ‘n’ there, and tall buildings that you’re lookin for……man, then you got yourself to the right place! A writer’s pleasure it is to describe this scenic paradise of erudition! To begin with, there are the patches of jade here ‘n’ there which serve their rightful purpose…..of student hangouts (though parents have also been often spotted!!).
And classrooms & labs, ah, there are plenty of ‘em!! And very much with the best State-of-the-art technology, and avon qualitative & quantitative infrastructure that would never give a chance of complaint. No doubt parents queue-up for their wards way before the course begins (or should i say, even before the entrance examination results are out!).
Coming to the most essential requisite of a college campus, as from the view of a collegian…yeah, you got it…the canteen!! MREC houses two of ‘em, known at large for that aromatic biryaniI (kinda!) one ought to taste (don’t go in with high hopes, but it sure is irresistible).
A note to all those here who thought home is far away…please put your fears away ‘coz MRGI probably has the largest network of transport for its students residing anywhere in the city upto Maisammaguda, and if you don’t belong to the city then you should be belonging to the college hostel!!
If I’ve had enough pleasure of describing the virtual extravaganza of the campus, let me make a note her that the college is affiliated to one of the earliest and renowned universities, the Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU). And now, allow me to move on, with pride, to give you an insight into the events conducted by the institution. And here as well, you are promised a wide range of variety from academics & sports to fun!!
‘AKSHARA‘ – the national level technical paper presentation contest conducted as a part of the curriculum of the ISTE student chapter is like a 2-day fest at the institution which is a time for coming together, guest lectures, loads of knowledge and of course, scoops of fun too!!
Also there has been ‘TRANSCEND‘ in the recent times, an inter-college paper presentation contest organised by the Student Committee of the college (Oh! Did I forget to mention this lot of steamingly enthusiastic collegians who have aided always in adding milestones to the glorious path of the institution)
Now & then the various departments do hold guest lectures apart from the regular academic events mentioned above.
Comin to the sports section, its like…’you name it, you get it’ in MREC. Basketball–check, volleyball–check, cricket–check, carroms–check, table tennis–check, chess–well..umm..check-mate! The institution actually boasts of havin produced some of the best inter-university players in few of the aforementioned sports!
Now, the most awaited, the cultural events which include the quite hyped & most talked of ‘Ethnic Day’, again a brainchild of the Student Committee, usually conducted every year on the 1st of October. And there is this fresher’s day every year to welcome in the new kiddos!! And now, the biggest event of all….a day that every collegian from MREC looks forward to in the 200 or so working days of the institution….’ResonanZZ‘…the college day!!! Celebrated for 5 years now eversince the college was established in the year 2002, it has been an evening of cherishing memories, exciting jubiliation, fun…and jus tons of fun!!
‘United we stand, divided we fall’, the admin and staff at MREC provide a living paradigm for this expression. And as the strength of every elegant edifice lies in its foundation, so it is in the case of MREC too where the pillars of foundation include Mr. Ch. Mahender Reddy, Secretary, MRGI; Mr. G. Ram Reddy, Chief Administration Officer, MRGI; Prof. R. Madan Mohan, Academic Head, MRGI; as well as Dr. M.R.K. Murthy, Principal, MREC.
The pioneering spirit of Mr. Ch. Malla Reddy has indeed brought MREC to where it stands today.
And when they say,”If you have the wings to dream…we scholar the potential to achieve”, they mean it!!

Three cheers to the sui generic institution!!

14th October,2008…one most memorable day in the college life of every III year BT (that stands for ‘Biotechnology’ all ye non-collegians..!!) student from Malla Reddy Engineering College.

Open sesame Credit: Mystical Tara

A long awaited (or precisely, should i say….’kept awaited’) industrial visit had finally become a reality!!! Whoa…what a nice sunny day to visit a vast expanse of lush green fields dotted by concrete labs, a couple (or a lil more) of lakes, with intertwining paths connecting all the spots you would want to, within that place.

NOTE:- If you always pictured an industry as a huge concrete building with a really high chimney piping out the smoke into the air, with large petrifying equipment the head and tail of which you neva understood…..then now you would want to rethink and reconsider!!! ‘Coz ICRISAT is jus’ the kind of a place that could get you wrong.

Oh yeah….finally i did mention the place visited, the ‘International Crops Research Institute for Semi-Arid Tropics’…so that is why it is ICRISAT…short n sweet (and a lot better too!).

That looks like...Yummie! Credit: Mystical Tara

After a jolly good long journey in the not so irkingly hot sun (not to forget the seat-bumping, throat-achin’ fun we had in the bus where everyone discovered an inner Farhan Akhtar, rockin’ eh…?!!) we finally landed at, should i say, a ’scientific paradise’!!

Following a short security check, we were directed to the visitor’s auditorium where the Visitor’s Communication Officer, Mr.Ravi gave us all a better insight into the research prospects, aims and objectives of the institute. And of course, an audio-visual served as an additional source of info.

Presently led by Dr.William.D.Dar, Director General, ICRISAT, the institute was established in the year 1972 and it functions basically towards developing hybrid, resistant, and high-yielding crops for growth in the semi-arid tropics. It has specialised in modifying and developing improved varieties of two kinds of cereals (namely, Sorghum and Pearl millets) and three kinds of legumes (namely, Chick pea, Pigeon pea and Groundnut). The institute’s most notable work in research has been the development of plants resistant to the pest ‘Helicoverpa’, ICRISAT bein the first institute in the world to have produced transgenic Chick pea, Pigeon pea, and Groundnut.

U bet those are groundnuts! Credit: Mystical Tara

And here I need to mention that the samples of transgenics that we saw were pretty mind-boggling as in the sense of their unusual shapes, color, etc. And we were told it was not only the virtual appearance that differed but also a lot on the nutritional content too!!

Coming back to the greatness of the institute, as we were made to witness, ICRISAT is one of the 15 institutions in the whole wide world under the ‘Consultative Group for Institutes in Agricultural Research (CGIAR)’, Washington D.C. The CGIAR has several other institutons in nearly six regions of the sub-Saharan Africa including Niger, Kenya, etc.

The most significant part of the AV shown to us was where the objectives and aims of the research institute were highlighted. The institute holds the following objectives closest to its idea of research:

1.             Agro-ecosystem development;
2.             Crop improvement and management;
3.             Harnessing biotechnology for the poor;
4.             Institutes, Market, Policies;
Soon after, we moved to the ‘Satventure’ section that houses nearly everything, minute yet significant, related to the institute somehow! You could call it an ‘agricultural museum’, a collector’s brainchild where we

Ikebana using millets..:) Credit: Mystical Tara

found jus’ about everything that we heard of from Mr.Ravi…..seeds, seeds, and more seeds, soil samples, equipment used in the laboratory and a few in the field as well, schematic charts, representations, journals on pests and plant biology, etc.

In that ‘etcetera’, there are a couple of things a visitor wouldn’t want to miss out upon. First, the handmade utensils, ladles, and hats displayed as an encouragement to rural handicrafts and also because of their unusual source…..dried vegetables. Yes! I am sure you would have never heard of vessels made out of pumpkin, and ladles made out of bottle gourd!!! Secondly, there was this tribal room part of the museum that depicted every scene from the fieldwork in rural areas (a mini ‘Madame Tussaud’s’…eh!!).

Lunch time! Indeed after such a lengthy AV, and virtual experience on all related to ‘agriculture’ (note:- please read it as ‘food’ here…!!) you wouldn’t resist yourself from goin into an ‘aseptically hygienic’ canteen. A food-lover myself, I bet all of us relished the tasty food without actually burnin any holes in our pockets…yes, but we did pay for ourselves!!

Time for some serious work post-lunch now. Though not supposed to but we were shown around certain labs in the campus (I bet this was the best part of the entire visit!!) thanks to a little pleading and a little influential pressure!

On our last leg, Mr. Ravi briefed us upon the opportunities offered by the institute, in terms of a student or a career prospect. He had been patient enough to take all our queries and resolve our ambiguities.

And one most memorable trip thus ended up walking down the memory lane, as they say (which was actually the road to the main gate!)…..and by this time, we all very well understood how ICRISAT lives up to its motive of ‘Science With A Human Face’……….

On an ending note, there always goes a line or two of appreciation for the people behind the great job which includes Dr.G.Vijayalakshmi, HOD and Ms.Visalakshi, Associate Professor, both from the BT Dept., MREC who made all the efforts to realise the visit!

And ya…..hope to be back there sometime again………soon!!!!!
